The UEFA Cup for me usually doesn't get interesting until the later rounds but we already know the first and second knockout round draws, First knockout round Aberdeen (Scotland) v Bayern Munich (Germany) AEK Athens (Greece) v Getafe (Spain) Bolton Wanderers (England) v Atletico Madrid (Spain) Zenit St Petersburg (Russia) v Villarreal (Spain) Galatasaray (Turkey) v Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) Anderlecht (Belgium) v Girondins Bordeaux (France) Brann Bergen (Norway) v Everton (England) FC Zurich (Switzerland) v Hamburg SV (Germany) Rangers (Scotland) v Panathinaikos (Greece) PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) v Helsingborg (Sweden) Slavia Prague (Czech Republic) v Tottenham Hotspur (England) Rosenborg Trondheim (Norway) v Fiorentina (Italy) Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) v Basel (Switzerland) Werder Bremen (Germany) v Braga (Portugal) Benfica (Portugal) v Nuremberg (Germany) Olympique Marseille (France) v Spartak Moscow (Russia) Second knockout round Anderlecht/Girondins Bordeaux v Aberdeen/Bayern Munich Rangers/Panathinaikos v Werder Bremen/Braga Bolton Wanderers/Atletico Madrid v Sporting Lisbon/Basel Galatasaray/Bayer Leverkusen v FC Zurich/Hamburg SV AEK Athens/Getafe v Benfica/Nuremberg Rosenborg Trondheim/Fiorentina v Brann Bergen/Everton Slavia Prague/Tottenham Hotspur v PSV Eindhoven/Helsingborg Olympique Marseille/Spartak Moscow v Zenit/Villarreal First knockout round, first leg ties to be played Feb 13/14, second legs played Feb 21. Second knockout round, first leg ties to be played March 6, second legs played March 12/13. If the favorites win in the first round there are some potentially good 2nd round matchups like Bordeaux-Bayern Munich, Rangers or Panathinaikos-Werder Bremen, Atletico Madrid-Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen/Galatasaray-Hamburg, Fiorentina-Everton, Tottenham-PSV and Marseille-Villarreal. |

The UEFA Cup is getting a week's head start on the Champions Legaue and of these first round elimination series I think these are the best matchups: AEK Athens (Greece) v Getafe (Spain) Bolton Wanderers (England) v Atletico Madrid (Spain) Zenit St Petersburg (Russia) v Villarreal (Spain) Galatasaray (Turkey) v Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) Anderlecht (Belgium) v Girondins Bordeaux (France) Rangers (Scotland) v Panathinaikos (Greece) Rosenborg Trondheim (Norway) v Fiorentina (Italy) Benfica (Portugal) v Nuremberg (Germany) Olympique Marseille (France) v Spartak Moscow (Russia) I think teams like Getafe and Rosemborg have the opportunity to be surprises in this year's tournament. They won't win it but I wouldn't be surprised to see them win a few series along the way against better known teams. But Bayern Munich have to be the big favorites to lift this Cup. |

Last night's results and today's fixtures: Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 Villarreal Galatasaray 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen AEK Athens 1-1 Getafe Brann Bergen 0-2 Everton Werder Bremen 3-0 Sporting Braga Marseille 3-0 Spartak Moskow PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Helsingborg Anderlecht 2-1 Bordeaux Rangers 0-0 Panathinaikos Sporting Lisbon 2-0 Basel Aberdeen - Bayern Munich Zürich - Hamburg Rosenborg - Fiorentina Slavia Prague - Tottenham Hotspur Bolton Wanderers - Atlético Madrid Benfica - Nürnberg Manzanares, I agree that Bayern should be considered favourites, but other teams such as Werder Bremen, Fiorentina, Everton, Spurs and your own Atletico Madrid must consider that they have a good chance. You must be quite pleased to be playing Bolton, who are having such a bad season and have just lost their star man, Nicolas Anelka. On their day they can still be quite dangerous, as they proved when drawing away to Bayern Munich and beating Manchester United this season. Their skilful playmaker Kevin Nolan can be a threat, but they've only won two of their last eight games and are in the relegation fight in the Premier League. Everton have been a revelation this season and last night played really well in winning 2-0 at new Norwegian champions Brann Bergen, to record a 6th consecutive European victory. They're still a young side and inexperienced at this level, but they could be a threat in the later stages of the competition. Spurs have really come into form lately, the form we had been expecting from their talented and expensively-assembled squad since August! Still, better late than never and Juande Ramos looks to have a shot at a third consecutive UEFA Cup win. It's amazing that such a weak team as Aberdeen have made it this far. Some of the media here have been recounting how Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen eliminated Bayern Munich over two legs in the Cup Winners Cup semi-final en route to beating Real Madrid in the final in 1983, but I suspect that tells us more about Ferguson as a manager than it does about Aberdeen's prospects tonight! |

