Posted Image Enjoy a nice cold Schlitz on a Hot Fathers'day!

Father's Day Can Am 150, SNRA Late Model #5, Checker Flag International Raceway Park, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, 5/8 mile medium-high banked paved oval, 06-18-2016

It was an up and down day for the SNRA cars for their first international trip of the year. However the hot temperatures were one thing that didn't change from practice, through time-trials, and through the feature. This made it difficult for teams to extract that last bit of speed from the cars but the drivers and crews appreciated the lack of rain for once. Everyone got dialed in by race time, it seemed. It was only appropriate that Tim Freeman, the only Canadian in the race this year backed up last week's first win of the year with a solid pole on this Father's Day eve. Bulldog Carman had his Havoline MCSS back on the front row followed by new points leader Racin Jason Hunter, Gordy Miller's Big Boy Monte and Chip Sears' fast running pick up.

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander was grand marshal and he was not up in rotation Saturday and so he served as the race's grand Marshall. At 8:00 pm sharp he waved the green and the inside lane began to move immediately. In fact, the lane was moving so well that by lap three, Freeman and Hunter got a little over eager and headed for the same piece of ground, spinning into the wall coming off the second turn. Neither blamed the other, it was strictly one of them racing deals but both lost over 20 laps in the pits to repair damage and were not a factor. With almost the entire field needed to slide through somehow, some were lucky and some weren't in this, the only incident of the race. Both Havoline cars, Kevin Sassman, Frank the Crank, JLog Loggins and Emily Cudahy all either spun or sustained minor damage that was to hold them up to varying degrees, but remarkably, all cars did finish.
The green flew on the 15th lap with Gordy Miller taking the point and holding it for the next 25 laps until first Chargin Charlie Bayer and then Carl Brennecke in the ground effects Olds made it around. Chip Sears joined in the battle for a while but began overheating which caused him some problems for the resst of the night.

Posted Image Another almost for the exotic Lefty/Brennecke Hoovermobile.

Charlie made the best of one of his higher qualifying positions of the year; something that has been a problem for the team this season but on lap 80 after biding his time it appeared he let Carl go around him. After the race Charlie exclaimed, "Let him go around? I was flat footing it from the moment I got the lead, he was just playing with me." Meanwhile crew Chief Titus Lafontaine ran around Charlie in a circle growling and snarling, although he was wagging his tail and kissing every fan driver or crew member in sight.
But Carl knew 150 laps on one of the circuits bigger tracks in 89 degree heat wasn't going to help him get to the end of the race in his ground effects car, so he inched away from Charlie instead of leaving him in the dust.
By the 120th lap, Carl had a little over half a straight on Spud Loggins, who worked his light weight Malibu up through the pack nicely, passing Bayer a few laps before. Almost unseen however, was hard luck Mark Kelly in the beautiful Buick just behind Spud. On lap 122 he was around Spud in a flash. He had preserved his cars freshness by moving very slowly through the pack, even though he knew his package for the race was flawless from the beginning. He then unleashed every bit of his Ron Hutter horesepower, and while he did it slowly he had caught the Hoovermobile with about 5 laps to go. He feinted high, then he faked it low, or was he faking? The Hoovermobile's tires were more worn than Mark's due to the extreme amount of downforce the car produces and on the white flag lap Mark was able to clear Carl and come up in front of him. He was one car length ahead at the checkers. Both beautiful machines were guided to fine runs by their drivers. However, SNRA fans will be forced to wait at least three more weeks to see the whether the spectacular Bechtolsheim Dairy Hoovermobile will take its first win. The next race will be on dirt at Eldora and then the midseason bye occurs until the cars are back on pavement in Denver. The win was a popular one for Mark though.

Posted Image A spectacular come from behind win for Ned Butts, aka Mark Kelly!

Spud Loggins continued to pile up the points with a third place finish as did Charlie who hung on for 4th. Ricky Johnson ran a very steady race. He stayed with the leaders all day and just inched out Gordy Miller at the line for fifth with Gordy taking a sixth. Shemp Hoyt and Hondo Mullis were right behind them coming up nicely from the back of the grid.

Finishing order of Can Am 150

"Any one have some extra Whosur dirt tires?"

We don't have big sponsors this year Dave, but we have quite a few, so we have plenty of extras. We'll throw 6 extra "Hoosier daddys?" (a full set and an extra pair for the right side) in the back of the van for you, we're gonna buy a few more at the track, too.

:)))
Don't worry when you see them, they are Eldora style, so they won't have a lot of tread or siping on them (Eldora is usually an ultra smooth track, more like asphalt). You are free to monkey around with them though, get out the iron, whatever, if you feel like you need more side bite after practice.
