From Mexico there is Ramon Morales of Chivas and Mexico's national team and his younger brother Carlos Adrian Morales of Toluca. Carlos had a couple of national team appearances and I think once replaced his brother in a national team match. I can't recall if they ever played together for Mexico but I doubt it as they are both left sided midfielders. Ramon is the better of the two Morales brothers.

Until recently there was another set of brothers in Mexico, Duilio Davino of America and his brother Flavio Davino who was with Tecos until he retired last year. Duilio still plays for America but no longer is on Mexico's national team. I don't know their father's name but he was an Argentinian pro who played in Mexico and married a Mexican woman and settled in the country after retiring. Now here is another family connection, when Flavio Davino retired he went to work for his father in law Ricardo Lavolpe, first as an assistant to Lavolpe at Boca and currently with Velez, both of course in Argentina. Lavolpe has another daughter married to a footballer, Rafael Garcia who was controversially included in his father in law's team for Mexico's entry in the 2006 World Cup even though at the time Rafael Garcia was only a reserve midfielder with his club team Cruz Azul!

Former Mexican international Luis Roberto Alves (aka Zague or Zaguinho) now is an official with his former club America in Mexico. Alves' father also was a former pro with America and he too married a Mexican woman and settled in the country. Mexcio's newest sensation is Giovani Dos Santos of Barcelona and he too is the son of a foreign footballer who married a Mexican woman. Dos Santos' father is the Brazilian born Zizinho who had a successful career with America and Leon in Mexico. Giovani Dos Santos also has a younger brother Jonathan who is in Barcelona's youth system. Then of course there is Mexico's other new star Nery Castillo who was born in Mexico when his Uruguayan father of the same name was playing professionally for San Luis.

One of the legends of Guadalajara when they were winning championship after championship in Mexico in the late 50's through the 60's was Salvador Chava Reyes an excellent forward and still Guadalajara's all time leading goalscorer. His son of the same name also was a professional forward with Guadalajara and Puebla in the 80's and 90's but never had the success of his father. The younger Salvador Reyes is (was?) the coach of Queretaro who were relegated last season from Mexico's first division.
Esas son las leyendas de futbol mexicano,
En todo Mexico hay un Chiva hermano!

This is a great thread, I think you guys have named most of the family connections that I was thinking of. I'm with Merengue that the best father-son combos are the Maldinis and Mazzolas while the best brother combos are the Charltons.

But here are a few more father-son combinations that I know of from Uruguay. Pablo Forlan the father of Diego Forlan the current Uruguayan international with Atletico Madrid, was a defender with Uruguay in the 1966 and 1974 World Cups. Julio Montero Castillo was a defender on Uruguay's 1970 and 1974 World Cup teams and is the father of Paolo Montero. Interestingly the fathers were teammates with Uruguay in the 1974 World Cup while the sons played together in the 2002 tournament. Victor Diogo was on Uruguay's team in the early 80's but never made it to a World Cup while his son Carlos Diogo is a current Uruguayan international.

There also are a couple of notable Argentinian father-son combinations that haven't yet been mentioned. Jorge Higuain, a former defender with River Plate and Boca Juniors and Brest in France is the father of two forwards currently playing, Gonzalo is a forward with Real Madrid while Federico was just transfered to Besiktas in Turkey. Gonzalo Higuain was born in France while his father played there and France tried unsuccessfully to recruit him for their national teams. But there is a father son combination where the son went on to represent a different country than his father! Vicente Pernia was a defender with Boca Juniors in the 80's and played alonsgide Diego Maradona on Boca's only championship winning team during Maradona's time with the club. Pernia never made it to a World Cup but was a good defender who did appear for Argentina. His son also a defender named Vicente who played for independiente in Argentina before emigrating to Spain where he acquired Spanish citizenship and represented Spain at the 2006 World Cup!

Vicente Pernia, father and son aren't the only set of father and son who've gone on to represent different national teams. There also is the story of Toto Tamuz who plays for Israel now and his father Clement Temile a former Nigerian international forward.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/foo...icle1550898.ece

Quote:

Toto was born in Nigeria. At the age of 2, his parents took him to Israel, where Temile, a talented and speedy forward for Nigeria, played professionally. After his career ended, Temile remained in the country beyond the length of his visa and Toto was sent to live with one of Temile’s teammates — so he could go to school, according to his father. Aged 8, the boy was informally adopted by an Israeli woman and raised as a Jew. “In good hands all the while,” Temile said. “I was living in another town, visiting at weekends.”

