SNRA Under the ligh....er Sunlight, Saturday Night!
Midnight Sun 100, Greater Fairbanks Raceway, Fairbanks, Alaska, July 30, 2016, 1/3 mile med. banked dirt and gravel oval. SNRA Late Model Race #10.

Believe it or not, Greater Fairbanks Raceway has hosted Sprint Cars, Modifieds and Late Model Racing among other classes since the early 80's. The fans awaited the SNRA, the first major traveling series to visit the track, with great anticipation and surely were not disappointed. What has become the first family of SNRA racing, the Loggins' and their LAP1 team led off the early, rocking and rolling action with Presley turning a great lap and taking the pole. Bulldog Carman, from Pulley Enterprises was very close behind. The oo's and ah's came out when Mark Kelly drove his beautiful patriotic Buick to third fast, followed by the well appreciated Silverado pickup of Chipper Sears. Frank the Crank Burval completed the top 5. The surface was like nothing any of the racers had ever seen and though precautions were taken to combat the fairly high gravel content in the dirt surface and there was some slipping and sliding by even the best, so Presley's effort was to be appreciated, and the sun was shining!

Posted Image Ms. P took the pole.

It was under a sort of luminescent sun that the cars took to the grid for introductions before the 10 pm. start time for the feature. Drivers and fans alike were looking forward to the action, and at 10 pm. precisely noneother than Governor Sarah Palin dropped the green. As the cars roared into the third turn on lap 2 Presley did harmlessly spin and the entire field missed her. On lap 5 the green was back out with Mark Kelly in top spot. He and Frank the Crank Burval engaged in a dirt clod and gravel slinging dual for the next 10 laps when both slid up over the cushion. Both continued but Marks toe was messed up and Frank actually had to drop out on the 25th lap with a holed radiator.
On lap 25 the green again flew and Carl Brennecke made a tremendous restart in the outside row, sliding completely by Bulldog Carman by lap 28. Dirtrack Dave Keim settled in behind him and about every 5 laps or so made an effort at a high low slide job to take the top spot. Carl, however, had begun to build a strong middle grove and hung on as lap after lap ticked off. Driving a similar groove, Spud Loggins had moved through the entire field and by lap 80, with the help of a few cautions for harmless spins by Chip Sears, Jason Hunter and Gordy Miller, all who continue, he was on Dirttrack Dave's rear bumper.

Posted Image Dirtrack Dave lived up to his name and ran up front.

Hondo Mullis and Del Hoyt Jr. where also able to rise in the standings and were in contention by the 80th lap as well. On lap 87, Spud was able to successfully get under Dirtrack Dave and press Carl. But, Carl had maintained a pretty clean clear pace for most of the race and Spud had come a long way. He got up to Carl's bumper on the 93rd lap but Carl kicked it into high gear and took the checkered flag about six car lengths ahead of Spud who just barely held off a repass by Dirtrack Dave. Del Hoyt Jr. took fourth just ahead of the hard charging point leader, Hondo Mullis. JLog finished up a fine run heading up the second five. Bulldog held onto seventh, steady Kevin Sassman came home eighth, Chargin Charlie ran an unspectacular but steady ninth to hold off a similar effort by Porky Henley. Notably, Porky was just ahead of Rick Johnson, who in spite of more than his share of bad look this year moved up nine spots.
Next week, its a loooooong trip down the left coast to Hollywood and the annual stop at historic movie star, Saugus Speedway.
