I am with Simon that is a proper punishment for both Celtic (money but no stadium ban) and for Dida (he should be suspended for some games the question always was for how many?). Governing bodies don't always get these things right but this is one instance where I think they did. |

I think Celtic's punishment is about right but I think Dida got off easy. His ban was less than what auxiliary members of the Inter-Valencia fight got. Players like Cordoba and Maicon who weren't primary characters in the post game brawl last spring received 3 or 4 game suspensions and they didn't as far as I know even throw any punches. What Dida did was bring the game into disrepute by a terrible job of play acting. It wasn't just that he went down after a light brush and after taking 4 steps after his pursuer but that he then continued to embellish the injuries and faked requiring being stretchered off and substititued out of the game! At a minimum I think he should have been suspended for four European games. |

Are Arsenal that good or Slavia Prague that bad? No real surprises today, I'll wiat for Winslow to give the complete summary since he does that so well. Lyon's win at Stuttgart gives them hope and all but ends slumping Stuttgart's chances. |

No need to wait for me, Rosarino; I don't hold the CL Internet rights! Anyway--Tuesday's games... . . . . . . Group E: Rangers 0, Barcelona 0; Stuttgart 0, Lyon 2. Group F: Dynamo Kyiv 2, Man United 4; Roma 2, Sporting Lisbon 1. Group G: CSKA Moscow 1, Inter 2; PSV Eindhoven 0, Fenerbahce 0. Group H: Arsenal 7, Slavia Prague 0; Sevilla 2, Steaua Bucharest 1. So the walloping at the Emirates is the only real surprise of the evening. Cesc and Walcott scored twice for the Gunners, who tied a CL record for the most lopsided win. (There's no prize, but who remembers the other 7-0 match?) Sevilla stays alone in second place, thanks to goals from Kanoute and Luis Fabiano. C. Ronaldo also had a brace as Man U won comfortably on the road, while Barca couldn't break through at Ibrox. Lyon finally got off the pot as Stuttgart lost its second straight at home; Inter fell behind around the half-hour, then got second-half goals from Crespo and Samuel to take the lead in Group G. Roma lost Totti late in the first half, but his substitute Vucinic scored the winner; PSV had a man advantage for the last half-hour but still couldn't beat the Turks. |

Despite the seven goals at Arsenal it's the Kiev defence being described as the worst in the competition. I only saw the first half but would have to agree, I've never seen anything like it. United should have scored 40, not 4

I only saw the highlights, but i have to agree. It looked incredibly easy for the United players to be first on any cross coming in to the area. Maybe the return at OT will beat that 7-0 record. |

If there is anything comforting in these lopsided scores it is that teams are looking to attack even when playing on the road. |

You have to applaud Arsenal for their attacking play. They may be a very young team but they are not only playing well but doing it in style. |

Dreadful night for us yet again. Reminds me of the 90's and our failed European runs where we lost against Brondby and Celta Vigo in seperate years. At least Celtic faired out a tad better. UEFA Champions League AC Milan 4-1 Shakhtar Donetsk Benfica 1-0 Celtic Besiktas 2-1 Liverpool Chelsea 2-0 Schalke 04 Marseille 1-1 FC Porto Real Madrid 4-2 Olympiakos Rosenborg 2-0 Valencia Werder Bremen 2-1 Lazio |

Yeah, Liverpool's in trouble after losing in Istanbul, but if it can beat Besiktas and Porto at home, the Reds can bail out the sinking ship. Marseille dropped points at home, but still leads the group. A bit of a shocker in Norway, as Valencia fell to a convincing Rosenborg display; the Ches are now bottom of the group on goal difference. Chelsea got an early break as Schalke's keeper let an ordinary ball go through his legs, then Drogba sealed it just after halftime. Bremen finally got it going, beating Lazio with goals from Sanogo and Almeida. Olympiakos went down to ten men after just 13 minutes but actually took a 2-1 lead before Robinho scored a pair to keep Real on top of the group. Milan bounced back from a weak effort in Serie A, getting two goals each from Gilardino and Seedorf, while Celtic held on for 87 minutes before giving up the goal that gave Benfica a win it really, really needed. |

