Patrick Vieira may not be able to play Euro 2008 due to a thigh injury. So far he's missed both of France's warm up games because of that injury. So Domenech has called Mathieu Flamini back into camp but have not yet officially added him to the roster. Apparently because of an injury you can change a player up to a day before your first game so they'll wait till then to decide if Vieira can go or not. |

Flamini for Vieira, if it happens will end up helping France I think. Flamini is younger, more verstaile and more dynamic than Vieiera who due to injuries and age has had a poor season. |

I was reading today that Vieira likely will only miss the opening game for France against Romania but that otherwise he should be fine for the remaining games. If so he'll remain on the roster. Russia's Pogbrenyak, however, will miss the tournament. That's a tough loss for them added to Arshavin's two game suspension. Russia has a promising team but those are two big absences. |

If they were pop stars (according to The Sunday Times): Czech Republic would be Queen - not the same without their biggest star Portugal would be Van Morrison - a stayer, but prone to tantrums Switzerland would be Andy Abraham (British Eurovision entry) - unlikely to win anything in Europe. Turkey would be Pete Doherty - Not sure what they're doing Austria would be Westlife - cringeworthy and hopeless Croatia would be Sinead O'Connor - dangerously unpredictable Poland would be Nirvana - all likely to end in tears Germany would be R.E.M. - not as good as they were in the 90s France would be Madonna - not as good as they were in the 80s Holland would be David Bowie - not as good as they were in the 70s Italy would be Bon Jovie - predictable but effective Romania would be Amy Winehouse - could soon need a get-out-of-jail card Greece would be Sting - irritating but difficult to get rid of Russia would be Scissor Sisters - all style, little substance Spain would be Arctic Monkeys - don't do anything abroad Sweden would be Coldplay - dull but ultimately worthy I'm sure we could each find opinions there to take issue with, both footballing and musical, but it's a pretty amusing angle to preview these championships! |

That's some funny shit, Simon! My favs are Greece/Sting and Germany/R.E.M. Sting just drew a sell out 18,500 in my little Omaha hometown. I'm tellin' ya, you can't get rid of that guy! (They say the best part of his show was the opening act--Elvis Costello!) |

That is good Simon and I'm with John about the two funniest ones, at least to this middle aged man who has no idea who or what Scissor Sisters, Westlife, Arctic Monkeys or Pete Doherty are! |

I actually found the Russia-Scissor Sisters one funniest, but I hope it isn’t true. Westlife are a pretty boy band with no talent. Scissor Sisters are ummm a flamboyant disco-y, glam band popular mostly in the UK (though they’re from NYC), The Arctic Monkeys’ debut single debuted at number one thanks to a wave of internet buzz. Which meant they also had some of the fastest backlash in recent history. Which is too bad because they’re pretty good. I don’t even know where to start on Pete Doherty. He’s a bad influence on Kate Moss. He’s turned to Islam now that he’s in jail. He’s a talented musician who makes no apologies about being addicted to heroin or crack. In fact he likes to gleefully cover ‘Who’s Got The Crack’ by the Moldy Peaches (I always thought the original was ironic) live in concert. He’s an unpredictable mess. I would have said Greece were Nickelback. And Portugal is not Van Morrison! Thanks for that Simon. I needed the laugh. The stuff in the Polish tabloids today is pretty interesting. cheers, hobbes |

Not to mention that every politician seemed to be advised to regularly namecheck the Arctic Monkeys to score credibility points, and so we were informed by Gordon Brown that he 'likes to wake up to the Arctic Monkeys'. The other lot are just as bad of course, I noticed a the Smiths' Hatful of Hollow album 'carelessly' tossed onto a pile of David Cameron's papers during one photoshoot in his office  Not the Arctic Monkeys' fault though, and they are very good. Greece as your fellow canucks Nickleback works for me as well! John, Elvis Costello supporting Sting? Sounds like your little Omaha town can draw the big names to what sounds like a good-sized arena. Irritating and difficult to get rid of names or not! |

