![]() SNRA Late Model Race #2 Memorial Day 100 Oconeechee-Orange Speedway, Hillborough, NC. 9/10 mile medium banked clay oval, Hillborough, NC. May 22, 2016 Stooge Wins Battle With Weather and the Field The tropical storm which has born down on South Carolina the last few days created a big problem for the SNRA's first trip to the big dirt oval at Hillsborough, NC. Saturday night qualifying was only half complete when a deluge roared in ended activities for the evening. Presley Loggins was the final car to take time and ended up on the outside of the 4th row while sister Canzady ended up on the pole. Chip Sears continued to prove the pickup to be fast as he was just a tick behind. The rest of the field from rows 5 through 10 drew for positions in the hopes the feature could flag off at 11:00 on Sunday the 22nd. Canzady Loggins took the pole just before the rains.Starting Line Up - Memorial Day 100 Row 1 Canzady Loggins #86 Chip Sears #14 Row 2 Dirtrack Dave Keim #9 JLog Loggins #25 Row 3 Bulldog Carman #82 Emily Cudahy #40 Row 4 Porky Henly #8 Presley Loggins #17 Row 5 Kevin Sassman #95 Jason Hunter #5 Row 6 Spud Loggins #96 Del Hoyt Jr. # 73 Row 7 Frank the Crank Burval #63 Row 8 Dave Chargincharlie Bayer #2 Ricky Johnson #42 Row 9 Tim Freeman #3 Jim Hondo Mullis #2H Row 10 Carl Brennecke #1 The Oconeechee-Orange crew proved to be one of the best dirt track grooming outfits in the country. Though there was another morning shower by noon the track was beautifully tacky, smooth and ready to go and the field roared off under the green flag of the Carolina Panther's middle linebacker Luke Kuechley. After a good 12 laps side by side battle, Chip Sears was able to take his black Silverado high to low and back up in front of Canzady Loggins' Malibu who began to drop back with a very slow leak in her left rear tire. The most obvious thing going on back in the field was that the row six starters, Spud Loggins and Del Shemp Hoyt Jr. were flying. These two cars were absolutely dialed in to the track conditions. They had passed most of the cars in front of them by lap 30 and by lap 35, the pair was up the pair had made their way up to Chip's tailgate. Many of the cars in the last few rows made good charges too, the most notable of which was that of Hondo who had started last. By lap 50, he was in the top 10. However, by that time Del and Spud had passed Chip's truck and Del began to stretch out his lead. Chip was able to hold onto Spud's Malibu but could not repass the speeding Lap1 racing entry. Hondo passed a lot of cars!Emily Cudahy who had started 6th had handling problems from the start and on lap 67 ultimately Spun collecting Frank the Crank, Gordy and Porky who were making their way forward. No one was injured but Emily was unable to continue. "I should have paid attention to Lefty's set up advice that I asked him for before the race, but no, the girls and I thought we knew better." The advice from last year's crew chief of the year certainly worked for his driver Carl Brennecke however and most notably Del Shemp Hoyt who, when the green returned on lap 75 was not challenged and took the win just before another shower hit the track. Del finished the race 1/2 straightaway ahead of Spud and Chip. Del's performance was a dominating one. Jason Hunter moved up to take 4th in the end with the hard charger of the race, Hondo Mullis, all the way up to 5th from second to last at the checkers. Dirtrack Dave Keim held a steady position throughout the whole race to take a fine 6th Charlie worked up to 7th, just nosing out the charging last place starter, Carl Brennecke. Kevin Sassman took 9th place and Tim Freeman rounded out the top 10 in his first race back in a couple of years. Next week it is on to historic Hickory Speedway, still in North Carolina when hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative and if not, the Lefty/Brennekce Hoovermobile is likely to dry things out in a hurry. Shemp, a rare, for the SNRA, runaway victor!Finish of the Memorial Day 100 1. #73 Del Shemp Hoyt Jr. Delta 88 2. #96 Lee Spud Loggins Malibu 3. #14 Chip Sears Silverado 4. #5 Racin Jason Hunter MCSS 5. #2H Jim Hondo Mullis Lumina 6. #9 Dirtrack Dave Keim Grand Prix 7. #2 Dave CC Bayer Thunderbird 8. #1 Carl Brennecke MCSS 9. #95 Kevin Sassman Cougar RX7 10. #3 Tim Freeman Grand Prix 11. #25 Jennifer JLog Loggins Grand Prix 12. #12 Canzady Loggins Malibu 13. #82 Chris Bulldog Carman MCSS 14. #17 Presley Loggins Malibu 15. #42 Ricky another Rick Johnson MCSS 16. #63 Frank the Crank Burval MCSS 17. #26 Gordon Gordy Miller MCSS 18. #8 Dave Porky Henley MCSS 19. #40 Emily Cudahy Thunderbird |

Well, this is kinda like what my helmet looked like after the race.![]() Starting in the back on that tacky track was tough. I used $25 worth of quarters too at the car wash to clean the rig up. Looking forward to a week in my home town of Charlotte seeing some folks. Staying at my buddy's shop to work on the car for Hickory. Good win for the Shemp & Lefty's crew.

Well Hondo, you weren't the only one, I ran out of tear offs even with the full windshield. That's why the rules mandated that, think how bad it would have been otherwise, the following would have been our only hope rrr on a track this damp and tacky! r:r : Ol Don White, Ernie Derr and Roger McCluskey got it right back in the day, windshield, and washer/wiper. No problems next week at Hickory I don't imagine, the Hoovermoblie will clean things up for us quite well! He just may clean up period! Dave B. |

One thing is for sure........ in Carolina (or Georgia) don't wear white to a dirt track. That ol' red clay won't come out too well, even with TIDE. Looking forward to Hickory. Been there many times. Hope they don't have to stop the race for a funeral at the cemetery outside turn 2. |

It rained the last time I was at this track; you would think I would have something in trailer for this gumbo. I may have to take my died-in-the-wool Ford engine man out behind the garage and remind him we are actually running a Chevrolet this year. Seems like my Monte-zuma's revenge just doesn't have what it needs. Then, maybe once I get back to my home track things will look up; after all we started our racing "career r:r " at Hickory, way back when. Matter of fact I saw 'Handsome' Harry Gant r oll in here one Saturday night and set a blistering new track record. The following week Ned Setzer and Jack Ingram both broke that record, but Harry came back the following week and laid it on them again. The following year Setzer and Ingram switched from 55 Chevys to 65 Chevelles; shortly after the start of the season I reported to USAF basic training .
