But here is where matters are getting interesting in this year's UEFA Cup. After the draw was made Feyenoord were expelled due to crowd trouble, I believe their fans invaded the field of play, in their final group stage game in 2006. UEFA considered adding Wisla Krakow the team who finished behind Feyenoord in their group play but rejected that and instead decided to award Tottenham, who were drawn to play Feyenoord in this next round of play, a bye into the next round. So you'd think Spurs would be happy they've advanced to the second knockout round of the UEFA Cup, right? Well no they want compensation for the lost gate receipts they'd have received from playing Feyenoord. This in spite of the fact Spurs will now receive greater prize money for passing on to the second knockout round. Meanwhile Feyenoord are taking their appeal against their ban to the Council of Arbitration on Sport but I doubt that will be successful as UEFA should have the right within it's rules and regulations to suspend a club, especially a chronic offender like Feyenoord, for crowd troubles. I'd also be curious to learn what difference there would be in Tottenham's gate receipts for a game against Feyenoord and the increased prize money Spurs will receive by passing to the second round of the UEFA Cup? It's an interesting situation raised by Tottenham but I think they should be happy with the fact they'll advance in the tournament, get more prize money and will save themselves from the wear and tear of two games against Feyenoord. |

Feyenoord's appeal was denied and Tottenham move on to the next round. Meanwhile the other 30 teams left in the competition begin play this week. For me the most interesting matchups are Ajax vs Werder Bremen and Spartak Moscow vs Celta. Because their stadium has not met Italian governmental standards, Livorno will play Espanyol in an empty stadium. |

Werder Bremen really took it to Ajax, winning 3-0. Celta plays Spartak and Sevilla goes to Steaua tomorrow but two Spanish clubs got good results today. Espanyol beat Livorno in front of a closed stadium in Italy 2-1 and Osasuna went to Bordeaux and pulled out a 0-0 tie. Looks like an exciting game in Turkey between Fenerbahce and AZ. Today's UEFA results: 0 - 0 GIRONDINS B.- OSASUNA 0 - 0 CSKA MOSCÚ- MACCABI HAIFA 1 - 1 SHAKHTAR D.- NANCY 3 - 2 B. LEVERKUSEN- BLACKBURN ROV. 3 - 3 FENERBAHCE- AZ 2 - 1 HAPOEL TEL AVIV- GLASG. RANGERS 3 - 0 WERDER B.- AJAX 1 - 2 LIVORNO- ESPANYOL 0 - 2 AEK ATENAS- PSG 1 - 0 BENFICA- DINAMO BUCAR. |

(Inglaterra) 0-1 3-1 Lens (Francia)-Panathinaikos (Grecia) 0-0 AZ edges out Fenerbahce on away goals after a pair of high scoring draws, Osasuna's Iranian player Nekounam scored a veyr late goal when penalties looked inevitable to send osasuna past Bordeaux, Maccabi Haifa beating CSKA Moscow, the 2005 champions is the surprise of the round to me. Werder Bremen after their big first round win just hung on to eliminate Ajax. With Sevilla, Osasuna, Celta and Espanyol still alive Spain has 4 of the 16 teams left in the tourney. Also remember Tottenhama dvanced due to feyenoord being kicked out. |

Here are today's UEFA Cup quarterfinal first leg games with tonight's home team listed first, Newcastle (England)-AZ (Holland) - Maccabi Haifa (Israel)-Espanyol (España) - G. Rangers (Scotland)-Osasuna (España) - S. Braga (Portugal)-Tottenham (England) - Sevilla (España)-Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) - Lens (Francia)-Leverkusen (Germany) - PSG (Francia)-Benfica (Portugal) - Celta (España)-Werder Bremen (Germany) PSG-Benfica looks like a pretty interesting game as does Sevilla-Shaktar. Sevilla are now the only Spanish club left in 3 competitions: league, Cup and Europe so I'll be interested in how they handle this crowded schedule they'll have from here on till the end of the season. And Newcastle against Louis Van Gaal's AZ, the 2nd place team in Holland also has the makings of a pretty good matchup. |

