Dave Meinert's 60's Rockford Style Chevelle, The Land of the SignpainterA Little More Points Separation, But Title Race Still Up for Grabs After the Hoovermobile Finally Pulls Through Signpainter's 150, SNRA Race # 14, Rockford Speedway, Love's Park, IL, 1/4 mile high banked paved oval, August 27, 2016. Fast times were the rule during SNRA Qualifying in Chicagoland for the SNRA's annual stop at the historic Rockford Speedway. The weather was seasonably cool and the cars were making a lot of power. Porky Henley parlayed these things into another top qualifying spot just ahead or area native Gordy Miller's Big Boy Monte Carlo. Tonight it was Canzady Loggins turn to be the fast Lap1 racing car just ahead of the fine qualifying effort of Chip Sears in the series' lone pick- up. Last week's feature winner, Del Shemp Hoyt rounded out the top five. Title contenders led by Carl Brennecke conducted modest qualifying efforts, all ending up between 9th to 13th positions. Chipper was ultra fast but bad luck hit again! Starting Lineup Row 1 Porky Henley 8 Gordy Miller 26 Row2 Canzady Loggins 86 Chipper Sears 14 Row 3 Del Shemp Hoyt Jr. 73 Mark Kelly 25N Row 4 Frank Burval 63 Presley Loggins 17 Row 5 Carl Brennecke 1 Jason Hunter 5 Row 6 Jim Hondo Mullis 2H Kevin Sassman 95 Row 7 Dave Charlie Bayer 2 Dirtrack Dave Keim 9 Row 8 Bulldog Carman 82 Jlog Loggins 25 Row 9 Emily Cudahy 40 Spud Loggins 96 Row 10 Tim Freeman 3 Ricky Johnson 42 Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks swung his hockey stick with the green attached to start the field at 8 pm. Porky Henley and Gordy Miller were able to drop into single file in the preferred lower line and they maintained that position until lap 20. At this time, Chip and Shemp who had been waging a furious battle from their 4th and 5th starting positions. Drivers can at Rockford, and in fact the Deery family and staff used to present a trophy to drivers who did roll, but the practice quickly feel out of grace. Chip would have gotten it as he rolled after contact with Shemp. The contact turned out to be caused by Presley Loggins who had been able to work into their battle before dropping rear end coolant. This was the result of a severed line which was itself caused by Dirtrack Dave Keim dipping a wheel into the infield and breaking off a piece of his front splitter. Dave also spun and sustained some more damage. Miraculously, all returned to the race, but out of contention. Even Chip pulled back onto the track with 10 laps to go, and the crowed absolutely roared. This could be easily heard as at the time Carl Brennecke was far ahead of the field, nearly 1/3 of a lap at the time. Lefty had the car absolutely perfect so that Carl at last had just enough grip but not too much. He went from ninth to first by lap 57, was on rails, and was never headed after passing Gordy on the outside on that lap. Carl wasn't the only driver who moved ahead drastically during the race. Porky ran a very heady and steady race and was in second, a straightaway behind when last place starter Ricky Johnson pushed his Monte Carlo past into second on lap 89. For Ricky J. it was last to second!!!While he appeared to be picking up a little ground on Carl, at first, he'd used up a lot of tire getting to where he was and was nearly re-passed by Porky at the line after Carl extended his lead a good deal for his second win of the year. Other hard chargers included Tim Freeman who was on Porky's bumper at the Checkers, up from 19th. Emily Cudahy went from 17th to 7th, but the other two Ford products and title contenders, Kevin Sassman and Charlie could only muster a 13th and 14th, nearly a lap down. Uncle Verde and Titus simply couldn't get the bolts and threads to fall into place. Both Kevin and Charlie live relatively close to Rockford, and have raced and won there in the past. Carl allowed as how he had this dodged a bullet, but both Kevin and Charlie allowed as how Carl was just playing with everyone out there on this evening. Hondo was able to move ahead slightly to an eighth place, preserving his chance for a title, but falling from the top spot for the first time in six weeks due to the dominating and winning performance of Carl. The top four are still all in reach of the top spot heading into next week's season ending Western North Carolina 500, but at this point it seems down to Hondo and Carl. Nonetheless, anything can happen in 500 laps and almost 280 miles. Stay tuned! The Hoovermobile won at last, blew off the field and didn't suck! Carl showed what everyone feared was going to happen from Milwaukee on.Finishing Order 1. Carl Brennekce 1 Cutlass Surpreme 2. Ricky Johnson 42 MCSS 3. Dave Porky Henley 8 MCSS 4. Me, Lefty, can't take any credit for Carl's win. It was all Carl and Crew, I never got there until it was over. This season, I have only seen 4 races and seen the Olds run three times. Right after the 150 at I-70, I found myself standing on a street corner in Longyearbyen thumbing through a Norwegian/English Dictionary. This season Big E.R., our sponsor, had made a huge effort to keep me away from the team and crew. He feels the team has had more success because of it. The day of this race, E.R. insisted I attend a Banquet with a room full of Corporate "Suits" There were imported cigars, bottles of champagne with names I can't pronounce and bottles of wine with dates on them 10 years before I was born. After lunch I was called to the front and given a recognition award for the Bechtolsheim Industries "Imported Goat Cheese Deal of 2016". I was given a scroll naming me Official Goat Cheese Ambassador and a B.D.I. corporate tie pin. I finally got away from all this madness and jumped in the shop truck to hurry to the airport so I could make the race and time was short. Just my luck the starter destroyed itself and the shop truck was toast. Next thing I hear is a female voice ask me "Having Problems"? It was Gretchen Brennecke, Carl's wife. ![]() I told her my truck broke, my flight was in 17 minutes and it was 18 miles to the Stankwell Falls airport. I was finished. She laughed and said--Sorgen Nicht, Ich fahre einen neun-elf!!! She took me to the side, and motioned I get in a Porsche 911 with flared fenders, giant wing and fat tires. We made stank well falls airport in 7 minutes. Talk about a ride! I thought I was in the car with Mark Donohue at a road track. Should GHR ever do road racing, I'll hire that little gal. I made it to the track but only got to see the trophy presentation and help the crew load up. E. R. did it to me again!!!!!!!! |
