Top Contenders in the Big One / Paves Way for Win by Another Loggins
TCM 150, SNRA Late Model Race # 11, Saugus Speedway, Hollywood, CA. 1/3 mile flat paved oval, August 6, 2016.
As the season begins to wind down, point leader Hondo Mullis decided to take a stay out of trouble, work slowly ahead approach in qualifying, with a modest 15th fast effort. Second place CharginCharlie Bayer and third place Kevin Sassman went all out and while Charlie got 6th fast, Kevin spun on his bonzai charge and ended up starting shotgun on the field. Fastest ended up being Del Hoyt Jr. With Presley Loggins to his outside. The hard luck Loggins of the year, mommy JLog started in 5th and appeared super smooth.

Posted Image The fast timer.

Kevin Sassman 95

TCM weekend host Ben Mankewicz flagged the field off at this always star studded event and Shemp Hoyt jumped out to an early lead. JLog and Charlie worked their way forward very slowly and took up second and third postions by the 40th lap. Hondo, Carl Brennecke in the Hoovermobile and Kevin Sassman also worked their way up from the back of the field and by lap 70 the leaders had become a close pack. Dirttrack Dave Keim took to the flat pavement quite well and was in a contending position with Frank the Crank Burval hanging around the front as well. The drivers engaged in some serious jockeying around for the next 20 or so laps and then on the 101st lap it happened.
Charlie had worked his way around JLog to Shemp's back bumper and when Shemp got just a touch tail happy going into the third turn he headed to the low side. Shemp didn't slide quite as high as Charlie assumed would happen however and as he came back down to diamond off the turn, Shemp and Charlie had some pretty heavy side to side contact. Charlie slid and came up the track hitting the wall head on. Hondo and Dirtrack Dave who weren't far behind had no where to go and piled in. JLog was able to drive straight between Charlie and Shemp and into the lead. Canzady couldn't find her way through but Kevin Sassman and Carl Brenneke did and Jason Hunter, next in line, was able to stop and avoid contact. The race was red flagged. Charlie was somewhat bruised up but otherwise OK as were all the other drivers but neither Hondo, Charlie, Dirttrack Dave, Canzady or Shemp were able to continue.

Posted Image Kevin missed the wreck and was on the move.

Following clean up and two caution laps the field was back off again on lap 103 with JLog ahead of Kevin Sassman and Carl Brennecke who had come a long ways on the flat track to the front. She began to pull away from this pair little by little and on the 141st lap Jason Hunter was able to slide by the pair but he could not catch the flying JLog. JLog took her first win of the season by a half straightaway ahead of Jason, Kevin, Carl and her husband Spud. Charlie and Hondo finished 19th and last respectively and will need to return to form over the last four races to fend off last week's winner, Carl Brennecke who has been surging as well as steady Kevin Sassman. Next week it is up to West Salem, Wisconsin for the memorial race for Chargin Charlie's mom Nancy, at one of her favorite tracks, the big 5/8 mile LaCrosse Interstate Speedway.

Good run for JLogg. First win since returning to the SNRA after taking off on Maternity two years ago. L.A.P.1 racing is having a great year.

roll whew, where am I? Oh yeah, back at the shop. Haven't crashed like that in years. Look at this! Titus already has a new front clip on, Fenders, hood, nosepiece, primed and ready for paint. My hats off to him!!!!!! If I did anything wrong, sorry Shemp, I think I'm paying the price .?. My head and shoulders and arms hurt.
Who'd have thought, the big one, not a Talledega, not even Milwaukee, but Saugus?!!!!! Sheesh. sm2 Well, off to work and a big thanks to my crew chief, at least we have a home race and can test this week. :)))

Dave, that's Lou Blaney of the Sharon Speedway Blaneys That pic is before my time. I started following him in the late 70s when he was driving Big Block Dirt Modifieds From what I understand he did race in New York, PA and Ohio. So you just might have pics of him. He was always #10. You might be familiar with his boys, Dale and Dave along with his Grandson Ryan! I would be interested in seeing any photos you have!