Anybody willing to make any predictions for the Euro Cup? I'll start off by saying Germany will win the tournament by beating France in the final. Germany have a strong attack, a game winning player in Ballack and have a team who are maturing since the last World Cup. France will get that far because they'll be hard to score upon and in Ribery have a guy, like Ballack, capable of winning a game. |

So with one day left it's time for us to put our money where our mouth is, eh? Okay, here goes: Group A: Portugal, Switzerland Group B: Germany, Croatia Group C: Italy, France Group D: Spain, Greece Quarter-Finals: Portugal beat Croatia, Germany beat Switzerland, Italy beat Greece, Spain beat France Semi-Finals: Germany beat Portugal, Italy beat Spain Final: Germany beat Italy So I've also gone with Germany to win, which kind of surprised me as I don't think this is a very strong Germany team. But their opponents in Group B are pretty weak, and providing Portugal win an equally-weak Group A, Germany shouldn't really be tested until the semi-finals! Once there, they'll have built up a head of steam which should be enough to account for Portugal. I found the other half of the draw trickier to predict. I don't see Spain having a problem in what looks like a fairly accessible Group D, but once they emerge into the quarters they must play a team from the 'group of death'. I reckon that will be France who are often Spain's nemesis, but I'm just not taken with this France team. A heck of a lot rests on Ribery's shoulders and IMO Spain will never have a better chance to lay that ghost to rest. Which gave me a Spain-Italy semi-final match-up and frankly I could have tossed a coin to decide that one. In the end, I leaned towards Italy for what may be their extra experience and ruthlessness. So to a Germany-Italy final. I mentioned a couple of reservations about Italy earlier up this thread, but I still think they're a stronger side than Germany. However when it came down to it, maybe the voice of history was whispering to me that even pretty ordinary German sides are damn hard to stop when they get this far. I can just see them nicking it, either against a weakened Italian defence or, of course, via a penalty shoot-out! |

Group A: Portugal, Czech Republic Group B: Germany, Croatia Group C: Italy, France Group D: Spain, Sweden Quarters: Portugal over Croatia; Germany over Czech Republic; Italy over Sweden; Spain over France Semis: Portugal over Germany; Italy over Spain Finals: Portugal over Italy I guess it's dangerous to pick a champion which lacks a world-class center forward, but oh well. It's also dangerous not to pick at least one of the hosts to advance. However, Austria is awful, and the Swiss have a tough group. I would have picked the Swiss to advance over Croata in Group B and maybe over France in Group C, but I think the Portuguese and the Czechs will be too tough. |

A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Holland, Italy D: Spain, Russia Quarters: Portugal over Croatia, Germany over Czech Republic, Holland over Russia, Spain over Italy Semis: Germany over Portugal, Spain over Holland (picking with my heart over my brain?) Final: Germany over Spain Germany just has too much power and a deep set of forwards. I don't see any team beating them. |

A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Italy, France D: Spain, Sweden Quarterfinals: Portugal win Croatia; Germnay win czech; Italy win Sweden; Spain win France Semifinals: Germany win Portugal; Italy win Spain Final: Italy win Germany Even without Cannavaro Italy will win the title. They have a deep roster with many attacking variables. Plus they have Germany's number in big matches! |

I like your thinking Manzanares! A: Portugal, Czech Republic B: Germany, Croatia C: Italy, France D: Spain, Russia Quarterfinals: Portugal over Croatia; Germany over Czech Rep.; Italy win Russia; Spain over France Semifinals: Germany over Portugal; Italy over Spain Final: Italy over Germany Like Manzanares wrote, Italy has the depth and the variations to play different styles which will I feel carry them to the title. Cannavaro's loss will be covered by Barzagli and the team's overall defensive ability. Look for Andrea Pirlo to have a big tournament. |
