Not only fatigue from 120 minutes on top of a long season, but it was what? Like 1:15 a.m. Moscow time when Terry stepped up to take his PK.

Obviously just as late, fatiguing and as bad a surface for all players, but I have no issue with the decision to have Terry take this PK. He's captain, a big-time and big-game player, a real pro.

Sometimes, them's the breaks.

Oh, and someone did mention it already, but that abortive, stutter-stop-step approach of Robnaldo's was freakin' hilarious. He looked like an under 12 girl fer pete's sake adn it's too bad it dribbled in!!!

As I said in my post, had Terry made his shot we'd be talking about Ronaldo being the fool and he would be taking the brunt of the criticism.

He gets off, but if I'm in charge of that team I don't let him forget that. Just hit the ball Sergio!

Sergio? I would step up there and hit the ball!!

Any referees out there? In the past I thoiught the rules said you could not hesitate on your run up to take a penalty, but these past few years you see players doing what Cristiano Ronaldo did and take that stutter step. Ronaldo's countryman Luis Figo used to do that too. So has the rule changed and you can now stop in your run up to hit a penalty? Or was I mistaken and the rule preventing that never existed?

I'm not a ref, but I don't think the rule has changed. Even Tommy Smyth made reference to that rule after Ronaldo missed the shot. He said that he felt like it would have been call on him had he made the shot.

There's clear guidance now that only the worst of the worst feinting is a violation. According to both FIFA and US Soccer:

Feinting to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football. However, if in the opinion of the referee the feinting is considered an act of unsporting behaviour, the player shall be cautioned.
'Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I appreciate the information from a referee's perspective. But sounds like there is anything but a defined line there and the referee has a lot of discretion in determining whether the feinting is unsporting behavior.

I like it better when no feinting at all is allowed by the shooter. As an old coach of mine used to say, "Just step up there and place it!"

Good point -- i was remiss in saying there is "clear guidance". I guess it's better said that FIFA tried to emphasize that simply starting and stopping was not an infraction.

I also agree with your sentiment that it's all unnecessary anyway. Just pick a spot and go with it. Too much thinking creates problems.
