Gavin Evitt Memorial 100
SNRA Late Model Race #7 Englewood Speedway, Denver, Colorado 1/3 mile shallow banked paved oval, July 11, 2016.

After some weather and power issues at the recently reopened, but sparkling Englewood Speedway the SNRA got in their program Monday night. Railbirds expected that the high downforce Hoovermobile of Carl Brennecke would be the car to beat on the relatively flat racing surface, but it was Del Hoyt Jr's Shempmobile that took the fast time honors on the night, followed closely by rookie hotshoe Emily Cudahy, Porky Henly, point leader Hondo Mullis and Tim Freeman.

Once the race began, Carl Brennecke did start to make his climb to the top. Directly behind him was Kevin Sassman in his Cougar. Chargin Chalie Bayer was losing a little ground and Del Hoyt led the first 10 laps. At this point he was passed by Porky Henley for the lead. Porky stretched his lead out to about 5 car lengths on lap 25 when his engine let go. It turned out that the manufacturer of the lifters had turned out an undetectably but defective batch and both the Pulley Racing mounts were equipped with them. Bulldog Carmen was able to make no progress and after running on 7 and then 6 cylinders, pulled out on earlier on lap 5. The Lap 1 team had also used these valve lifters and Presly Loggins had to retire on the 40th lap, while the other 3 team members were beginning to smoke at the end. The number one victim of the lifter dilemma however was the leader, Porky who blew and laid down oil on the 25th lap. Just closing in at that point were Carl Brennecke, Del Hoyt and Gordy Miller, all flying at this point. None made contact with each other or the wall but all spun, along with Emily Cudahy and had to pit for rubber. The only other car to pit at this point was Charlie, who received two rounds of wedge on the right rear from his new crew chief Titus Lafontaine. It proved to be just the right medicine.

Posted Image Kevin Sassman ran up front for Uncle Verde.

Sassman who had avoided the oil down held the lead when the green came back out on lap 36 and led 10 laps but was dueling the whole way with Hondo, who's race set up was as good as his qualifying set up. On lap 47 Hondo took the lead, but it was obvious to the more than casual fans what had happened to Charlie's T-Bird. By the 47th lap he was already up to 10th, by lap 60 he was 5th and by lap 70 he was on Hondo's rear bumper along with JLog who had come from 11th and was marching to the front the whole race. On lap 80, Lafontaine's hunch was proven to be the fact as Charlie took the lead and took his old best friend's memorial race by nearly a half straight. JLog had kept up with him for a few laps but began to drop back, then started smoking and held off Hondo, whom she had passed on lap 90, but only by a mere inch or two. So, Hondo was second, Kevin Sassman kept up for a fine 4th place and Jason Hunter rounded out the top 5.

Posted Image Chargin Charlie took his first feature in over a year, thanks to Titus.

Next week it is up to the Iowa State Fairgrounds for a little playing around in the dirt for the Northland Oils 100. Bet on the Pulley and Lap1 cars to have the best in powerplants, a pocket of money from that lifter manufacturer and to put on a heck of a show.

Yep, I've noticed Kevin. :))) And a darn nice looker too! I'm sure a few like you will hit the winners circle this year. fbr Doesn't look like it maybe, but we're down a bit this year, our first with a Ford. Mostly its just we've stayed out of trouble. Ol Titus just twisted the wrenches right this week. Got Frank up to 7th too.
Good Luck to you and everyone in the second half!
