Tim Freeman Marks Comeback with a Big Win!
Historic Missouri 150, SNRA Late Model Race # 4, I-70 Speedway, Odessa, Mo, 1/2 mile high banked paved oval, June 11, 2016.
The heat wave that has lain heavy over the American Midwest over the last 2 days had yet to abate during practice and late afternoon time trials for the Historic Missouri 150 at the high speed I-70 oval. What that meant was some slippery conditions. For the most part this favored experienced drivers but things were unpredictable. Lefty George was having a bit of trouble getting the Carl Brennekce Hoovermobile's downforce dialed in (something the turned around for the race) and Hondo even spun on his lap. Porky Henley took the top spot and Kevin Sassman earned his best starting spot for the year, just a tick behind the flying Havoline Monte Carlo.

Posted Image #8 took the pole on a tricky track.

Starting grid:
Row 1
Dave Porky Henley #8
Kevin Sassman #95
Row 2
Del Hoyt Jr. #73
Dave Charlie Bayer #2
Row 3
Frank the Crank Burval # 63
Canzady Loggins #86
Row 4
Gordy Miller #26
Chip Sears #14
Row 5
Racin Jason Hunter #5
Jennifer JLog Loggins #25
Row 6
Spud Loggins #96
Dirtrack Dave Keim #9
Row 7
Presley Loggins #17
Tim Freeman #3
Row 8
Mark Ned Kelly #25N
Chris Bulldog Carman #82
Row 9
Rick Johnson #42
Emily Cudahy #40
Row 10
Carl Brennecke #1
Hondo Jim Mullis #2H

At 8:00 pm. the sun had dropped nearly behind the track buildings and stands and the temperature finally headed down close to the upper 70's to 80. This made a big difference for the teams race set-ups the teams had required and it was clear that Lefty had guessed right. Although Hondo began to slowly move forward, Brennecke rocketed past cars from the back row. Charlie and Canzady began to drop back but Porky Henley, Sassman, Hoyt and Burval remained near the front. Porky led most of the early laps but by lap 35 Carl Brennecke was in 10th and by the 70th lap he was on Porky's rear bumper. After seemingly riding there for about 5 laps, on the 76th lap he simply swept by into the lead.

Most SNRA races are very evenly matched with most cars finishing on the same lap but given the early heat and temperature changes, the extremely fast track was unpredictable and there were cars all around the track searching for the right groove or strategy. On lap 91 Canzady Loggins engine let go as she raced with her mother JLog on the entrance to turn one. The leader was just about ready to overtake the pair and spun in the oil but was able to stay off of the wall. He did, unfortunately, cut down a tire which he pitted to change. Other cars involved were Chip Sears, Mark Kelly and Bulldog Carman, the later two of which were unable to continue due to damage. No one was hurt, but the crowed let out an audible sigh as the gorgeous partiotically painted Buick of Kelly left on the hook.

After the race Mark assured the fans that the car would be painted and repaired prior to the next chase in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Now, speaking of Canada, the only Canuck in this year's series, Tim Freeman had been slowly moving his Grand Prix towards the front. Sidelined for the past two years due to lack of sponsorship, Tim had not remained idle, and his set-ups have been very good this year. Tonight it was close to exceptional. The green came back out on lap 102 without anybody chancing a change of tires except for Brennekce, out of necessity. Gordy Miller had slid through the earlier mess to take the lead over Kevin Sassman, Frank and Porky, but Tim was now in 5th. Brennecke repeated his aggressive move back toward the front, similar to what had happened at Milwaukee, but not quite as rapidly. Ultimately he made it back to 8th.
The rest of the story was at the front. Freeman first got Porky on the inside after patiently following him for five laps. Five laps later he was trying Frank on the high side and Frank slipped up slightly. Tim quickly dove to the bottom in turns 3 and 4 and was able to come up ahead of both. He didn't seem able to reel in Gordy's Big Boy Monte Carlo who was around four to five laps ahead. On lap 135 however, Gordy's car started to slightly, but noticeably slow. After the race the cause was found to be a slowly deflating left front tire. On lap 141 Freeman passed Gordy on the inside for the lead which he maintained over the remaining 9 laps. It was the perfect cherry on top of a very smooth comeback for the family man from Canada and well deserved. Frank the Crank also got under Gordy at the end to take second. Gordy was 3rd with Kevin Sassman bearing down on him and Porky finished 5th. One of the smoother races of the night was run by Del Shemp Hoyt, Jr. who was just behind Porky in 6th. About a half straight behind Del was steady rookie Dirtrack Dave Keim, making another smooth run and he had to be over the last few laps as he only edged Carl Brennecke for the position by about a foot. Ricky Johnson had a good run in 9th after starting 17th and Ms. Emily rounded out the top 10 after starting next to Ricky in 18th.

Hondo 'Ol Buddy, when you are dealing with a power that can change the location of where the sun sets and alter physics, you take what you get and go about your business. We have a Dairy Sponsor, we are used to being Milked.

Engineers, sheesh!

r:r

I've never been to I-70 in real life, and of course, you know, it had to be renovated and reconfigured after it reopened last year at the urging and with the help of the SNRA :))) . So Sunset behind the grandstand and press box was earlier than 8:45 or whatever it is now. :))) This isn't National Speed Sport News you know, we try to add a little color.
Your ol Pal Dave B.
P.S. and what about holding down last place? Who cares about time trials? Brennecke was in the top 10 after coming from last twice and Hondo, you nearly passed me for that lucky 13th place, back from a 4th place start! .?. sm2

Great Race there Tim. I have to thank Titus for throwing me a Bone this week....literally, I heard something rattling around on the floor pan especially when I would scrub the tires. Turns out Titus left his T Bone in the car from the BBQ we had the night before! I pull in after the race. And I say to him "hey...there is something loose inside the car" he practically knocks me over, climbs in....starts rooting around....sticks his head up with the bone in his mouth and says to me with his Scooby Doo voice "Scooby Snack" that Titus! We have sort of a Wilbur, Mr. Ed relationship if you will! rr21

Aw Shucks, Dave. I wasn't criticizing the TIME the sun went down, I was questioning the LOCATION. Heck, when a commish has the all mighty power to make the sun set in the NORTH, he has no need to understand physics or any other engineering dynamics. After all, this is your party and you can play all the games you wish, I'm just here for the popcorn and nonsense. If you want an opinion, you will have to ask my Crew Chief Mike Whittmann. I have to go to Joplin and pull some crew chief duties on some go kart racing. Next SNRA race I will be able to make will be sometime in August. Maybe by the time I get back, the sun will be shining 24hrs. a day!

Congrats to Tim and the team on one helluva run. It is always good to see a team that was once in need of sponsorship, to take home the hardware among some of the more funded teams.

Nicely done fellas!

Lefty,
Heck, I wondered where you had been so far this season, hardly a peep! .?. I missed you, glad you are back on it. We need you for this. r:r r:r r:r
Let's hope the sun shines 24 hours a day at least when we hit Fairbanks, otherwise we're in trouble, and I mean bigger than at the Russian Front! flg2
