Andres Palop was the man with some Sergio Goycochea-like saves in the penalties. Good all around game which deteriorated a bit with the just expulsion of Moises Hurtado. Sevilla didn't play their best match and they did waste a lot of chances but Palop was there in the first half to make several good saves then had his penalty kick saving heroics at the end. Sevilla are building up quite a team. I hope they can keep them together and see what they can do next season in the Champions League. |

Espanyol did look out of it in the extra time until Jonatas came through with his nice long range goal. I was disappointed to see de la Pena taken off and so were the Espanyol fans, (did you hear the whistles?) but at least his replacement Jonatas came through with that goal even if he was one of the 3 Espanyol players to miss their penalties. No doubt the sending off changed the game as I thought Espanyol were slightly having more of the play until that point. Afterwards it was all Sevilla except for that long range shot by Jonatas to tie it up. A dramatic and entertaining game though and nice support from both sets of fans. Sevilla's dream season continues and like others here I also think they can use this victory as a way to build their title challenge in Spain. |

Although I was pulling for Espanyol I also enjoyed the UEFA Cup Final. I really enjoyed the first Sevilla goal as Palop grabbed a cross and threw the ball beyond midfield where Adriano outran David Garcia the Espanyol defender to come in one on one with the keeper where he scored. Surprising that Sevilla scored on the counter attacking team with...a counter attack! Espanyol were playing well until the ejection and then they defended well the rest of the way but didn't have much offensive effect, except of course for Jonatas' extra time goal. enganche, I have to question Valverde, the Espanyol coach, decision to take off both Tamudo and de la Pena. I know they needed to take out a forward after the red card but why Tamudo, their most effective counter attacker when they'd have to rely more than ever on that route down a man? And then why sub out their creative midfielder? As enganche mentioned, the Espanyol fans wondered the same and whistled the moves. As a Spaniard I was proud to see two teams from my country put on a good show for the world and that the fans also were a spectacle apart and were, as almost always with Spanish supporters, well behaved. It was a good day for Spanish football but in the end an even better one for Sevilla who really are having a historic season. |

Include me in those questioning Espanyol taking off their two best counter attackers at a time when they were really needed. I would have withdrawn Luis Garcia instead of Tamudo. But give Espanyol a lot of credit for playing a good match yesterday. We all know Sevilla's success this season but they were given all they could handle by a very willing Espanyol team. Good entertainment and an exciting match. penalties may not be the most just way to determine such games but they do add to the drama and Palop rose to the occasion at the right time. How appropriate he became the star after his goal earlier in the competition was the reason why Sevilla made it that far. |

I'll join the chorus and sing the praises of this game. I really enjoyed it. Funny thing happened where I was watching the game, a little bird, a sparrow I think, flew into the restaurant and landed near one of the TV screens, I then shouted to the amusement of the crowd that it was a perico (parakeet) coming to watch his team! Parakeets is the nickname for Espanyol. I think Kanoute, despite his goal, is showing the effect of his ongoing groin injury. I hear he may have to undergo surgery in the offseason. But it is obvious he is struggling a bit and not the force he was earlier in the season. Navas is another player who seems to be showing the strain of a hard season but to their credit and that of the entire team, Sevilla kept battling on and although yesterday was far from their best game of the season they were able to get the win and their historic repeat UEFA Cup title. Palop of course deserves a lot of the attention for his play. He finally made the move away from Valencia and acting as Canizares reserve and now is blossoming into one of the better keepers in Europe. Like others here I too wondered about taking off Tamudo and De La Pena when down a man and needing to counter attack. The only explanation I can come up with is they were a little winded and the fact Jonatas, De La Pena's sub, got the late game tying goal may justify Valverde's move but we also don't know what De La pena could ahve done with more time on the field. Good all around play from Espanyol and I liked how Riera, especially in the first half went right at Daniel Alves and made him work defensively and even scored the first Espanyol goal after beating Alves off the dribble. Espanyol can hold their heads up high for giving a good show in the final. Tough luck for them is this is the 2nd UEFA Cup Final they've now lost on penalties! |

I love dramatic games, this game was no exception. I really like how Spanish teams play, it's more free flowing and creative, than to Italys' defensive style of play. I can't wait for next years UEFA Cup, I predict that a Turkish team might win it. Probably Besiktas. Not sure why though, just a wild guess. The following teams are certain to play in the first qualifying round. Partizan Belgrade Austria Vienna Odense Groclin Grodzisk Vålerenga Hajduk Split Fredrikstad S.K. Brann Lillestrøm S.K. Sevilla and Espanyol did put on the good show so many of us were hoping for. I think Martin is right, Sevilla were a bit off their game, perhaps due to their fatigue and injuries, but Palop, a native valenciano I may add, was excellent. I've always liked his goalkeeping but it was difficult to find space at Valencia with Cani around. Espanyol did pass the ball around well when playing 11 vs 11 and rather than counter attacking as many suggested, it was they who controlled more of the ball then and forced Sevilla to counter. As discussed though the expulsion changed that dynamic and Sevilla soon took over but the drama kept up to the end. Nice game and as Merengue said a good advertisement for Spanish football. |