From a British perspective, United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Rangers are doing very well, and Celtic have beaten the holders AC Milan. It's only Liverpool letting the side down for the home countries! Seriously, very satisfactory night for United yesterday. Our attacking line-up seems finally to have clicked after all those 1-0 wins. That's our third consecutive 4 goal haul but as sledge and siralfred said, the only frustration was that we really should have scored 8 or 9 with the chances we made. I forget how many games on the trot that Arsenal have won now, but it's well into double figures and there was no danger of poor Slavia halting their run. Slavia didn't even seem to be all that bad, but Arsenal blew them away with some exhilarating football. The gunners' next two games against Liverpool and United, and it'll be very interesting to see how they measure up. Chelsea built on their win in Valencia with a comfortable home win over Schalke, complete with the amusing sight of Drogba thumping his badge and blowing kisses to the fans despite his outspoken comments about wanting to leave. Chelsea look good for another long run in this competition. |

A disaster for Valencia and we're in deep trouble now. There is just no spark to Valencia now and even the normally solid defense is showing a bit of vulnerability. But most important the midfield isn't providing service to the forwards. Hard to believe Valencia has played reasonably well in league games but are a disaster in Europe. Madrid ended up winning by 2 goals over a 10 man Olimpiacos but it was a much closer game than that score would indicate and although Robinho was Madrid's hero they were in a complicated situation until the end. Right now Arsenal's play has been the talk of Europe and they are on a great run. But recall most teams hot in October don't remain that way through May. |

I like Milan's 4-1 win over a pretty good Shakhtar Donetsk team. Two each from Gilardino and Seedorf so the team are getting contributions from more than just Kaka and Inzaghi! Proof I think that when Milan are motivated they can be very dangerous. The problem is finding when they'll have that motivation. This early season it seems reserved almost entirely, but not completely, for the Champions League matches. |

