Milwaukee shoot Out SNRA Late Model Race #1 Schlitz 200, Wisconsin State Fair Park Speedway, West Allis, Wisconsin, 1 mile paved flat oval, May 21, 2016. Saturday afternoon and evening presented perfect weather for racing. The best looking and fastest SNRA field of all time certainly took advantage of these conditions as the ground effects fan car Olds turned out by Lefty George for new driver Carl Brennecke took the pole at a record speed for stock cars on the world's oldest motor racing facility. Veteran, but youthful driver Canzady Loggins pushed her Lap1 racing '81 Malibu to second fast time. While Brennecke took the pole by a comfortable margin, the entire field did time in within 1.75 seconds of one another. Carl Brennecke, man what a ride!Starting grid of Schlitz 200: Row 1 #1 Carl Brennecke 92 Olds Cutlass #86 Canzady Loggins 81 Chevy Malibu Row 2 #5 Racin Jason Hunter 99 Chevy Monte Carlo SS #2H Jim Hondo Mullis 91 Chevy Lumina Row 3 82 Chris Bulldog Carmen 97 Monte Carlo SS 73 Del Hoyt Jr. 87 Olds Delta 88 Row 4 #26 Gordy Miller 85 Monte Carlo SS #96 Spud Loggins 81 Malibu Row 5 #2 Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer 87 Ford T-Bird #14 Chip Sears 98 Chevy Silverado Row 6 #63 Frank the Crank Burval 99 Monte Carlo SS #40 Emily Cudahy 93 Ford T-Bird Row 7 #9 Dirtrack Dave Keim 89 Pontiac Grand Prix GT #95 Kevin Sassman 92 Mercury Cougar XR7 Row 8 #25 Jennifer JLog Loggins 89 Grand Prix GT #8 Dave Porky Henley 97 Monte Carlo SS Row 9 # 42 Ricky Johnson 99 Monte Carlo SS #17 Presley Loggins 81 Malibu With fast and veteran Milwaukee Mile drivers in the back and mid pack along with the ER's Bechtelsheim Farms noisy, wooshy Olds at the front, the SNRA field promised an interesting race. An interesting race is exactly what the fan's got. Grand Marshall Aaron Rodgers flagged off the field at 7:00 pm and two things happened immediately. First, the ground effects Olds with Brennecke at the controls headed off into his own time zone. Second, drivers like Chargin Charlie, Kevin Sassman, Presley Loggins and Porky Henley began to pick their way up through the field. At lap 25 they had reached the front of the main pack as the cars began to separate a bit, but Brennecke was nearly a straightaway ahead by the time this happened. Pit stops were scheduled to begin around lap 70 for most teams but on lap 55 the caution came out as Brennecke shredded a right rear tire and spun in turn 3. He was able to head for the pits, and the downforce being produced by his machine was dialed down a bit as he was able to head into the pits directly. Nearly the entire field pitted at this time for two or four tires and fuel. However, a number of cars remained on track. Bulldog Carmen who had been holding his own in fourth or fifth to this point assumed the lead by doing so, and Del Hoyt Jr. stayed right behind him. A fast pair, and the Porky 8 was handled with mastery and intelligence! They remained on track assuming the first two spots and Frank Burval lined up behind them by staying on track during the caution. These cars needed a caution to come soon after the field retook the green flag on lap 61 and they got it on lap 76. Unfortunately it came when Bulldog himself spun in turn 4, taking Frank, Del Hoyt, and Canzady Loggins with him. None were injured and all later returned but finished 3 to 4 laps down. Brennecke pitted again at this time for right sides and to tighten the car which had become loose as a result of the adjustments made on the previous pit stop. The green flag flew again on lap 85 with Charlie ahead closely followed by Chip Sears and Porky Henley. The latter two engaged in a side by side battle, trading second position back and forth many times. Not far behind, Gordy Miller and Presley Loggins did the same. Charlie ran up front for a while.Charlie pulled out to about a 2 to 3 second lead while Brennecke raced the trick Olds back up through the field and on lap 121 was able to pass Chargin Charlie on the outside for the lead. Brennecke increased his lead rapidly and 10 laps later was around a half straightaway ahead. Just as the field was ready to make their final pit stops beginning on lap 135 however, Brennecke spun again and this time hit the turn 4 wall crumpling the right rear fender of the Olds. Most cars had taken 4 tires on their first stop and so those same cars took 2 on this series of yellow flag stops, with Charlie, Hondo, Mullis and Sassman took 4 tires. When the green flew on lap 139 they had some ground to make up. Presley Loggins flew into the lead over Porky Henley and by lap 145, the race's only pickup driven by Chip Sears slid past him into second. As the last 50 laps ticked off, the 4 tire trio of Bayer, Miller, Hondo and Sassman made progress but not as quickly as they had thought. Henley had been saving his tires and on lap 181 he passed Presley and took a lead he would never relinquish, taking the checkers four car lengths ahead of Presley. She hung close and was being pressed by Milwaukee veteran Charlie by races end. Chip Sears hung on for a fine 4th just inches ahead of Gordy Miller. JLog came up from row 8 to take 6th with the fast closing Hondo in 7th. 8th was Emily Cudahy, driving a fine first race and Kevin Sassman and Dirtrack Dave Keim rounded out the top 10. A fast and smooth rookie. Some well earned congratulations went out to Porky who passed 15 cars on his way to the win and still preserved his car and it's tires for when they were most needed. Clearly the trick Olds of the Bechtelsheim gang is going to win races with a little more fine tuning, the rookies were solid, and the luck of several of the veterans is going to change. The 2016 SNRA season promises to be a great one.