Father and son are estranged now but the linked article was written before England played Israel last march, a game where Tamuz started. i don't know if he's in Israel's team for this week's return match at Wembley.

Here is another father and son situation that has been in the news recently. Daniel Aquino a forward with Spain's U-17 team is a youth team player for Murcia and has been one of Spain's better players in their move in their route to the U-17 title game. His father Daniel El Toro Aquino was an Argentinian born footballer who played most of his career in Spain including most notably with Murcia. Both father and son are forwards.

Daniel Aquino, the father did play a couple of times for Argentina so if his son goes on to reprsent Sopain at the snior level then we'll have our third father-son combo represneting different countries afetr the Pernias, Temile/Tamuz and Aquino.

One of the sensations of the new season in Argentina is modest club Tigre whose goalie is Daniel Islas, the younger brother of Luis Islas who was Argentina's starting goalie at USA 94 and a backup at two previous World Cups.

Watching today's games from Spain I was reminded of two more brother combinations in La Liga. Scoring a goal today for Almeria was their forward/outside midfielder Kalu Uche who is the older brother of Ike Uche who was with Recreativo but now is the starting forward with Getafe.

And Valencia's midfielder Ruben Baraja played today against Valladolid where his brother Javier Baraja is a defender.

Interesting thread, I'm glad I found it.

I can think of a few that haven't yet been mentioned. The most prominent example would be Gary and Phil Neville, who played together for United together for many years and won a string of championships, FA Cups and the Champions League. It's often been said that Phil is actually the more naturally talented footballer but that his versatility has actually counted against him by making him a kind of utility man. Of course, Phil left United in 2005 but is now the highly-regarded captain of a very good Everton side. The pair have a record 143 England caps between them, 85 for Gary and 58 for Phil. Two bits of trivia: Phil was an excellent young cricketer and, like Gary Lineker before him, had a choice to make between the two sports. He played alongside Andrew Flintoff in the Lancashire under-19s team and captained England's under-15s side. Also, Phil's twin sister Tracey Neville is an England international at Netball. Talented family! Their father, the brilliantly named Neville Neville, must be very proud. Speaking of talented familes, Bobby and Jack Charlton's uncle was none other than Jackie Milburn, a legendary England striker of the 40s and 50s and who was Newcastle's all-time top scorer until overtaken recently by Alan Shearer.

United also had a pair of brothers named Jimmy and Brian Greenhoff who played for them in the 1970s and were both in the 1977 Cup winning team. Jimmy was a skilful striker and England under-23 player who was once United Supporter's Player of the Year and later had a brief spell at Toronto Blizzard. Brian was a central defender who won 18 full England caps.

Juan Sebastian Veron's father Juan Ramon Veron used to play for Estudiantes, of course. He's best remembered in these parts for his winning goal against Manchester United in the notorious 1968 Intercontinental Cup matches, which are actually still remembered in Manchester with some bitterness even after all these years, due to Estudiantes' violent play. Although not apparently from Veron himself, one of the key culprits was a certain chap named Carlos Bilardo!

Some other examples - I think Kaka's brother Digao is also currently at AC Milan. Emile and Mbo Mpenza used to play for Belgium together. I think Rai was the younger brother of Socrates, although my mind may be playing tricks? The Altintop brothers Halil and Hamit both play in Germany and for Turkey. United won the league in 1993 with Alex Ferguson's son Darren in midfield (he made 27 appearances for United in all). CSKA Moscow and Russia field the twin Berezutsky brothers in defence, and I think Youri Djorkaeff's dad played for France at the 1966 World Cup. Sometimes these things are real dynasties, I think several generations of the Laudrup family have been footballers while in England we have the Allen family, at least 7 of whom have been good players over different generations. Les Allen was in the legendary Spurs double-winning team of 1961. His sons Clive and Bradley were both good top-flight strikers, in fact Clive was Player of the Year and scored 60 goals while at Spurs and played for England. Cousin Paul also played for Spurs, while cousin Martin was West Ham boss. Both cousins were the son of Les's brother Dennis who used to play for Charlton and Reading. Finally, Clive's son Oliver was on Birmingham's books and is now at Stevenage having scored against Spurs in a pre-season friendly!