Let's take a look at this week's matches in the Champions League: Group A Liverpool (1 pt) v Besiktas (3 pts) Porto (5 pts) v Marseille (7 pts) Liverpool find themselves in the unusual position of fighting for their lives in the group phase of the competition. Steven Gerrard has issued his usual rallying cry, but then he did that before the last match with Besiktas and it didn't seem to help. The reds seem locked into a run of poor form, yet domestically at least they are tending to draw matches rather than lose them. A draw is no good to them tonight though, and I do think they'll find a win from somewhere even if it might be a nervy night. Neither Porto nor Marseille have looked exceptional at any point yet, which provides further hope for Liverpool. Porto have scored one goal in each match so far, and I think if they can do that again tonight it may be good enough for a win. Group B Valencia (3 pts) v Rosenborg (4 pts) Schalke (3 pts) v Chelsea (7 pts) Valencia have lost at home to Chelsea and in that suprise defeat in Norway, and of course have also had those traumatic humblings against Sevilla and Real Madrid. But Valencia haven't become a bad side overnight - the talent is clearly still there and on the face of it tonight's game offers a great chance to turn the corner from this poor period, building on their win at the weekend. Interestingly, Chelsea are right back to winning ways and are actually playing more entertaining and attacking football under Grant. They beat Leicester 4-3 in the League Cup last week, not a scoreline you would associate with Mourinho! Schalke are really struggling right now and I think Chelsea look well equipped to go to Germany and win. Group C Lazio (2 pts) v Werder Bremen (3 pts) Olympiacos (4 pts) v Real Madrid (7 pts) Another summit meeting between Olympiacos and Real Madrid. The Greeks played excellently at the Bernebeu but were ultimately undone. Nevertheless they seem to have overcome their phobia of away matches which bodes well for them, but the key to advancement has always been winning your home games and picking up a couple of points on the road and I think Olympiacos will struggle to do that. They've played one home game, with Lazio, and drawn it. Will they win their home games with Real and Werder? I'm not convinced. I think Real will get at least a point in Greece. Werder Bremen are playing well and seem to have good options up front from Hugo Almeida and Sanogo, with Diego as dangerous as ever in behind. Lazio have lost 4 of their last 5 league games and have yet to win in the CL. This is a must win match for them, but I like Werder's chances of going to Rome and coming away with 3 points. Group D Celtic (3 pts) v Benfica (3 pts) Shakhtar (6 pts) v Milan (6 pts) The good news for Celtic is that they have just one more away match to play! It remains strange for a club to be virtually unbeatable at home, and to have taken the recent scalps of Manchester United and AC Milan at Parkhead, and yet to have gone over 20 competitive away games without a win in Europe. I suspect that Celtic will beat Benfica tonight, and they will probably hope that Milan can beat Shakhtar. That in itself is open to question of course. A pattern is at least emerging from Milan's chaotic form so far - they tend to do better away from home than at San Siro! That said, they won 4-1 at home to Shakhtar and it's hard to imagine them not winning this one tonight. Group E Lyon (3 pts) v Stuttgart (0 pts) Barcelona (7 pts) v Rangers (7 pts) For reasons best explained by someone who's seen them more than I have, German champions Stuttgart have been a disaster this season. Already defeated 6 times in the Bundesliga and lying bottom of their CL group with no points and just one goal scored. Lyon have hardly had them most enjoyable of seasons so far, but at least they can be predicted to win this one with some measure of comfort. As for Rangers, I've backed against them every time so far and been proved wrong each time. So I'll do them a big favour by saying I expect Barca to beat them in the Nou Camp! Group F Man. United (9 pts) v Dynamo Kyiv (0 pts) Sporting Lisbon (3 pts) v Roma (6 pts) I'm very satisfied with United's season so far. After a few wobbles in August and a very un-United period of winning each game 1-0, we now seem to be approaching top form. Rooney just can't stop scoring goals at them moment and Ronaldo, Tevez and Giggs have been a superb supporting cast. Anderson has been magnificent for us recently which at least softens the blow of losing Scholes for 3 months, while Hargreaves is now fit and perhaps, wonder of wonders, Saha is now fit as well. Meanwhile the defence is playing really well and I think Rio and Vidic is as good a partnership as you'll find in world football right now. Being superstitious, I'll still stop short of predicting we'll beat Dynamo though! Roma have looked a bit inconsistent recently, in recent times they've beaten Milan and Lazio while drawing 4-4 with Napoli and throwing away a 2-0 lead at Empoli. But they still look the best bet to join United in the last 16 and I think a draw tonight will help them achieve that. Group G Internazionale (6 pts) v CSKA Moscow (1 pt) Fenerbahce (5 pts) v PSV (4 pts) I've been a bit surprised by how a talented CSKA side are misfiring in Europe so far, and I don't suppose they'll reverse that trend in the San Siro against Inter. Inter still look to be playing within themselves this season, but that's still been enough for them to go top both of their CL group and Serie A. I'm pretty sure they'll win tonight and stengthen their position. Fener against PSV is quite unpredictable, but PSV don't look to me to have too much about them this year. Fenerbahce can win tonight and will never have a better chance to make the knockout phase. Group H Steaua (0 pts) v Sevilla (6 pts) Slavia (3 pts) v Arsenal (9 pts) Arsenal have had things all their own way so far, and they simply outclassed Slavia last time. The Czechs must be wincing at the thought of playing Arsenal again, but stranger things have happened in football than for them to pull a win out tonight. Not that I think it'll happen though, Arsenal are combining resilience and character with their great football, and that should be a winning combination tonight. Despite Slavia's mauling in north London, it is Steaua who sit bottom of this group and I think they are in for another bad night, especially now Sevilla seem to have found their feet. When the draw was made we all looked at this group as an easy one for Arsenal and Sevilla and I don't think we need to revise our opinions. |
