![]() Another Course in Weather 101 SNRA Late Model Race #3 Carolina 100, Hickory Motor Speedway, Hickory, NC. 1/2 Mile Medium banked oval, June 4 and 5, 2016 Racing and weather. Rule number one is 90% of the time, as soon as the track gets dried out after a shower it starts raining again. On Saturday afternoon it rained. The Hickory crew dried the track but it had become very green. Nonetheless, rookie Emily Cudahy put her beautiful T-Bird on the pole just ahead of Racin Jason's Monte Carlo. As soon as time trials were over, it rained again for 15 minutes. The track was dried again. However, as the field was ready to take the green from Dale Jarrett the skies opened and a downpour wiped out the main event for the evening. Once Ms. Emily gets the hang of race set up, LOOK OUT!!!Starting order for Carolina 100: Row 1 Emily Cudahy #40 Racin Jason Hunter #5 Row 2 Canzady Loggins #86 Frank the Crank Burval #63 Row 3 Dirtrack Dave Keim #9 JLog Loggins #25 Row 4 Gordy Miller #26 Carl Brennecke #1 Row 5 Ricky Johnson #42 Chip Sears #14 Row 6 Del Hoyt Jr. #73 Tim Freeman #3 Row 7 Porky Henley #8 Lee Spud Loggins #96 Row 8 Bulldog Carman #82 Presley Loggins #17 Row 9 Kevin Sassman #95 Dave CC Bayer #2 Row 10 Jim Hondo Mullis #2H Ned Butts ( Mark Kelly?) #25N Raceday was partly cloudy but seemed promising. The cars were able to lay down a little rubber on the historic half mile, the American and Canadian National Anthems were played and Dale was still on had to drop the green, doing a Grand Marshall overtime shift. Emily led the first couple of laps but eventually began to drop back, victim of a track that was rapidly going from clouds to sun and was still pretty green in places. Jason Hunter then inherited the lead and held onto it for a 20 or so laps before Frank the Crank who finally had his Monte running well, slipped past for the next 10 circuits. Otherwise things remained pretty much the same as the drivers searched for the right racing groove. Then on lap 48, it rained and the red was immediately dropped with Jason back in the lead, Frank second, Carl Brenneke's Hoovermobile up to thrid and Spud who had begun to move up by lap 25, in fourth. It rained for a half an hour and when it stopped, everyone went back to work in drying the track. Track officials decided the first four laps would be run on yellow with the leader running out to test things before the green would be dropped. As soon as the cars started to roll, Bulldog Carman, Kevin Sassman, Chargin Charlie Bayer and Hondo Mullis all dove into the pits and each threw on four of their softest compound tires. No one had expected to pit in a 100 lap feature but it nearly proved the trick. Jason and Frank held back just a bit as the quartet who had pitted began to thunder up through the field. The expected charge from the Hoovermobile began again and Carl did get up to leader Spud Loggins' back bumper for a sniff of the lead on near the 75th lap. Once again, Carl was fastest for a while and hanging around the front. However, the track had gone through so many changes it was hard to know what was going to work and he soon drifted back somewhat. At lap 85 it was go time and Jason and Frank turned on the afterburners. They were back in first and second by lap 88 with Spud several car lengths back. It was just in time because the fastest of those who took on rubber on the yellow at lap 49, Bulldog Carman, was soon around Spud and Frank and at the while flag, he was on Jason's bumper. Bulldog rocketed up the outside to the front tire of Jason but dropped back a few feet at the line as Jason took the checkers. Spud hung on for third while Frank dropped to 4th. Charlie was glued to his tail to finish out the top 5 with Hondo, Tim Freeman, Carl Brennecke, Kevin Sassman and Ned Butts up from last, on Charlie's tail freight train fashion. Next week the SNRA heads to the heartland for some high banked, high speed action at I 70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. Look out for those with local knowledge like Kevin Sassman, Carl Brennecke, Del and Emily to be fast. Spud has been consistently fast this year.Finishing order of the Carolina 100: 1. Racin Jason Hunter #5 MCSS 2. Chris Bulldog Carman #82 MCSS 3. Lee Spud Loggins #96 Malibu 4. Frank the Crank Burval #63 MCSS 5. Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer #2 T-Bird 6. Jim Hondo Mullis #2H Lumina 7. Thanks everyone, do sincerely appreciate the kudos. But to be honest, I'm really surprised we got that one in. Hats off to Dave and his track officials for being patient and giving some time/consideration to us racers along with those ticket holding fans in the stands. Old faithful has surprised us so far this season, fast off the trailer once we got the cob-webs shaken off. We are still thrashing away back at the shop on the new ride, but are now hesitant given the past two race performance of old faithful. Carl's hoover-mobile/hover-craft has us concerned though, its just a matter of time before ole Lefty tweaks just enough for that one big dominating break-out race. Then all bets are off....... See everyone next week, hopefully mother nature will give us "rain check" for some dry conditions?!? Thanks again! Jason |

No need to thank me Jason! On race day its kinda out of my hands, I want to race as bad as anybody but we leave it to the track officials, and the SNRA picks its tracks very carefully.Great win there, my young crew chief picked a good strategy for me but the race was just too short at that point for the new Goodyears to do enough. Plus I completely trashed my qualifying lap, just not feeling as sharp. I'm worried about a couple of things, I think that Hoovermobile is playing possum, we know he's the fastest and is going to go on a ro ll soon. Also, this is the best field I think we've ever had. I can see that beautiful Milleracing Big Boy car flexing his muscles soon, and Kevin Sassman's Cat, it goes on an on. The Havoline cars are already proving a handful for the rest of us, Lap1 is good, when Mark Kelly rolled out the patriot mobile I almost fainted! Hoyt blew all our doors off last week, Hondo is a smart veteran with gorgeous equipment and he's ultra smooth, Emily keeps taking poles. Ricky has won before with that 42, Frank is getting a handle on our team car, and ol Dirtrack Dave is looking like a Dick Trickle type rookie of the year. Oh boy!Dave B. |

Congrats on a fine win, RJ. Good job at Ol' Hickory. Now the way I figure...... My average starting spot is 14th My average finishing spot is 6th.... I increase my finishing spot by 8 places. Soooo, if I start 8th or so, my math tells me I'd have a good shot at a win. Of course all this means exactly zilch....... r:r See y'all in Mizzourah !! |
