Decision is up to you. If ever - I would write k_sožalenju, but nažaľ suits me. I think the difference is not because of preposition k itself. Rather because it looks unhandy. In Slovene I like : kmalu - 1. shortly, soon 2. near, right after hkrati (k > h before k, g) - simultaneously In Polish we've got gwoli = 'with the object of...' from a phrase k woli (lit. toward one's will) or an adjective grzeczny (= 'polite, kind') from an old phrase k'rzeczy (lit. 'toward the thing / the case') = (to be) suitable for use. Edited by bandziol20, Sep 20 2012, 09:17 AM.

Where do you find this kind of information? Not Vasmer's? Is there a good Polish etymology source book or website?

Please consider 3 levels of "tests" for word formulation: 1. Logical, Analytical or Commonly Slavic 2. That it "makes sense" - to the people (not just the creators) - "will the people both accept & use it?" 3. Avoid "conflicts" www.MEDŽUSLOVJANSKI.com - Grammar www.INTERSLAVIC.info - Lexicon | |

If you know Polish you can try to find some informations from scans of the Brückner's Etymological Dictionary. http://www.etymologia.org/wiki But I have to warn you that it is specific written and it's quite old (from 1926-27). However, many informations in it are still true. Besides, if would have a certain question I invite you to conlangs.fora.pl -> Lingwistyka -> Pytania o etymologię w języku polskim Cheers.

BTW, I would suggest to write "bezmala" for "almost" instead of present "bez malogo" which is clumsy and could involve improper associations.

mainly, because it's shorter. it appeared long time ago. malo = (adv.) a little; in old times these adverbs were treated as a neuter noun with -o ending, and so : bez + [malo/Gen.] = bez_mala (pl = bez mała, usb = bjezmała, sk = bezmála). Other is for example : po* + [malo/Dat.] = po_malu "slowly" (lit. "by little") *po is preposition for distribution (in old Slavic it was connected with Dat. sg., not Loc). In Croatian both are with indeclinable forms : bez-malo, po-malo. I think it would be good to distinguish this specific adverbial use ("almost") by writing together from usual, concrete use as in : bez + malogo... (let's say) konja.
