![]() SNRA Race # 14 Rudy Werth Memorial 200, Corpus Christi Raceway, Corpus Christi, Tex. 1/4 mile medium banked paved oval, August 29, 2015. Charlie Comes Close Again in Grandad's Race, and Dylan Kelley Wins Again It was a beautiful breezy evening on the Gulf of Mexico, as the SNRA Late Model series made its annual stop at the refurbished Corpus Christi Raceway, with hometown boy Terry Labonte waiving off the feature. This race is named for Chargin Charlie's grandpa, who was a resident of nearly Rockport, Texas and the plastics engineer who invented the blister packaging that all of us buy our Hot Wheels cars and millions of other items in. Carl turned fast time with just 6.Earlier Carl da Bugman Ross surprised all but having just the right combination in his 6 Cylinder Chevelle Deluxe to win the pole by .01 over Charlie. Kevin Loggins was able to take the lead in his Hemi GTX from Charlie on lap 5 and was followed closely by Wisdonm in a second Hemi. Carl dropped back to 5th, a position he remained in for most of the race until some play in his rear end carrier final ground the ring and pinion into submission and caused a drive train fatality on the 127th lap. On lap 56, having worked his way up from near the back Dylan Kelly took the lead in his Chevelle as the tight track began to take its toll on the rubber of the heavy Hemi powered cars, and Charlie who had been conserving his new Firestones in about 6th to 8th place made a charge back toward the front around lap 100. After the caution flew for Carl, Charlie had a good restart and passed Dylan for the lead, holding the top spot until lap 161 when Dylan worked his way back around followed by Flyin' Brian Conn's Mustang. Brian and wife Amy had been gradually working their way towards the front all night. Charlie ran better than he has in many weeks.Brian briefly got past Dylan when the latter got hung up in some lapped traffic, but Dylan and Charlie worked back past him on the 175th lap. Things stayed this way until the last lap when Charlie got loose trying to work past Dylan on the outside, and Flyin' Brian just nosed himself under Charlie at the Checkers. Rounding out the top 5 were Kerry Ingram in a fine run followed by Kevin Sassman who had another good night. In the end, Dylan took another one. ...Congratulations to Dylan Kelly on your win...I had you in my sights just ran out of laps. With the bye week both teams where able to go over the cars thoroughly and it paid off. Since it had been a while since the last bye week ,there was more than the usual amount of parts and pieces that needed to be replaced. The smaller horse power engine , running a higher rear end gear combo worked well again for the Mustang...something that Amy was running earlier in the season with her car that worked well on the shorter tracks for her. Neither team had their car set up for the qualifying race, rather choosing the qualifying race to get the cars set up for the feature which was a gamble that worked out this time. I had the chance to watch Carl Ross in the time trials and was quite impressed with his ability to literally flat foot it all the way around the track ...it was fun running with him in the early part of the race before the rear end went South in his car.Even though it was tight for quite a few laps with some paint being traded, I thought that Dave (Bayer), Kerry (Ingram) and Kevin (Sassman) drove me fair in the race...had any one of us got loose it would have made for a big mess up in front....Amy hung back as she didnt want any part of the banging around that was going on in front of her. |
