And Wednesday's scores... . . . . . . . Group A: Liverpool 0, Marseille 1; Besiktas 0, Porto 1. Group B: Valencia 1, Chelsea 2; Rosenborg 0, Schalke 2. Group C: Lazio 2, Real Madrid 2; Werder Bremen 1, Olympiakos 3. Group D: Celtic 2, AC Milan 1; Benfica 0, Shakhtar Donetsk 1. A regular traveling party! Hard to believe that Celtic was the only home team to win, but the Bhoys knocked off the Rossoneri on Scott McDonald's goal in the 90th minute. It sparked a mini-pitch invasion, and a fan apparently gave Dida a whack that sent him to the sidelines. Porto's winner came even later, in injury time. As one French team falls, another rises; Valbuena's unstoppable shot late in the second half made the difference for Marseille. Chelsea and Schalke needed their points and got them, while Bremen is still pointless and the Ukrainians have a perfect record. Strange, isn't it? |

Not much of a whack. Dida started to chase the intruder until (in a moment of inspiration), he realized Milan had to more to gain by playing hurt. Being carried off on a stretcher to an ambulance was a joke. Doesn't justify the pitch invasion -- Celtic will undoubtedly face penalties from UEFA -- but I'd like to see Dida punished as well. |

I don't think they were and I'm a United guy. I think Roma certainly had the better scoring chances, keeping in mind that they were pouring players forward at that time. I think Guilys absence from the play in the first half was a huge impact. They seemed much more threatening after he got forward some. I think a draw would have been a fair result but I'll take the three.

I'm really disappointed with Valencia's result against Chelsea. This was a golden opportunity to really take it to an injured Chelsea and especially in the first half Valencia played well, Villa got a nice opening goal and things were looking up. But a couple of defensive lapses and Chelsea scored twice. They had 2 goals on 3 shots in this match. A good conversion rate but Valencia just didn't finish or tried getting too cute with the ball. Now with Schalke's win, and this result Chelsea lead the group, Schalke are second, ahead of Valencia on goal difference. Hopefully Schalke and Chelsea can take some points off one another in their head to heads in the enxt two rounds while Valencia beats Rosenborg. But to do so the team will need to be more advantageous in front of goal. Dida's actions were a disgrace against Celtic. After seeing that you are glad to see Celtic pulled out a win in that match. Real Madrid had van Nistelrooy to thank for their draw with Lazio as he scored twice. But Pandev of Lazio also netteed two, both on nice shots. It was a pretty good match in Rome between the two teams. Marseile debuted a new coach Eric Gerets and he won in his first match. Liverpool depsite playing at home looekd flat and marseille were smart to try and take the play to them. Overall as Winslow said a wonderful day for the road teams. It is appearing as if there are, as many preicted here before this started, pretty evenly matched groups and that should make for some excitement as the group stages continue. |

valenciano I too think this was a great chance for your club to beat Chelsea when they were down but Drogba wouldn't let that happen. He worked hard all game long, kept Valencia's defenders occupied, set up Malouda for the cross which became the Blues' first goal then scored the second hismelf. he was definitely man of the match. To me Valencia just wanted to walk the ball in the net and even against a Chelsea going through self doubts, that is not easy to do. Liverpool just looked bad against Marseille. There was no spark to their play while Marseille seemed very loose for an away match against the European runner up. New coach for Marseille and they win, he had his team picking their spots to attack Liverpool well. |

Celtic will likely be facing a stadium ban as a result of that foolish fan's invasion of the field and considering Celtic's strong home record, that won't be an insignificant punishment for them. But Dida also should be suspended for his bad acting job. Either that or put him on a telenovela where his bad acting will fit in with the others! But seriously he should be suspended, as that was almost as bad as the Roberto Rojas incident back in 1989 when Chile's goalkeeper faked getting hit by a flair from the crowd in a World Cup qualifying game against Brasil. UEFA needs to clamp down on such faking by players and I think Dida should be banned at least 2 games, if not more, as a result of this. What a crazy Wednesday with only one home win, that Celtic victory thanks to their last minute game winner. Bremen blows a lead at home and loses 3-1 to Olimpiacos, the Greek club's first win in 31 away Champions League matches! Chelsea salvages some pride with their come from behind win at Valencia, a team which just doesn't seem to have what it takes to defeat Chelsea. And both Shakhtar Donetsk and Marseille have perfect records after 2 games thanks to their road wins. I'm not too disappointed with Madrid's road draw against Lazio as Lazio put Madrid under pressure with their work rate in this game but Madrid made some defensive lapses that cost them. Guti in particular had a poor game and he lost the ball in midfield late in the game which led to lazio's game tying goal. But the Raul-van Nistelrooy forward duo keeps on working and Raul set up van Nistelrooy's 2nd goal with a beautiful pass. |