Braga 2-3 Tottenham Celta 0-1 Bremen Lens 2-1 Leverkusen Rangers 1-1 Osasuna M. Haifa 0-0 Espanyol PSG 2-1 Benfica Newcastle 4-2 AZ Sevilla 2-2 Shakhtar Newcastle had quite an easy time against AZ Alkmaar and were 3-0 up after 25 minutes and later 4-1 up. Having had the chance to kill the tie, I think they'll be quite frustrated to have 'only' won 4-2 in the end, so that the tie remains alive going into next week's second leg in Holland. Spurs played brilliantly at times in Braga and were creating chances at will in the first half, but somehow didn't score. Eventually they made their breakthrough in the second half, great play from Aaron Lennon set up two goals and they led 2-0. That should have been it, but a dodgy penalty got Braga back into it before they scored a surprise late equaliser. Could have been a wasted night for Tottenham but Robbie Keane got them a winner at the end. The two French sides won 2-1 at home, but both will find it tricky to protect those leads next week IMO. I can see Leverkusen turning round their deficit at home to Lens. PSG came from behind to beat Benfica 2-1 but they're a fragile side at the best of times and I would expect Benfica to come through that one. Bad night for the four Spanish clubs. I don't know if the holders Sevilla had their strongest XI on the field, but they needed two penalties to get a score draw at home to Shakhtar. That's not a good result to be taking out to Ukraine for the return leg. Neither is a 1-0 deficit, which Celta Vigo ended up with at home to Werder Bremen. Right now, Werder look to be one of the big favourites for the competition. Their form in Germany has stalled lately but they remain very much in the running for the Bundesliga and of course knocked Ajax out in the last round of the UEFA Cup. As we've said in the Champions League thread, 0-0 away isn't really that great a result and Espanyol may be stung at home to Maccabi Haifa. However, Israeli sides don't tend to travel too well. Osasuna were very much on top against a poor Rangers, and could have put the tie beyond their Scottish opponents. As it was, Rangers were able to get an undeserved equaliser right at the end and still have a chance in the second leg. |

Sevilla had the majority of their starters against Shaktor but they were without Frederic Kanoute who has become so important in how the team functions. Should be a good 2nd leg next week in Ukraine but one thing about Sevilla is they do play well on the road. But with the team in it's first league ttile race in over 50+ years and still alive in the Copa del Rey maybe Sevilla would be better off focusing on their domestic games instead of the UEFA Cup? Osasuna let Rangers back in the game with a tired looking clearance late in the match which Rangers quickly converted into the tying goal. But I agree with Simon, Werder Bremen look to be in the best shape of all the teams heading into leg 2 although Newcastle, despite letting AZ get that late 2nd goal, also look well positioned. |

Today's results: Leverkusen 3-0 Lens Werder Bremen 2-0 Celta Osasuna 1-0 Rangers Tottenham 3-2 Braga All 4 winners today advanced to the quarterfinals, the most impressive win was Leverkusen's big win over Lens but Spurs victory over Braga, behind 2 Berbatov's goal apparently was a spirited game. Anybody here see it? I always thought Berbatov was an interesting forward. He's inconsistent but has great technique. can't say any of these results are surprising. Maybe tomrrow's games will provide some surprises? Defending champs Sevilla are in for a rough time traveling to Ukraine with a 2-2 score. |

A lot of draamtics in today's round of UEFA Cup matches, first of all the day's results: Sevilla 3 Shaktar 2 (ET) Espanyol 4 Maccabi Haifa 0 Benfica 3 PSG 1 AZ Alkmaar 2 Newcastle 0 All of the day's winners advanced to the quarterfinals. First the most dramatic result, Donetsk goes up on Sevilla through a backheeled shot by their Brasilian Matuzalem, Sevilla ties it up before the half ends, in the 2nd period Shaktar goes ahead with about 10 minutes left then in injury time Sevilla sends goalie Andres Palop up for a corner and the goalie heads in the corner kick to tie the match up at 2-2 and 4-4 after both legs! On to extra time where Javier Chevanton wins it for Sevilla in the extra period. To Holland where AZ beats Newcastle 2-0 to advance on away goals in a match where both teams had plenty of chances to make sure away goals didn't matter. To Portugal where a late Simao Sabrosa penalty gives Benfica a 3-1 victory over PSG and 4-3 overall win. Only Espanyol's easy win over Haifa lacked drama from this group of matches. |

