Like Pulling a Rubber Band, Things Tighten Up Again
Nancy Bayer Memorial 200, SNRA 2016 Late Model Race # 12, LaCrosse Interstate Speedway, West Salem, Wis., 5/8 mile medium banked paved oval, August 12, 2016.

It was a beautiful evening along the Mississippi in Southwest, Wisconsin as the SNRA cars took to the famous Oktoberfest facility for the first annual Nancy Bayer Memorial. Nancy was Chargin Charlie's mom and a race lover who cherished time with her family at the famous haunts of Detjens, Reffner, Trickle, Sauter, Shear, Watson, Marzofka, Back, and Ziegler. Prime among these were the West Salem and Dells tracks. Wisconsin is asphalt short track country and the SNRA fans absolutely overran the LaCrosse County Fairgrounds for the nights festivities. Bulldog Carman took to the big oval like a fish to water and took fast time just over the lightweight Malibu of Spud Loggins. Tim Freeman took 3rd fast time with the top five being filled out by championship contender Kevin Sassman and Ms. Emily Cudahy.

Mulit-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers was on hand to flag the field off and as usual for anything he does, he did it with style and flare. Yes fans, girlfriend Olivia Munn was on hand as well and both signed autographs well past midnight along with the drivers following what was one of the great SNRA features. Bulldog Carman led off the first 40 laps at the front of the field with Kevin Sassman, Tim Freeman, and Emily dicing a short distance behind. Gordy Miller slowly was moving up after an untypically low qualifying effort along with Frank the Crank, Charlie and Carl Brennecke in the Hoovermobile. Hondo and Porky Henley remained in sight of the leaders as well. On lap 60 Emily began to turn some fairly erratic laps and on lap 90 she finally spun collecting her 3/4 of the Lap1 team. Seems she had gamely hung on with a gradually deflating left rear tire. All were able to continue ultimately with some minor repairs, but as the event occurred at nearly midrace and with an infield pit area, nearly everyone took to the pits for at least two tires. Charlie and Titus decided to stay on the track with a good set up on a familiar track with harder compound Goodyears; it was a strategy to give it all up in memory of Charlie's mom. The only other car on this strategy was Tim Freeman and when the race went green on lap 104, Tim was ahead with Charlie second. Over the next three laps Charlie gradually worked around Tim and into the lead with Tim finishing up in ninth at the race's end. Mark Kelly worked his colorful Buick into second a short time later and while he hung with Charlie for a while he began to fade ever so slightly by lap 120. Ultimately, Gordy, who was really flying got into second with Charlie about 1/3 to 1/2 straightaway ahead. On lap 130 Carl Brennecke moved into third and passed Gordy temporarily. Gordy had taken 4 tires however, while Carl changed two on the earlier yellow and the increased traction of the Olds can sometimes be hard on tires. Gordy moved back around Carl on the 141st lap with Charlie still about 10 car lengths ahead. Dirttrack Dave was getting the hang of the big oval, often visited by dirt track teams in the regular season and moved into the top 5 along with Frank, who had been lingering in sixth or seventh though most of the race after moving up early. Hondo started to threaten the top five as well having driven a very smooth and smart race.
On lap 160, Gordy started the push. Charlie had much older tires but in spite of being up front had run forward conservatively before the caution and knew the smoothest line around the track. There was very little lapping of cars and he was able to run his groove without variance. No matter how well one conserves their tires however, rubber that is 90 laps newer is going to prove an advantage. Gordy began to cut into the lead with Dirttrack Dave, Frank and Mark Kelly following a bit farther behind in a clump. On lap 187 Gordy was on Charlie's back bumper, even attempting to move him a bit by taking air off his spoiler but Charlie, while slower, was on rails. Gordy began to work the outside, first up to the right rear fender, eventually to the passenger door and on lap 196, put his nose ahead of Charlie at the stripe, but going into the number one and two turns he slid just a bit high and was back behind Charlie. He stayed there until the white flag lap when coming out of the final turn he feinted high and dove low. However he only advanced to Charlie's left rear wheel temporarily as Charlie just cleared him at the checkers for his second win and perhaps most important race of his life. Charlie had a few tears, and Titus had lots of kisses both for him and teammate Frank the Crank who took fourth just behind Dirtrack Dave. The drivers were tired, especially Charlie, after so many laps of green and his bone jarring crash of last week but a joyous feeling settled in over the crowd and teams, somehow. Charlie of course dedicated the win to his mom, but all the teams just seemed to overcome things and work especially hard throughout the whole race which was roundly appreciated by the rabid Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois area fans. Everyone also finished in a position that almost seemed designed to tighten a tight points race even further between even more drivers. What a Night! And next week its back to the dirt of the famous devil's Bowl in Mesquite, Texas. Three to go.

Posted Image At the culmination of an emotional, exhausting but joyous night. Charlie and Titus pulled through.

Dave,

Congrats sir on one heck of a determined drive, much like that of the game that Brett Favre played just after his father's passing.

I'm certain that mom was proud as always, looking down from above while also insuring that we all had a safe race.

And to bounce back from the crash the week before, you and the team proved once again that hard work and determination does pay off.

This was exactly the storybook finish that made us all smile!

Nice driving there teammate! maddr

I think that Titus pulled a Days of Thunder trick on me. The first pit stop he told me that everything was going to be just fine because he had a special matched set of tires that was put on the car! That tricky Dog! rr21
