![]() NORTHLAND OILS 100 SNRA Late Model Race #8 2016. Iowa State Fairgrounds, DesMoines, Ia. 1/2 med banked dirt oval, July 16, 2016. Combine a somewhat cloudy and cooler July day with one of the nation's most famous and well groomed dirt tracks, and you get some high speeds. This notion proved to be true at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway, Saturday. Current series hot shoe Hondo Mullis took the pole position in his immaculate 91 Lumina, to no one's surprise. Tim Freeman, who has been good on dirt, ended up occupying the outside of the front row. However, the rest of the top five was not filled with drivers who would normally be considered dirt experts: Emily Cudahy, Presley Loggins and Ricky Johnson. Typical of the SNRA however, qualifying efforts didn't predict who would do well in the race. This was particularly true for the Pulley Enterprises team, who are known to be a torrid dirt track outfit. Bulldog Carmen was fair, starting 11th, but Porky Henley spun on his lap, eager to make up points lost from last week's parts manufacturer problems and started shotgun on the field. Hondo on the pole.Qualifying Row 1 Hondo Mullis 2H Tim Freeman 3 Row 2 Emily Cudahy 40 Presley Loggins 17 Row 3 Rick Johnson 42 Chipper Sears 14 Row 4 Dave Charlie Bayer 2 Gordon Miller 26 Row 5 Carl Brennecke 1 Jason Hunter 5 Row 6 Bulldog Carman 82 Frank Burval 63 Row 7 Dirtrack Dave Keim 9 Del Hoyt Jr. 73 Row 8 Canzady Loggins 86 Spud Loggins 96 Row 9 Kevin Sassman 95 Mark Kelly 25N Row 10 Jlog Loggins 25 Porky Henley 8 Somehow, the seasoned fans at Iowa suspected there was going to be some excitement in the race when they looked at the last few rows, which along with Porky also included native son, Kevin Sassman in his Mercury. They already knew what the younger fans would not have predicted. Superglue Mike had Pschology PhD candidate Chargin Charlie speak with Porky before the race. When asked later, Porky told reporters that Charlie had just told him to take it one lap, one car at a time. He said Charlie told him he couldn't win the race all at once, " just focus on winning one lap, then focus on winning the next. In the end you'll have won most of them and maybe then, the race". Hondo had no need for such advice, having run as he has the last several weeks and being the seasoned pro he is, and he was off at the green, thrown by this week's grand marshal, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz. Fast rookie Emily Cudahy hung in there just ahead of Tim Freeman. and that group, who were soon joined by Gordy Miller's Big Boy machine, controlled the first 20 laps. Hondo's only problem was that he was a little off on tires, and he began to drop back a bit as did Ricky Johnson. Emily pushed to the front and began to lead her first laps of the year. The rest of the field engaged in a lot of slicing and dicing not far behind. There were not stragglers or lapped cars to deal with. The only thing for sure as the race approached its halfway point, was that Kevin Sassman, Porky Henley and Mark Kelly were winning laps. They all entered the top 10 by lap 51. So close for Kevin and the Uncle Verde group.A tremendous cushion of dirt had built up from 55 laps of green flag racing and some jumping of the cushion was the result. Presley Loggins did so on lap 56 when she was racing side by side with Tim Freeman causing both to spin. Most of the field squeezed through, but unfortunatley, Mark Kelly and Dirttrack Dave Keim were two who did not. Contact was light but both needed to pit for rubber and some suspension repair. The green was back out on lap 60 with Emily and Gordy going at it for the lead and Carl Brennecke just behind. The three engaged in an amazing three way dice in which the lead was traded almost from lap to lap. However, on lap 72 the Iowan Kevin Sassman inside-outed the three and took the lead. The partisan fans went wild! He immediately pulled out about a car length per lap over the Emily led group until lap 79 when Porky executed a similar move up into second. One had to watch closely, but Porky was beginning to cut into Kevin's lead. By lap 90, Porky had cut into the lead by one half. On lap 98 Porky had caught Kevin tried to slide around on the outside but came up just short. Going into the third turn of the last lap Porky just nicked the cushion, and dove low. Was Porky going to pull off the perfect slide job? Not quite, BUT, he was able to come up on the inside and push his bumper about six inches past Kevin's front bumper for the win! It was a very needed win after the bad luck of last week, and teammate Bulldog Carman had a good run, up to 8th, as well. Behind Porky and Kevin in the top five were Emily, Gordy and driving a great race, Canzady Loggins came up to round out the top five. Inches behind her was Carl Brennecke. Frank the Crank was next followed by Bulldog, as noted. Del Hoyt Jr. improved from his start to ninth and the top ten was completed by Hondo, who was tired after the race. He had still managed to stay ahead of his rival, Charlie. Next week, its on to the Iron Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama, home of Loggins Lap1 racing and the next week, the long haul to Fairbanks, Alaska for the first annual Midnight Sun. Great race for Pulley Motorsports, especially the #8; worst to first!!!!!!Finishing Order of Northland Oils 100 1. Dave Porky Henley 8 MCSS 2. Kevin Sassman 95 Cougar XR7 3. Emily Cudahy 40 T-Bird 4. Congrats on the win Dave, that was a wild race. So glad to finish well in front of my home crowd, lots of celebrating afterwards even though we didn't quite pull it off. Hope you all got to sample the fresh Iowa sweet corn and the excellent State Fair food.

Great run, Dave. You had 'er hooked up to come that far...... Way to go !! Kevin had a good run as well. I picked what I thought were the right tires. Fine for qualifying, but after that caution on about lap 55, they sealed over and I couldn't go anywhere the second half of the race. See y'all in Sweet Home Alabama....... |
