OK I took your advice Winslow and will give 3 points for picking the correct quarterfinal winners, 4 for picking the semifinal victors and 6 for picking the correct champion. Although I'm also open to any alternative suggestions for scoring the semifinals and final.

So after the quarterfinals these are the standings in our prediction league:

badgerboy 18 pts.
Merengue 18
raconteur 16
hobbes 16
Yogi 15
shelsoccer 15
gaviota 15
Simon 13
Gunners 13
Don Balon 13
Manzanares 13
cafetero 13
libero 13
Mr. Pither 13

Ok here are the standings now after the semifinal stage in our prediction contest. I think giving a correct pick of the title winners should be worth 8 points and not 6, is that acceptable?

Merengue 26 pts.
hobbes 24
shelsoccer 23
badgerboy 22
Yogi 19
gaviota 19
Simon 17
Manzanares 17
cafetero 17

Fine by me.

I haven't been following this "prediction friendly" but it actually looks like a fascinating position for me.

If Spain win I take the "trophy" - whether I get 6 points or 8 points for their victory as all the players above me plumped for Germany.

If Germany win I slump to either 7th (with 6 pts for their win) or 8th (with 8 pts for their win).

Just another reason for me to cheer for the Spanish tomorrow night!

I'd suggest that, if Germany wins, it's worth eight points for me, six for Hobbes and four for Merengue. Sound reasonable?

Here's the all-tournament team:

GK: Buffon, Casillas, van der Saar
D: Bosingwa, Lahm, Marchena, Pepe, Puyol, Zhirkov
M: Altintop, Modric, Senna, Xavi, Podolski, Zyrryanov, Ballack, Fabregas, Iniesta, Sneijder
F: Arshavin, Pavlyuchenko, Torres, Villa

Would have to question Lahm (good on one side of the ball, horrible on the other). Little surprised at Cesc, given that he didn't really have an impact until the final two games, albeit those were huge games. Seems to me a spot could have been found for Silva.

Xavi was named most outstanding player. Hard to quibble with that, though I have to say I thought Senna might have been the real key to Spain's success. As the only defensive midfielder in Spain's formation, I was constantly amazed at the amount of ground he covered, his tackling, anticipation, ability to link with the attacking players and even get into the attack himself.

If you had to play this tournament without Xavi or Senna, who would you pick? Could Spain still have won without that player?

It was a funny tournament really, it semmed to lack stand-out players who were consistently brilliant all tournament. I think that's kind of reflected here. There are quite a few players who were only good for one or two games, such as Sneijder, Arshavin, Zhiryanov etc. Modric's inclusion is fair enough as I thought he was still brilliant even when Croatia played badly. I'm not sure there should be two Portugal defenders, while Lahm's inclusion is surely for comedy value.

I wouldn't quibble with the Spanish players, though like shelsoccer I'd personally choose Senna over Xavi as their outstanding player. Xavi played well but Senna didn't put a foot wrong at all. I think there's a slight bias against defensive players in these awards. I've previously heard Ballack called 'player of the tournament' and perhaps he would be if Germany had won last night? It seems the player of the tournament must always come from the winning team.

Well Oliver Kahn in 2002 and Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 won the best player award at the last two World Cups as defensive players so maybe that bais against defensive players is lessening. For me it would have been hard to pick between Xavi or Senna for top playe rin Euro 2008. But Spain won not so much due to any one, or two standout players, but because of their overall team effort.

I agree here with enganche, for me it was between Xavi and Senna for top player in the tournament. Marcos Senna probably was the more consistent throughout the entire tournament but Xavi was the orchestrator of Spain's intricate passing game and for that I can see how he was selected as the tournament's top player.

This would be my Best XI for Euro 2008:

GK: Iker Casillas (Spain)
RB: Sergio Ramos (Spain)
CB: Carles Puyol (Spain)
CB: Robert Kovac (Croatia)
LB: Yuri Zhirkov (Russia)
MF: Marcos Senna (Spain)
MF: Xavi (Spain)
RW:Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany)
LW: Arda Turan (Turkey)
FW: David Villa (Spain)
FW: Ruud van Nistelrooy (Holland)

There were some players I wanted to include like Podolski, Arshavin, Sneijder and Tuncay but the players I did name at their positions- Turan, Villa and Xavi were better throughout the tournament I thought.

Here is how our prediction contest ended, congratulations to badgerboy our champion and gaviota the runnerup, the only two who picked Spain to win the title! You two were braver, and smarter than I in having confidence in La Furia Roja.

badgerboy 30 pts.
gaviota 27
Merengue 26
hobbes 24
shelsoccer 23
Yogi 19
Simon 17
Manzanares 17
cafetero 17
libero 17
Mr. Pither 17
raconteur 16

This would be my selection for best XI,

GK: Iker Casillas (Spain)
RB: Sergio Ramos (Spain)
CB: Carles Puyol (Spain)
CB: Pepe (Portugal)
LB: Yuri Zhirkov (Russia)
MF: Marcos Senna (Spain)
MF: Xavi (Spain)
RW:Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany)
LW: Arda Turan (Turkey)
FW: David Villa (Spain)
FW: Andre Arshavin (Russia)

I agree with Manzanares, there were some tough calls to make, for me about Sneijder, van Nistelrooy, Altintop, Srna and Modric but I just didn't feel they were superior in this tournament to the players I selected here. Funny thing was this was a tournament of midfielders, and the two forwards I named, Villa and Arshavin only played 3 1/2 and 3 games respectively. Yet no other forwards in my opinion equaled them.

I'll take a crack at selecting a Best XI. I saw the team UEFA picked and it lost all credibility with me when I saw Phillip Lahm's name there!

GK- Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)
RB- Vedran Corluka (Croatia)
CB- Sergei Ignashevich (Russia)
CB- Giorgio Chiellini (Italy)
LB- Yuri Zhirkov (Russia)
MF- Marcos Senna (Spain)
MF- Hamit Altintop (Turkey)
MF- Xavi (Spain)
MF- Wesley Sneijder (Holland)
FO- David Villa (Spain)
FO- Andrei Arshavin (Russia)

Biggest flops of the tournament- Luca Toni, Mario Gomez and the entire French team!
