Presley Loggins Finishes Her Ups and Downs On an Up and Marky Hangs On for All 20 Races to Take the Title in the SNRA's Longest Season Ever! SNRA Championship Cardinal 400, SNRA Race #20. Martinsville Speedway, Martinsville, Va. 5/8 mile paperclip shaped, shallow banked oval, October 25, 2015. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and with the Green Bay Packers on their bye week and the Cubs looking forward to next year again after a few thrills a capacity crowd was on hand to watch the SNRA cars and stars finish their longest season ever. Mark W9 Desjardins Jr. was atop the points, some distance ahead of second place Kevin Sassman, third place Hondo Mullis and the fabulous Canadian Dannyboy Lynch in 4th, but none of them were statistically out of the running. What resulted was a grueling yet wild race in which all 4 took a tremendous stab at what they needed to do to win. The time trials which kicked off at 10:30 am. were marked by all 3 of the Mopar Kit Cars in the top 10 led by polesitter Chris Bulldog Carmen in the STP ride. Kevin Sassman, needing every point he could muster just missed the two point bonus for the pole and took second starting spot. Hondo and Dannyboy were also top 10 qualifiers with Marky just outside their ranks in 11th. Fast Timer Chris Bulldog Carmen, led a long time too.Qualifying 1. Bulldog Carmen #4 Dart Sport 2. Kevin Sassman #4K Nova SS 3. Gordy Miller #26 Chevelle SS 4. Dave Porky Henley #43 Dart Sport 5. Jim Hondo Mullis #2 GTO 6. Terry Beckham Jr. #1 Chevy II 7. Dannyboy Lynch #61 Falcon GT 8. Presley Loggins #29 Camaro 9. Brian Conn #01 Mustang Grande 10. Dave CC Bayer #12 Dart Swinger Bulldog Carmen led the field under the green and he and Sassman pulled out to a modest lead for the first 40 laps. Some may have felt Marky was trying to play it conservatively but it was rather obvious as the cars reached the middle of the first 100 laps that this was not so as he, Presley Loggins and Chargin Charlie Dave B. began to roar up through the top 10. At the 65th lap the three had caught Bulldog and Sassman but before things got dicey Serena Hytla brought out the caution as her radiator blew in a huge plume of steam and she was unable to continue. No one pitted at this point, but on recommencement of the green, Bulldog pulled out to another modest lead in the STP Kit Car and a short duel between Marky and Kevin was won by Marky. Everyone more or less settled in at this point with Bulldog, Mark, Kevin, Presley, Charlie and rounding out the top 5, challenged occasionally by Dannyboy, Spud Loggins and Gordy Miller. On the 131st lap Dannyboy and Terry Beckham got in a side by side duel. Kerry Ingram was having some handling difficulties eventually found to be a tire loosing pressure, got a bit out of shape and the track, there was contact and the track became filled with spinning cars. Kerry, Danny, Spud and Terry collected the wall in the #1 and #2 turns rather hard, and Amygirl Conn and Hondo somehow found their way thorugh the cars and the infield to continue, but not unscathed. Hondo sustained some radiator damage that caused him to have to make several stops for water throughout the rest of the event and Amy discovered some laps after the green came back out that she had holed a tire and collected the wall on lap 170. She later returned after some repairs to be the last car runing at the end, in 20th. The rest of the field pitted on lap 132 during the caution. The field stayed out during the Amy Conn caution and when the green flew again on lap 175 Marky, scheduled for gall bladder surgery in just a couple of weeks, got the on Bulldog and assumed the lead which he held to the 210th lap when he became the first driver to make a green flag put stop. The stop was very fast and when the field cycled through Kevin Sassman was on the point with his Nova, followed by Presley Loggins, Chargin Charlie, Mark and Gordy Miller. Unfortunately the tires put on Mark's GTO were the wrong stagger, and what was an all out effort to win the race and the championship was foiled as no more pit stops would be mandatory for anyone at this point. While not far off, the GTO just wasn't quite up to the level of the leaders and so the question became, could Marky stay within 17 positions of Sassman who was now the race leader. By the 300th lap Mark was back to 8th but up front Presley and Charlie began to press Kevin for the lead. On the 307th lap with Charlie back a few car lengths, Presley made perhaps the most veteran move of her career and entered turn 3 high, then came very low and back up, just clearing Kevin. With Presley in the lead Charlie and Kevin began a dice over the next few laps with Charlie eventually working his way around Kevin on the outside and he began to try to cut into the 5 car length lead Presley enjoyed on the by the 320th lap. Kevin S.did all he could to win the race and the title. The chief beneficiary of the pit stops nearly 100 laps before was Bill Hytla in his Chevy Laguna. A wedge adjustment had brought him from 20th up to 5th and he continued to be steadily fast. Marky lay in 9th at this point. Charlie did get up to Presley's rear bumper and tried high and low from around laps 335 to 345 but eventually became a bit loose allowing Kevin back around. Meanwhile Hytla passed Gordy Miller and on lap 150 he was around Charlie as well, who was becoming to suffer from tire wear having worked so hard to make a number of passes. Things remained with Presley first, Sassman second, Hytla third, Charlie fourth and Gordy 5th, with early race leader Bulldog Carmen close to cracking that group. On lap 380 everyone started to use up what they had left. Sassman who had worked hard in the race as well, had conserved things for a while and made the move to catch Presley which he did on lap 391. Close behind him was Bill Hytla. Sassman tried to get under Presley and at the line on lap 393 led by a nose. In turn one however both he and Presley traded a little paint and slid high with Bill Hytla sliding underneath and into the lead. Presley hung on and pulled back outside of Hytla the next lap. They were side by side until the 396th lap with Sassman right behind, but entering the front stretch she was able to pull back completely ahead. This remained the case to the white flag with Hytla and Sassman side by side just behind her. As the cars exited the final corner Hytla went low, and Sassman high but Bill could only get a nose under Presley's left rear fender as she took her second feature of the year! Kevin Sassman was third, Charlie hung onto 4th and Gordy finished out the top 5. Even the 12th required some muscle, Marky led, tried to win, and did not stroke his way into the title!Where was Marky? 12th, after a super human effort, only 9 positions behind Sassman, out of the car and on to the Champions podium for his first SNRA title. Stay tuned for Superglue Mike's final points tally, what a season. Everyone can breathe for a while! Congrats to Mark Desjardins Jr., Crew Chief Jr. Hanley and the whole crew. Congrats to Kevin Sassman on doing everything humanly possible to win the title. Congrats to all the Kit cars getting in the top 10, to Chevy's being in the top 3 and Brain Conn for bringing home the first Ford. And congrats to Presley on the race win, last twice in the year, and 2 wins in the year matured Spud's little girl a lot over the year. She will be a championship threat for many years to come. Presley grew up a lot this year and took her second feature!Final Results - SNRA Championship Cardinal 400. 1. Presley Loggins #29 77 Camaro 2. Bill Hytla #0 76 Chevelle Laguna 3. Congrats to Presley on the big season ending win! And a well deserved championship to Marky, well done! Our team came on strong in the second half of the season and made a good run at the top spot. We Are thrilled to be the runner up, this was our highest finish in the SNRA. Proud of our little race team. ![]() And of course a big thank you to Commissioner Dave for his outstanding enthusiasm and race reports. All your hard work is greatly appreciated.

