Group A: Portugal, Switzerland Group B: Germany, Croatia Group C: Italy, Romania Group D: Spain, Russia Quarters: Portugal over Croatia; Germany over Switzerland; Italy over Russia; Spain over Romania Semis: Germany over Portugal; Spain over Italy Finals: Germany over Spain Notes: I think Switzerland, playing at home, edges a Czech team whose lineup is in transition ... Pretty clear-cut for me in Group B, though Turkey could surprise ... Went with Romania in Group C just to be contrary I'm nervous about Italy and something tells me France is in for a let down. Holland has too many questions in the back and too many off-the-field issues ... Pains me not to pick Sweden in Group D, but I think this is an aging team whose young players haven't yet proven themselves ... I think my quarterfinal picks are pretty safe, assuming Italy doesn't let me down ... The semis are where Italy finally hits a snag ... I think Spain may be a more talented team than Germany, but until Spain actually steps up on the big stage it's tough to pick them. |

Group A: Portugal, Switzerland Group B: Germany, Croatia Group C: Italy, Holland Group D: Spain, Russia Quarterfinal winners: Portugal, Germany, Italy, Spain Semifinal winners: Portugal, Italy Winner: Portugal Excuse me brethren Azzurri fans but without Cannavaro I don't think Italy will take the title. Luca Toni will need to produce goals but the Azurri will do well enough to make the final where portugal will pull the upset. With players like Ronaldo, Simao, Quaresma, Deco, Pepe and Carvalho they have as much talent as anybody. After so many semifinal appearances, they are due for a title. |

Group A: Czech Republic, Portugal Group B: Germany, Croatia Group C: France, Holland Group D: Spain, Greece Quarterfinal winners: Czech Republic, Germany, France, Holland Semifinal winners: Germany, France Winner: France Les Bleus get their revenge on Germany for World Cups 1982 and 1986! It will be very difficult to score on France in this tournament and with Ribery, a surprising Gomis and Henry who despite a poor year still has something in the tank and even more to prove, France will have enough offense to pull out the victories. Holland will be their most difficult opponent but defensively they aren't as strong. |

A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Italy, Holland D: Spain, Russia Quarters: Portugal, Germany, Italy, Holland Semis: Germany, Italy Final: Germany I think Italy will have a successful tournament but their defense will be a little young and I don't know if they'll have enough to get through the entire tournament. Unlike other Azzurri teams, but like the 2006 world champions, offensively thiss team will click. But I see Germany breezing through to the semifinals then defeating Portugal in the semis and Italy in the final. Ballack will be the tournament MVP. |

A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Italy, France D: Spain, Russia 1/4 finals: Croatia, Germany, Italy, France 1/2 finals: Germany, France Final: France The French have the best defense in the tournament now that Cannavaro is out for Italy. Offensively they won't score many goals but they'll put in enough to win games. Germany have an easy draw to the final but they aren't as good in my opinion as either France or Italy. Tournament top player-Franck Ribery. And unfortunately Spain will run into it's nemesis France once again in the quarterfinals and get put out of the competition. That half of the draw is far more difficult than the other side. |

A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Holland, France D: Spain, Sweden Quarters: Portugal, Germany, Holland, France Semis: Germany, Holland Final: Germany I was so torn about which two teams would come out of the "Group of Death" but decided that Cannavaro's injury might make the difference for Italy. Like Hector I think Spain will run into troubles against France, who really are their nemesis and once more the quarterfinals will be as far as they'll go. Holland's attack will be the best in this tournament and I think will carry them to the final but there they'll run into a strong German team who'll take the crown. Ballack, van Nistelrooy, Sneijder and Ribery will be the players of the tournament. |

A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Italy, France D: Spain, Russia 1/4 finals: Portugal, Germany, Italy, Spain 1/2 finals: Portugal, Spain final: Spain Hey you have to believe in your own nation! I foresee an Iberian Euro 2008 with a Portugal-Spain final. Both nations will shake off their past disappointments and get by Germany and Italy in the semifinals. David Villa and Cristiano Ronaldo will be the players of the tournament. |

If it is not too late I'll add my own selections: A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Italy, Holland D: Spain, Russia 1/4 finals: Portugal, Germany, Italy, Holland 1/2 finals: Germany, Holland final: Holland Twenty years later Holland repeats it's victory over Germany in a European championship. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder lead the Dutch to the title. |

My pre-tournament picks (which might more wisely be called "gambles" as opposed to clear-headed selections) Group A: Switzerland & Turkey (!) Group B: Germany & Croatia Group C: Romania & Holland (!) Group D: Spain & Russia QF winners - Germany, Croatia, Spain & Russia SF Winners - Croatia & Spain (just) Winners - Spain Having watched the first four games my prediction that Portugal would be the "surprise flop" of the tournament looks ridiculous. As does the fact that I was "sucked in" to thinking that one of the hosts must make the quarters. I now haven't got a clue who will progress (with Portugal unfortunately) from Group A - but might have to go with Turkey (even if this is largely based on how disappointed Turks have been with their performance - which I thought wasn't bad up to the final third). I'm also now much less "convinced" about Croatia. Very pleased that Austria are so much better than predicted though. And finally to explain my Group C "logic". Today: Holland 1 Italy (who always start slow) 0 while Romania (who might be slightly underrated) hold France to a draw. Matchday 2: 2 more draws. So going into the final matchday Holland 4, France 2, Romania 2, Italy 1. Holland are the sort of team that can beat anyone on their day but can also lose to anyone (certainly of Romania's standard - see the qualifiers) & with a Romania win there 2/3 results in the France-Italy game would see both those teams eliminated. |

So every team have played once and the big winners were Holland and Spain each with 3 goal wins over Italy and Russia. Solid two goal victories for Portugal, Germany and Sweden. Unlucky losses for both hosts and a couple of teams, France, Romania, Croatia, Greece who look apathetic out there. In general a pretty good start to the tournament. Now we get down to the second set of matches for every team and a better idea of how these groups will eventually play out. |

Ok just for fun, as we weren't officially conducting a contest, but I thought I'd compile how our picks to advance to the quarterfinals looked. I gave 2 points for picking a team in the right position where they finished (i.e Portugal finishing in first place in it's group) and 1 point for selecting the right team advancing out of it's group but not in the place where they finished (i.e picking Italy to win it's group when they actually finished 2nd). And before anyone claims it, no there was no fix! Remember this is only after one round, I'll be giving 2 points for picking the correct winner the rest of the way. So this is how it looks now: Merengue 12 pts. Don Balon 10 cafetero 10 raconteur 10 libero 10 Mr. Pither 10 hobbes 10 Yogi 9 shelsoccer 9 Hector 9 gaviota 9 badgerboy 9 Martin 8 Simon 7 Gunners 7 Manzanares 7 Nkono 6 Credit to badgerboy who was the only one of us to select Turkey to advance. Just about everyone picked Germany and Croatia to move on from Group B, but none of us picked them in the order where they finished. My current lead is because I predicted both Groups C and D in the exact order they finished. |

I have no say in this (thanks to my untimely neglect of the board), but I recall that when we played this guessing game in June '06, the correct quarterfinal, semifinal, and winners' picks got progressively more points. That's what knocked me out of the running--I was second after the group stage but finished midpack, after failing to predict the rise of France. Good luck, folks... |
