8 Years of the SNRA Tony Bettenhausen pushes himself up during a Midget over!Tough Luck, All or Nothing Del Hoyt Scores Another Impressive Dirt Track Win Don't Mess with Texas 100, D evil's Bowl Speedway, Mesquite, TX, 1/2 mile high banked dirt oval, August, 20, 2016. Despite a cooling trend in the Midwest, expected to last another couple of days, it was hot in Central Texas for the SNRA's annual stop in Mesquite. Chargincharlie Dave Bayer followed up his win last week with a rare pole, especially on dirt. He was followed closely by Chipper Kelly's Silverado, while Mark Kelly took the third position. Presley Loggins took the fourth fastest position and was followed by Carl Brennecke's Monte Carlo; Carl rounded out the top five. Del Shemp Hoyt Jr., who was fastest in practice, turned in a modest tenth place effort. Charlie sat on the pole, a dirt track rarity for him.Starting Grid Row 1 Dave Bayer 2 Chip Sears 14 Row 2 Mark Kelly 25N Presley Loggins 17 Row 3 Carl Brennecke 1 Dirtrack Dave Keim 9 Row 4 Tim Freeman 3 Emily Cudahy 40 Row 5 Gordon Miller 26 Del Shemp Hoyt, Jr. 73 Row 6 Frank Burval 63 Kevin Sassman 95 Row 7 Jennifer Loggins 25 Spud Loggins 96 Row 8 Jim Hondo Mullis 2H Rick Johnson 42 Row 9 Dave Porky Henley 8 Jason Hunter 5 Row 10 Chris Bulldog Carman 82 Canzady Loggins 86 Tony Romo threw out the green flag, not his back thankfully, to start the race. Chip and Charlie immediately engaged in a wild inside outside battle, which ended briefly when Mark Kelly's transmission gave up the ghost on lap 15 as he watched the battle in front of him and the caution came out for a couple of laps. Presley Loggins got into the back of Ricky just enough to knock he front suspension slightly out of alignment but hung on to finish the 100 lapper. The flagman put the green back out on lap 18 with Carl Brennecke and Dirtrack Dave Keim pushing the front two. Dave passed both Charlie and Chip on lap 25 and Carl kept trying until he started to fade slightly near the midway point. As always seems to be the case in an SNRA race though, there were some mover and shakers that had passed almost unnoticed up through the field. This week the hard chargers included Porky Henley who had started 17th, Rick Johnson from 16th and JLog Loggins from 13th. Porky took the lead from Dirtrack Dave in fact on lap 61, and deciding it was go time, Shemp Hoyt had come with him, passing Dave on lap 69, and with a high low slide job, he passed Porky who had had to come a long ways, on lap 76 for the lead. JLog got around Porky on lap 85 but was not able to catch Shemp who cruised to a 5 car length win. Porky hung on for third just ahead of Dirtrack Dave. Ricky Johnson drove a good smooth race. Ricky Johnson, in one of his better finishes of the year rounded out the top five. Chip Sears hung on for sixth ahead of championship contender Kevin Sassman in seventh. Charlie finished eighth just ahead of Gordy Miller and Carl Brennecke was 10th. Championship contender Hondo Mullis was 12th and Jason Hunter had moved up some to 14th in a smooth drive. Carl and Hondo both stated that with the changing track conditions and relative lack of yellows they just couldn't get the set-up quite right on this evening while Charlie allowed as how the team is on a tight budget this year, and the car had given all it had to give. Kevin Sassman said the team had given him a good car but it was just a little shy of perfect and no caution gave the opportunity for adjustments. Next week the series moves about 1000 miles due north to Rockford Speedway for the Signpainter's 150, in the penultimate round of the series. It was a fine race for Shemp and his second win of the year. Seems like its either 1st or 14th for this hard working team and their beautiful car.Finishing order 1. Del Shemp Hoyt, Jr. 73 Delta 88 2.