Like Merengue I am very happy with the way the Raul-Van Nistelrooy partnership is working at Madrid. I'd agree the defense got a little casual at times which is something which has not been happening often under Schuster but the defense was a little makeshift with Heinze in the middle due to injuries to Metzelder and Pepe. But it was in midfield where Madrid were really below form yesterday especially Guti who ahd one of his poorest games in a long time. Overall I think the mistakes from yesterday are correctable and the team remains unbeaten so far in the new season so I am not concerned about the draw. Dida's antics did remind you of the Roberto Rojas incident in 1989. He didn't intentionally cut himself like Rojas did then but nevertheless Dida should be punished for attempting to deceive. First time I've ever seen a player stretchered off for a light tap! The road teams success are a sign of how the tournament is becoming more evenly matched. Recently some had been saying the gap between the really big European clubs and the rest were growing but successes from clubs like Shakhtar, Fenerbahce, Marseille, Rangers and Celtic show that teams outside the elite of Europe can still compete. |

I'd echo what everyone else has said about Dida, and I was also reminded of the Rojas incident from 1989. Clearly there shouldn't have been Celtic fans on the pitch and I'm sure there will be some punishment of the club, but I hope they throw the book at Dida. It's incidents like that that can make this sport look ridiculous. Everyone saw how tiny the contact was between the clown that ran on the pitch and Dida, and yet he hurled himself to the ground after a telltale five second delay. The ice pack and the stretcher to take him off were a total insult to the intelligence. How can a grown man act like that, when he knows TV cameras and thousands of people in the ground can see how minimal the contact was? It was a transparent attempt to get the game abandoned and Milan awarded a 3-0. UEFA have said they're investigating the simulation, but it would be nice if the word 'cheating' was used instead. I felt that the authorities fudged the similar despicable cheating of Rivaldo against Turkey in 2002, maybe they'll take appropriate action this time? |

What Dida did was horrible and an embarrassment to footballers everywhere. Look at the incident here: http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/futbol/...lo/1042997.html The fan looks to be trying to hug Dida and he takes four steps after him then crumbles to the ground! UEFA should ban Dida for the rest of the group stages at a minimum for bringing shame to the sport, his team and himself. I was content with Sevilla's victory over Slavia Praga. Kanoute was excellent in the match and I am wishing this win gives the team the confidence it seemed to have lost in its recent losing streak. There is plenty of time to gets it all sorted out. Valencia has a mental block against Celsea and i think Chelsea mentally is justa stronger team. Valencia has some internal problems and in a close match they don't appear to have the correct team spirit. Oh and Didier Drogba is an excellent forward. He's been missing during Chelsea's recent troubles. Now that he is back they are a different team. |

In discussing the benefits of atatcking on the road, in the CONMEBOL thread's Copa Sudamericana discussion, Pique quotes Marseille's coach as saying,
That is the type of attitude you like to see a visiting team's coach take in international competitions. It paid off for Marseille with their big win at Liverpool. It also looks like many other visiting teams on Wednesday took a similar approach and we see the results, only one of eight home teams won. Hopefully more teams will continue to play like this on the road. It will make for better overall entertainment and frankly is beneficial to the visitors. As for Dida, I think he should be banned for 6 months, as long as Valencia's David Navarro was for the punchup with Inter Milan last spring. I am not excusing Navarro's actions but they came in the heat of the moment, Dida thought about his as he starts chasing the fan then falls to the ground. Despicable. |

I guess I'll pile on and add my condemnation for Dida's actions. What was he thinking? Obviously he was looking to try and get the game abandoned with his team losing. Hopefully he does get a severe punishment for trying to reverse what happened on the field and for a horrible dive. Shaktar Donetsk have been one of the real surprises of the first two rounds with a perfect record in their group but now they'll be playing home and away against Milan in rounds 3 and 4. This is where we'll find out if they are contenders or pretenders. |

Seems to me it'll be just as much of a test for Milan to see if they can "get back on track". I won't deny that, as an Interista, I've been relishing in their poor form this season. I'd love to see them drop to the UEFA Cup and get knocked out there too. |

As the Milan fan here I can't defend what Dida did. It was a disgrace. My only consolation is I think Ancelotti has stuck with him too long now to begin with even as his play has dropped these past few years. If Dida does get a European suspension then this will force Ancelotti to look for other alternatives in goal. I wish the team didn't loan Abbiati out to Atletico Madrid as I wish he was the starting goalie now but Kalac the Australian likely will play if Dida is suspended. And sorry siralfred but Milan will still go farther in this year's Champions League than Inter. The nerazzurri will find a way to stub their toes next spring. |

Rangers are having a fantastic run, reminds me of Scotland in the Euro Championship qualifiers right now. We played dire in both halves of the game against Marseille. One of the worst European nights at Anfield since Genoa in the UEFA Cup and Spartak Moscow in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1991 and 1992 respectively. |

Wow, I remember those Genoa and Spartak ties. Tomas Skuhravy took Liverpool apart for Genoa didn't he? Happy days UEFA has pronounced on the Dida/Celtic case. £25,000 fine for Celtic and a two-match ban for Dida. I have to say I personally think that's about right. I'm really pleased they didn't just brush the Dida thing under the carpet, as I feared they'd do. |
