Lil Spud Defeats Big Spud!
Gavin Evitt Memorial Kiwi 166, 2015 SNRA Late Model Race #19, Waikaraka Raceway Park, Onehunga, Aukland, New Zealand. 1/4 Mile medium banked dirt oval Oct. 11, 2015
Point leader Mark Desjardins, Chargin Charlie Dave Bayer, and Lee Spud Loggins put on quite a show even in time trials as the SNRA made their annual trek to celebrate the life of Gavin Evitt in the land of the Kiwi. Only .004 separated the three on this beautiful springtime New Zealand day.
Posted Image Marky was the pole sitter.
The feature was flagged off on the tacky track by Rick Evitt, often times SNRA competitor and Gavin's son. Spud immediately put his Camaro into the lead leaving Marky and Charlie to duke it out for second, a battle that ultimately resulted in them dropping back throughout the race as the track came in a bit more, something that also happened to 5th place starter Amy Conn, though she did lead Spud briefly from laps 51 through 52.
Posted Image Hondo rounded out the top 10 in his beautiful Dirt Track Nova
The forward movers however, were surprisingly the pair of Hemi Plymouths, Wisdonm Mueller who was followed very closely by Lil Spud Kevin Loggins up from their 20th and 22nd place starting spots. On the 100th lap, Dannyboy Lynch who had started 6th edged past Spud for the lead and was followed by 4th place starter Trevor Kelly. Those two dueled for the lead for a number of laps but the Plymouths had entered the top 5 soon thereafter and began to pressure Spud's Camaro in 3rd place. By lap 120 Wisdonm began to stall out a bit in his march but the little Loggins made it past Papa, past Trevor Kelly five laps later and eventually around the fabulous Dannyboy on the 145th lap. He stretched out a small lead. Dannyboy hung back a little and then made a last rush starting at lap 160 but could only get up to within two car lengths at the line. Papa Spud was third behind Danny, Trevor, finally reversing some of his nagging bad luck took a strong 4th and Kerry Ingram just eeked out Wisdonm at the line for fifth. In a rarity for a long race on a short track, every car finished, doing their best to honor Gavin.

Gavin loved kids and would have been happy to see little Spud take the checkers. Its two weeks til the end in a most exciting season as the SNRA returns to Martinsville for the 400 lap championship finale on October 25th, the Cardinal 400.

So happy for Lil Spud, drove a smart race. That Plymouth was just too fast to keep up with. :)))
