Royston Hodges Memorial 150
SNRA Late Model Race #16 Eldora Speedway, New Weston, Ohio, 1/2 mile high banked dirt oval, Sept 13, 2015.
A Hard Season for a Former Champ Turns Around
Sunday was a beautiful day for racing at one of the country's finest and fastest dirt facilities, Eldora, for the annual visit by the SNRA Late Models, honoring Lobby founder Ron Pops Royston and modified champ Big Mike Hodges.
Kevin Wasson had his Fairlane up to speed as he took fast time on the day followed closely by the resurgent Kevin Sassman making for an all Kevin first row.
Posted Image Fast timer Kevin Wasson
The pole sitter dropped in behind Sassman and the pair maintained this order in nose to tail fashion for much of the first half of the race. At this point Wasson's tires began to give up a little, a problem that befell several top competitors on the afternoon and point leader Marky Desjardins and Bulldog Carmen, both top 10 starters fell in behind Sassman.
Posted Image A good day for Kevin and the Uncle Verde team.
Sassman continued to stem the advances of his competitors past the 100 lap mark but it was becoming clear that the 19th place starter, former Champ Bill Hytla probably had the car to beat. He entered the top 5 on lap 106 and at lap 119 he was on Kevin Sassman's rear bumper. On lap 131 Bill was ready to make the move and made the classic high low high slide job to take the lead as the field crossed the start finish line for lap 132. Bill pulled out about a 7 to 8 car length lead which Kevin Sassman did his best to cut into within the last 10 laps, but Bill took the checkers for his first win in a hard luck year a good 2 car lengths ahead of Kevin. Mark and Bulldog held their positions for 3rd and 4th while the big Hemi of Kevin lil Spud Loggins came home 5th for his first top 5 finish. Next week its on to the Bettenhausen Family Classic at Illiana in Chicagoland, the tour's last Midwestern stop of the year.

Good win Bill, Congrats! I was called to Big ER's office again today for a meeting. I was told he had something to tell me and a gift for me. OK, I took my aspirin and Rolaids and I went. He told me the local news paper, The Daily World Guardian, wanted to do a story about him and his sponsoring Gohard Racing. He told me that since we were building a new car for next year, he was going to submit a photo and say it was me working on the chassis. This is the photo:

Then he said he had a trophy for me that he thought I should have for my wonderful work this season as crew chief. This is what he gave me:

Geeeeezzzzzz. The things a guy will put up with just to have a sponsor. What a guy! Yes sir, what a guy.

Good run for Kevin, not so much for the rest of the L.A.P.1 team. Gonna get to work for next time.

Great job Bill, congrats on the win.
Our little blue Nova was hooked for this race, hope we can keep the momentum up for the last part of the season. :)))

Congratulations to Bill Hytla on your win at Eldora......

The 01x Mustang is starting to show some wear and tear and it's driver is getting wore out as well....even though Eldora is perhaps one of my favorite tracks....the World 100...I just wasn't into this race as much as I should have been.

One of the on track strategies that Amy and myself had been working on is one of us fallow the other and block from the rear as the the front car opens up holes....she blocked flawlessly...only problem was that I could not catch up to the 3 or 4 cars that finished ahead of me to open up any holes.....and I am sure that she had to hit the binders more than once to avoid bumping me from behind.

I think we have tried everything so far Brian and we still have done nothing more than own 15th in points and finishes. I think the only thing we can do now is PUNT!! I can't blame Terry for going too slow, the front of the nova is all beat up and the rear is perfect. I think I will have to replace the 4X6 piece of oak loaded in the front bumper. ..//..

So tell us, Einstein, how does the South end of the Dart look? I bet it looks like the FRONT of the Nova. Could be the reason you been in the front all season. Terry has been up your six so much this year, the water on his knee should have quenched your thirst.