Thursday's first leg scores: Aberdeen 2 - 2 Bayern Munich Zurich 1 - 3 Hamburger SV Rosenborg 0 - 1 Fiorentina Bolton W. 1 - 0 Atletico Madrid Slavia Prague 1 - 2 Tottenham H. Benfica 1 - 0 Nurnberg Great road results for Hamburg, Fiorentina and Tottenham. Because it is Bayern we probably all expected them to beat Aberdeen but when you think about it a 2-2 road tie, with those 2 away goals is a pretty good result to take back to Bavaria. Atletico were a disaster today at Bolton and were hurt by Kun Aguero, who was given a rest and didn't start but got sent off shortly after coming on as a sub for spitting at an opponent! Ai,ai,ai, Aguero still needs to grow up. Forlan hitting a post was the closest Atletico came to scoring while Diouf got Bolton's goal after Pablo made yet another defensive error. In general I can't be too upset by only losing by a goal on the road but Atletico will need to play much better next week at home.
You're probably right Simon, those other teams you named should also be considered candidates for the title but with the talent they have on hand, Bayern should win this Cup. If they don't it will be an upset. |

I feel Simon is correct, Fiorentina, Everton, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Werder Bremen are all serious candidates to win the UEFA Cup. Bayern Munich will have the pressure to win it all, anything less for them will be considered a failure and with a lame duck coach in charge you wonder whether they can do it. They sure haven't been impressive so far in the UEFA Cup but no team left in the competition on paper looks as good as they. |

I agree with Manzanares and Libero that Bayern are the favourites for the UEFA Cup, I suppose my reservation is that both they and Werder Bremen are frontrunners for the Bundesliga title. In England, the convention is that you prioritise the domestic championship over European competition as that is your basic weekly concern, or your 'bread and butter' as we say it. I'm not sure whether the same is always true across other top championships with regards to the CL, but I'm pretty sure either Bayern or Werder would rather win the Bundesliga shield than the Uefa Cup, given the choice. Of course, there's nothing to stop either of them winning both! I would say that Spurs, Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, Everton, Villarreal are more able and likely to prioritise the UEFA Cup. There is an increasing trend towards European competitions being won by a big fish from a small pond (Porto, CSKA Moscow) or by teams who've finished 4th or 5th in big championships (Liverpool, AC Milan, Sevilla). I was surprised to see that Bolton had won against Atletico Madrid, as they are struggling at the moment. IMO Atletico remain favourites to advance, but their lack of an away goal is something of a concern, as of course it only takes Bolton to score a goal out of the blue in Madrid to give Atletico a mountain to climb. |

I am disgusted by Atletico Madrid's performance today. A 0-0 tie at home against Bolton eliminates Atletico. A very poor game from them as they played without any thought out there and were frustrated by Bolton's packed defense. Another season of promise is going down the tubes. Sigh, such is the fate of we Atleti fans! |

Atletico just couldn't shoot straight against Bolton. Hard to win playing like that. Villarreal also went out on away goals to Zenit St Petersburg. Bayern Munich crushed Aberdeen, Bayer Leverkusen did the same to Galatasaray as did Everton to Brann. Benfica scored two goals in the 90th minute and another in injury time to edge out Nuremberg. The complete list of games, the scores to the left were the first leg results, those to the right for the 2nd leg: 1-0 Zenit S. Peters. (Rusia)-Villarreal (España) 1-2 1-1 AEK Atenas (Grecia)-Getafe (España) 0-3 1-0 Bolton Wand. (Inglaterra)-Atlético (España) 0-0 2-2 Aberdeen (Escocia)-Bayern M. (Alemania) 1-5 0-0 Galatasaray (Turquía)-Leverkusen (Alemania) 1-5 2-1 Anderlecht (Bélgica)-Girondins B. (Francia) 1-1 0-2 Brann Bergen (Noruega)-Everton (Inglaterra) 1-6 1-3 Zurich (Suiza)-Hamburgo (Alemania) 0-0 0-0 G. Rangers (Escocia)-Panathinaikos (Grecia) 1-1 2-0 PSV (Holanda)-Helsingborg IF (Suecia) 2-1 1-2 Slavia Praga (Rep. Checa)-Tottenham (Inglaterra) 1-1 2-0 Sporting L. (Portugal)-Basilea (Suiza) 3-0 0-1 Rosenborg (Noruega)-Fiorentina (Italia) 1-2 3-0 Werder B. (Alemania)-S. Braga (Portugal) 1-0 1-0 Benfica (Portugal)-FC Nuremberg (Alemania) 2-2 3-0 O. Marsella (Francia)-Spartak M. (Rusia) 0-2 |

