I'm not a linguist, therefore I'd like someone to explain the following part to me: "The same goes for Proto-Slavic ę, which usually becomes [jɛ̃] or [jɔ̃] in Polish, [jɛ] in Czech, [ja] in East Slavic and [ɛ] in South Slavic. If we take the most "average" pronunciation, we end up with something like [jć]. " Was the Proto-Slavic "ę" a nasal? I take it it wasn't, then where does the actual Polish nasal "ę" come from? It's equivalent in practically all other modern Slavic languages is "u", I've never seen it change into "ja" or "je" in any language. Unless of course you mean the ligature "ię" (ѩ), and that gets replaced by "ä" in Slovak, "e" in Czech and "я" seems to have persisted in the East Slavic family instead. So, where does the Polish nasal "ę" come from? Is it related to the Proto-Slavic "ę"? Edited by Xfing, Dec 2 2011, 01:16 AM.

There is a difference between Polish ę and Polish ję/ię/'ę. Same goes for ą vs. ją/ią/'ą. When they follow a hard consonant, they both derive from Proto-Slavic ǫ (NMS ų). When they follow a (historically) soft consonant, they derive from Proto-Slavic ę. Ją and ję can derive from PSl. jǫ (ѭ) or ję (ѩ). So będę matches PSl. bǫdǫ (NMS bųdų), and pięć matches pętь. The question whether the Proto-Slavic vowel becomes ę or ą in Polish not always predictable (nosjǫ > nošǫ > noszę, nosętь > noszą), but whenever it is, it is related to length - in those cases ą/ę alternate in the same way as ó/o. A vowel lengthens mostly in cases when it is followed by (a) voiced consonant(s), followed by a jer. Hence będę and boję vs. bądź and bój. |
