Norm Nelson Belvedere Can't Be Beaten at Bettenhausen Classic, Ever!
Bettenhausen Family Memorial 200, 2015 SNRA Late Model Race #15, Illiana Motor Speedway, Schererville, Ind. 1/2 mile flat paved oval
Posted Image The view of this Plymouth that the field saw in 2015, and, 1964!

51 years ago, Norm Nelson won the innaugural Tony Bettenhausen Classic, then a USAC Stock Car division race, in his 64 Plymouth Belvedere Hemi. That car was acquired by AMB racing, restored and is being raced by Wisdonm Mueller this year. Sunday afternoon it won the this race again, a perfect 2 for 2.
The festivities opened at the historic Chicagoland oval will Dylan Kelly setting fast time in his familiar #60 dark blue 70 Chevelle. Less than 1.2 seconds covered the entire field on this absolutely gorgeous afternoon.
Dylan and fellow front row starter Lee Spud Loggins were off at the green and stayed side by side for the first 14 laps, until Dylan settled into the lead. This continued for the next 29 laps when on lap 43 when last week's winner Bill Hytla scattered his Chevy Big block all over the #3 and 4 turns. Bill spun in his own oil and went into the wall taking the two leaders with him who were not far behind. All 4 were forced to withdraw from the race but there were no injuries.
Wisdom, the 3rd place starter, was able to slide his big Plymouth around on the inside and led at the yellow. Most of the field hit the pits for the single pit stop that would be required and Wisdonm bucked a trend by taking on 4 tires and coming out 14th on the lead lap. Some of the racers had expected hotter weather and hard rubber was chosen to make the entire distance, but Wisdonm rolled the dice with a softer compound during the pit stop given the 69 to 70 degree temps.
Posted Image Hondo took a top 5.

When the green flew on lap 51 Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer was in the lead followed closely by Hondo Mullis and Terry Beckham Jr. Eventually, point leader Mark W9 Desjardins and championship contender Kevin Sassman joined the lead pack, and with a little jockeying, these 5 comprised the lead pack. Around lap 145 Wisdonm who had been moving like a hot knife through butter joined the group. Hugging the inside of the flat track he picked off each of the top 5, one car every 5 laps or so and by lap 170 he was on Charlie's rear bumper, glued to it in fact. Charlie had chosen softer tires as well but had been fighting hard to hold off the fleet group behind him and by lap 190 he slid wide and into the clutches of Wisdonm. Wisdonm took the lead and won going away by 7 to 8 car lengths. Charlie barely held second over Beckham at the line and they were just ahead of the GTOs of Hondo and Mark.
And so the Norm Nelson Plymouth was wheeled into victory lane by Wisdonm, undefeated over its races at Illiana, 51 years apart.
Next week its back south to Nashville for the run for a Chet Atkins Autographed Gretsch electric guitar.