Yakubu Aiyegbeni lit it up for Everton in their big win over Brann with a hat trick. But it was Andy Johnson's missile which was the goal of the game. The German clubs really rose to the challenge in this UEFA Cup, 4 made it to the last 16 and if Benfica had not staged that late comeback against Nuremberg there would have been 5 remaining. here is the draw for the round of 16: Anderlecht (Belgium) v Bayern Munich (Germany) Rangers (Scotland) v Werder Bremen (Germany) Bolton Wanderers (England) v Sporting (Portugal) Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) v Hamburg SV (Germany) Getafe (Spain) v Benfica (Portugal) Fiorentina (Italy) v Everton (England) Tottenham Hotspur (England) v PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) Olympique Marseille (France) v Zenit St Petersberg (Russia) * First leg ties to be played March 6, second legs to be played March 12 and 13. Some good battles there, the ones which grab my attention are Bayer Leverkusen-Hamburg; Fiorentina-Everton and Tottenham-PSV. |

Bolton's qualification for the last 16 should lift their spirits in the midst of their relegation battle in the Premier League. Many of their supporters will have woken up this morning with sore heads, but unfortunately not necessarily due to drinking a bit too much to celebrate their unlikely win. The Bolton fans were victims of an indiscriminate baton charge by Spanish police and have made an official complaint to UEFA. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7258162.stm Back on the pitch, the draw for the last 16 looks very enticing. All the ties look interesting to me. Most of them look fairly even, but we must once again say that Bayern should be too strong for their opponents. |

There also was a fight between Atletico's ultras which the police were trying to break up and they were trying to get the Bolton fans separate so the intra Atletico problems wouldn't spread their way. But according to my co worker who was at the game the Bolton fans weren't any angels either. He and his friends were forced to leave their seats as Bolton fans were urinating on them and throwing coins and other objects down at them from above! I am happy to see Getafe advance in this tournament, they are developing into a good Cup team, last year Copa del Rey finalists, this year they're in the semifinals of the same competition and now the final 16 in the UEFA. |

Nice. It's just a shame these baton charges are indescriminate. I suppose there'll always be a few muppets in any football crowd, it's just unfortunate that everyone suffers when the police take action like this. I don't think anyone would lose much sleep if it was just the troublemakers who had a richly-deserved close encounter with a police baton! |

Thursday's first leg results in the octave finals: Anderlecht (BEL) - Bayern Múnich (GER) 0 - 5 Marsella (FRA) - Zenit San Petersburgo (RUS) 3 - 1 Fiorentina (ITA) - Everton (ENG) 2 - 0 Bolton (ENG) - Sporting Portugal (POR) 1 - 1 Glasgow Rangers (SCO) - Werder Bremen (GER) 2 - 0 Bayer Leverkusen (GER) - Hamburgo (GER) 1 - 0 Tottenham (ENG) - PSV Eindhoven (NED) 0 - 1 Benfica (POR) - Getafe (ESP) 1 - 2 Bayern Munich showed why everyone is picking them as the favorites as they won big in Brussels. PSV winning at Tottenham by 1-0 and Getafe who beat Benfica 2-1 were the other two clubs to win on the road. Benfica had Oscar Cardozo sent off after 8 minutes and were playing catch up the rest of the way. De la Red and Pablo scored for Getafe but a late Pedro Mantorras goal gives Benfica some hope in the return once they're 11 vs 11. But Getafe are showing why they are still alive in three competitions at this point. |

Getafe are the team of the moment in Spain and they are on a great run. And what is interesting is Laudrup is rotating players so they aren't relying on the same 11 players in league, Cup and UEFA Cup games. This is a big reason why they are able to be successful on so many different competitions. It is hard to dislike this team. |

This is true Dr Z, Getafe are showing you can build up a competitive team with players developed in your youth team and by picking up good players on the cheap. You don't need to spend multi million euros to field a good team and one with depth. Getafe are indeed a club who are admirable. And they also play attractive futbol too. Good win for Fiorentina in their match against Everton and for Marsella against Zenit. 2 goal home wins put you in good position for the return leg. Bayern just destroyed Anderlecht in Belgium. Ribery is the brains behind Bayern's success and now has developed a good free kick shot. He is an amazing talent. |