Your right about the drama in Donetsk between Shaktar and Sevilla. Matuzalem's goal was on a scorpion kick, the first time I've seen someone do that since Rene Higuita did it in a friendly against England years ago. But this was in a UEFA Cup match and resulted in a goal! And then that was topped by goalie Palop's header in injury time to send it into extra time. An amazing game. |

High drama is the correct description for how Sevilla vs Shaktor ended. Matuzalem's great goal ended up being topped by Palop's header. Of course Sevilla probably should have put the game away before that but nevertheless what a way to tie a game up and eventually win it. Simon was right about Newcastle living to regret that late 2nd goal they gave up to AZ in the first leg as that proved crucial in the Dutch team's aggregate win on away goals. They've already done the draw for April 5 & 12 quarterfinals. These are the matchups, 1)AZ Alkmaar (NED) v Werder Bremen (GER) 2)Bayer Leverkusen (GER) v Osasuna (ESP) 3)Sevilla (ESP) v Tottenham Hotspur (ENG) 4)Espanyol (ESP) v Benfica (POR) In the semifinals the winner of match 1 plays 4 and 2 versus 3. This draw sets up some pretty good quarterfinal games though including, a Dutch vs German battle. I think Werder Bremen have an excellent chance to not only defeat AZ but win this Cup. The quarters are the farthest Osasuna have ever gone in a European competition and they are a difficult team to beat at home, I think their matchup with Leverkusen is a even one so those should be two competitive matches between them. Sevilla after escaping the Ukraine have an interesting duel with Spurs. Kanoute goes up against his old club. Spanish-English matchups have been pretty good lately in Europe and this should be no different. If the wear and tear of playing league, Cup and European matches doesn't get them Sevilla are the better team and should beat Spurs but this too should be a competitive set of games. Finally there's Benfica vs Espanyol. I'd rate the Portuguese team favorites but Espanyol are a tricky team. On their day they can beat anyone but they are also prone to drops in form. If I had to go out on a limb I'd say Werder Bremen, Benfica, Sevilla and Leverkusen will win their quarterfinals. Ideally I'd like to see a Bremen vs Sevilla final as that would provide a good contrast in styles between two pretty attractive teams to watch. The UEFA Cup won't have the glamour of the Champions League but these are some pretty good games and this is when this tournament starts to get quite competitive. |

You guys have already described the great finish to sevilla's match but that was just an amazing finish. Yes this tournament may not have the very best of Europe competing but it still can provide plenty of excitement and it is hard to beat that Sevilla-Shakhtor finish. I am not complaining about there being 3 Spanish clubs in the final 8. |

Can't believe I missed the Matuzalem goal. A scorpion kick? Really? I'll have to hunt it down on youtube. Saw Palop's header. Very neatly taken but it was a free header! What were Shakhtar doing? He may be the keeper but he still needs to be marked! Sounds like that was a great game though. I saw Spurs against Braga. Spurs were irresistable going forward at times. This last month or two they've been scoring three or four goals per game. Berbatov and Keane are a great partnership. Berbatov in particular has been a superb signing for Spurs. I would still say Sevilla are the favourites in that tie though. Spurs can beat anyone on their day but they can be fragile at the back and seem to sometimes lack the nerve to see a game out from a winning position. They were in total control of both games against Braga and yet still shipped 4 goals that could potentially have been costly. Newcastle really only have themselves to blame. 2-0 Alkmaar was probably about right in the second leg, although both sides had plenty of other chances besides. But it was at St. James's Park that the Magpies blew this one. 3-0 in 20 mins and later 4-1 up and in total control. From that kind of position you should make the second leg academic. AZ are a good side, with plenty of Dutch internationals, so their tie with Werder will be well worth watching. Espanyol-Benfica and Leverkusen-Osasuna should be good ties as well. There are plenty of good footballing sides doing well in the UEFA Cup this year and that's making it an entertaining competition. |