The first thing out of Terry's mouth when he got out of the car was: "Am I ever glad this is over! Don't call me Lefty, I'll call you. See you boys, I'm going home!" Thanks to Marky, I got a good amount of cash from a bet. Think I will buy the crew a big steak, take a vacation and then buy myself a new hot rod. Got some plans for the Gohard shop and will deal with that later, right now, gonna help some of the locals get ready for the Drag Tour. |

I should also add Lefty George, you are the winner of this year's crew chief of the year award for your constant, tireless commenti/ I mean hard work here, and after all, your car was second in points if you put both drivers together. Many times the ol Chevy II got banged up too and you would have it back out for Terry better than ever, it was fast all year . I will be needing your address which you can PM me as you will be having an award coming from the commissioner's office. The Pops Royston Sportsmanship award for this year was also a very close battle. So many contributed with banter, support and good conversation, many contributed multiple cars to the series. We appreciate you all. But the inaugural winner of the SNRA Modified Sportsman series in 2009, the first SNRA series ever has won nary a thing since. He works hard and life has been hard at times for him I know, but he has always been here, he has volunteered the last several years as the official scorekeeper, the keeper of the points. It's a thankless job, at times tedious, but he always cheerfully fulfills his duties, even crew cheifed two cars this year that did rather well. The winner is ol Superglue Mike Pulley. Mike I will be in need of your mailing address as well. to you both from me and the whole SNRA.Dave B. Fellow Competitor and SNRA Commissioner. |

Dave, is that an award or a summons? Or do you just want the address so you can give it to those guys in the white coats? I'm a little gun-shy after the award I got from E.R. |

No Lefty, it is something you can proudly display alongside the ER trophies....or not. Tell him to keep his mitts off it, we don't want it to get bent. r:r You will have to provide your own frame though. He should spring for it.Dave B. |

Hey everyone, Sorry to be "MIA" for a while........ Life gets in the way a lot. (Too many things going on here) Congrats to all the winners this year and especially to Mark for earning the Championship trophy for the Pontiac banner !! Great job everyone. Also, great job to Dave & Mike for running the series and all your hard work. And Lefty....... looks like we'll both be regrouping for next year. Ol' Lucky has closed up shop and took my "tire money" with him. Plus, I'll be in Nashville next week to see "if" the folks at "Service Road Gulf" are gonna help out next year. Lookin' like we'll both have to go to "Plan B" for next year. Hopefully, I can get the new car done in time for the new season. Y'all take care ! |
