SNRA Late Models 2016SNRA 2016 Late Model Race #6 Royston Hodges Memorial 150, Eldora Speedway, New Weston, Ohio, 1/2 mile high banked dirt oval, June 25, 2016. Jim Hondo Mullis Demonstrates the Excellence Pops Royston and Mike Hodges Brought to the Lobby and the SNRA Most tracks would have gone dry slick on a day and evening that was as hot as Saturday, June 25th, 2016, but not one with the history and track crew that Eldora has. While the engines weren't making quite the horsepower they would have on a cooler day, the grip was terrific, the drivers laid a perfect cushion, and Hondo Mullis had the perfect set up taking the pole in an SNRA record time. Ricky Johnson found Eldora to his liking and ended up next to Hondo on front row. Carl Brennekce's more conventional mount, his dirt Monte Carlo was fast too, clocking in just ahead of Mike Kelly's colorful Buik while Tim Freeman rounded out the top five. Dave Keim and Emily Cudahy both spun on their timed laps and so took up the back row. Carl was fast in the Monte too!Starting grid: Row 1 Jim Hondo Mullis 2H Ricky Johnson 42 Row 2 Carl Brennecke 1 Mike Kelley 25N Row 3 Tim Freeman 3 Canzady Loggins 86 Row 4 Kevin Sassman 95 Frank Burval 63 Row 5 Dave Bayer 2 Jason Hunter 5 Row 6 Presley Loggins 17 Chip Sears 14 Row 7 Jennifer Loggins 25 Porky Henley 8 Row 8 Bulldog Carman 82 Gordy Miller 26 Row 9 Spud Loggins 96 Del Hoyt, Jr. 73 Row 10 Emily Cudahy 40 Dave Keim 9 Grand Marshal George Snyder flagged the 150 lap memorial to founder Pops Royston and 2010 SNRA Modified Champion Mike Hodges. It immediately became obvious that Hondo had the right set up in his beautiful Lumina and he had about a 6-7 car length lead when the races only caution came out on lap 21. Mike Kelly had moved up into second but a couple of car lengths behind Canzady Loggins, Frank the Crank Burval and Carl Brennecke, all top qualifiers, crashed into the turn 4 wall after Canzady jumped the cushion. Ricky Johnson also spun into the infield and would need to align the car in the pits before returning to the track. No one was hurt, and Carl, Frank and Ricky continued some laps down. Canzady however, was finished for the evening. At the restart, two things became immediately noticable. Hondo absolutely had the track and his set up nailed, and how the heck did Dave Keim and Emily Cudahy go from the last row to 9th and 10th. When the green flew again on lap 30 the answer was clear, they too had nailed the set up, and Gordy Miller wasn't looking too shabby, either. Mark Kelly slowly dropped back from Hondo, but the aforementioned trio were sailing past others in the top 10 on the inside. On lap 70, Dirtrack Dave (it was now clear why he has this nickname) slid past Mark Kelly and into second. Dirtrack Dave turned in a super performance.Emily and Gordy had joined him in the top four by the 100th lap, but Hondo was over a straightaway in the lead. Gradually Dirtrack Dave cut into the lead and was within a couple of car lengths by lap 140. It had been a mad dash to get to this point however, and Hondo had been relatively alone the whole race except while lapping a few cars. Hondo pulled back out to about an eight car length cushion in a masterful effort. This was only the second time in memory that an SNRA race has been won by a driver leading flag to flag. Dirtrack Dave held off a closing Emily, driving her best race, and took second. Emily was third ahead of Gordy Miller and Mike Kelly brought the Buick home in fifth. JLog Loggins has had a good bit of bad luck this year but had moved from the seventh row to finish just in back of Mark in sixth. Hondo was unmatched at Eldora.Next week is a 4th of July bye for the SNRA cars before they return to the high altitudes of Colorado, at Denver's Englewood Speedway for the Gavin Evitt 100. Finishing order 1. Jim Hondo Mullis 2H Lumina 2. Dirtrack Dave Keim 9 Grand Prix 3. Emily Cudahy 40 T-Bird 4. Gordy Miller 26 MCSS 5. Mark "Ned Butts" Kelly 25N Regal 6. JLog Loggins 25 Grand Prix 7.