Good work Simon, thanks for your contributions to the thread. I can't believe no one else thought of Gary and Phil Neville before, one of the more prominent brother acts among current players. Are you serious about their father being named Neville Neville! That's great. I guess his parents had a sense of humor!

And the Laudrup brothers Michael and Brian are a good one too, one of the better brother acts of all time I'd think. I believe their father who Simon referenced is named Finn Laudrup and was a noted Danish footballer. Although Michael Laudrup is now coaching Getafe one of his sons is in Real Madrid's youth academy as is Zinedine Zidane's son Enzo.

And the Verons, Juan Ramon (father) and Juan Sebastian (son) also have to rank as one of the best father-son combinations ever. I'm not sure how all of us forgot to name them before but good job in bringing them up.

Socrates and Rai are brothers and while Socrates was the better of the two it is Rai who is a World Cup winner.

Here are acouple of other brother acts I can think of, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and his twin Gustavo. They came up together with Gimnasia La Plata in Argentina then eventually went their separate ways and while Guillermo is now with Columbus in the US after a long and successful career with Boca Juniors, Gustavo was playing for Puerto Rico in the US' version of a 2nd Division until he retired earlier this year.

Another set of brothers who have been discussed in the Canada forum are Julian de Guzman and his younger brother Jonathan. Julian is a Canadian international with Deportivo in Spain while Jonathan is at Feyenoord in Holland and still deciding f he wants to play for Canada or Holland internationally. Just don't get fellow poster Hobbes started on that subject! ;)

Simon, you mentioned Bobby and Jack Charlton's uncle was Jackie Milburn, another good reference, but does that also mean the Charltons are geordies?

Why aye (that is geordie for 'yes') :D
There is actually a third Charlton brother, I wonder if he ever reflects on what might have been? According to Sir Bobby's recently published autobiography, Tommy Charlton was actually a really talented footballer who nevertheless preferred a career working in the mines. Each to their own, as they say...

Really the big deal about United's famous Busby Babes is that Matt Busby was so far ahead of his time in instituting a really well-organised youth system. He took over United in 1946 when the club had been going nowhere for years, was poverty-stricken and had a stadium utterly ruined by German bombing raids. He knew he couldn't do much in the transfer market so he set up the most extensive scouting network that had ever been seen. 10 years later it paid off. There were several local lads in the Busby Babes side but really it was like a dream team of all the best young talent from the British Isles. Charlton is a Geordie, Duncan Edwards was from the Midlands, Billy Whelen was from Ireland etc. Of course these days the big clubs have truly global scouting networks but Busby was very much ahead of his time. 50 years on I think Newcastle are still kicking themselves that they missed out!

Ramon Diaz of San Lorenzo signed both of his sons to play in San Lorenzo, and I think both of them are mid fielders. There are a pair of brothers playing in CSKA Moscow as well, I think they're the Ovechkyn brothers, and the Koeman brothers are a famous pair of brothers who also play(ed) professionally together.

EDIT: There was another one I wanted to add, Kieron Dyer's cousin, Kenny Dyer, was one of my coaches at Soccer Academy last July :D

Alfredo Tena and his brother Luis Fernando Tena were professional players in Mexico, Alfredo being the more famous as a player and went on to represent Mexico many times. Now both are coaches who've won league titles before. Luis Fernando Tena currently coaches America in Mexico while Alfredo is working with America's youth teams and is in the front office after once being his brother's assistant.

Here is another brother combination that just came to me as we were discussing in the League History thread in the Argentina forum about Independiente's 1984 Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup champions whose starting left back was Carlos Enrique. Carlos' brother Hector Enrique was a starting midfielder on Argentina's 1986 World Cup champion and is the answer to the famous trivia question of who passed the ball to Diego Maradona before he went off on his great slalom run through England's defense to score the goal which was voted the greatest in the sport's history.

Hector Enrique also won both the Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1986 with River Plate so the Enrique brothers have the distinction of both winning those two tournaments. I don't know if any other sets of brothers can claim that.

Talking about brother acts there are Ronald and Erwin Koeman both members of Holland's 1988 European championship winning team. After retiring as active players both got into coaching but older brother Erwin, just as in their playing carers, has never experienced quite the success as Ronald.
