![]() TCM 212 SNRA Late Model Race #12, Saugus Speedway, Hollywood, Cal. 1/3 mile flat paved oval Defending Champ Breaks Through It is always fun to hit Hollywood and a track where so many movies and TV scenes have been shot, but this year's TCM 212 was a bit toned down as the SNRA honored and remembered charter member Ricky 12 Kirkman. A standing room only crowd by the time the feature started was on hand, while capacity was reached during time trials to see Amy Girl Conn turn the fast time in her unusual Mercury Capri racer. She was close to the track record still held by Wisconsin legend Larry Detjens in his Bemco Camaro in 1980. Not far behind was last week's and two time 2015 feature winner Gordy Miller's Chevelle. The top 5 was rounded out by Porky Henley in his kit car, Ricky Johnson, and the hot Chevy II of Terry Beckham, Jr. Amygirl took her first career pole. The fast dash was a rockem, sockem torrid affair with Terry Beckham leading flag to flag but with Porky sliding underneath to come within inches of the win from 3rd. Prior to the American and Canadian National Anthems Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer's crew rolled his #12 kit car around for a silent lap in honor of Ricky Kirkman, with a checkered flag held high by crew chief Titus LaFontaine as the crowd remained in silent prayer. From the drop of the green flag by Hollywood star and race enthusiast William Fichtner, the race was one that would have brought a smile to Ricky 12's face. Amygirl led the first 50 laps, caution free except for 5 laps after Carl da Bugman Ross blew the radiator in his amazing six cylinder Chevelle on lap 13 but not without Porky's kit car virtually attached to her rear bumper. On the 51st lap he had just enough to slide through underneath and take the lead. He began to pull out to a moderate lead but not more than a straightaway. The lead pack remained tightly bunched and dicey. Gordy Miller continued his torrid pace from last week and remained in second behind Henley's kit car for most of the next hundred laps. On lap 140 however, point leader Marky Desjardins Jr. zigged and Terry Beckham Jr., in virtually his only mistake of the year, zagged and both ended up in the wall in turn 2, done for the day but uninjured. Porky Henley was dominant nearly throughout. Amy faded slightly after the green came back out, and no one had pitted for fear of giving up track position, but two other Fords had been flying up through the field after qualifying bobbles, defending SNRA Kevin Wasson in the 7 Eleven Fairlane and Dannyboy in his Falcon. By lap 180 they were in second and third respectively and were soon joined by Spud Loggins who had started 10th and achieved the spot by sliding past Gordy Miller. On lap 191 Porky slid a little high and Kevin who had a flawless racecar on the day slid underneath and cleared the little Dodge. But Porky was right back on it. He stayed glued on Kevin's bumper. On the second to last lap he got his left front fender up alongside Kevin's right rear and at the white flag was up to the passenger door. He went a bit wider, the tires just being gone, in the 1st and 2nd turns and had to settle for second about a half car length behind Kevin. Spud Loggins' Camaro was close in 4th while another former champ, the 9th spot starter Bill Hytla just passed Gordy for 5th. Next week its back towards the east to beautiful Corpus Christi Speedzone for the annual race in honor of Rudy Werth, the inventor of blister packaging which has held billions of Hot Wheels cars and Duncan Yo Yo's for purchase at stores near you. Congratulations to Kevin Wasson on your BIG win on the small track ....any more cars in the starting line up and the front row would have been on the back rows bumpers ...Amy kind of surprised herself with a pole position....she had never done a trophy dash before so I told her to just try and stay out of trouble as it is not worth tearing up a piece of equipment for a piece of plastic....save your good stuff for the feature. Though the results said transmission with the number 01x Mustang, the problem turned out to be the throw out bearing in the clutch....which I am some what mad at myself with since the usual big inch engine that we run was changed out for a quicker revving small block for this race....I didn't give the clutch any attention while I had the engine out and it cost me a race. None the less it's kind of a fun time around the racing stables now....both Amy and myself in the top 10 with Amy 1 point behind me......I have a bulls eye on my back and she has my number. |

Hondo, we might as well do that, I figure there will be enough left-----maybe------if the crews chip in. Don't think we have ever worked this hard for so little in a season. They say its not over until its over. Well, its over. With our luck, the steak they bring us will have marks on it where the Jockey was beating it. I think we will let you place the order. Have to be at a meeting with Big E monday morning. Not just me but the entire crew from Gohard racing. I am thinking that when we run by the shop, we should just keep right on running!! |

r:r Lefty, maybe we should stick to ice cream....... Yea, I know what you mean about Big E. Lucky ain't returning my calls either. Guess I shouldn't have asked for "tire money" on the message I left him. As for the points.... I keep hearing that Chevy "like a rock" song in my head. As in dropping "like a rock."

Brian, the Ford is a very good possibility for next season since our old pal Curt is at Cobra Automotive. He let me know he can hook us up with some top quality engine builders. Big E is not really our car owner, he is just our money man----or was. Right now money is kinda tight since he has bought up some dairy interests across the US. That means we will have to finance the last part of this season and we will just get one lump sum from Big E that will have to last until the end. I kinda feel like next season we will use the Oval for our paved track program and use our Bow Tie pile for dirt. Anything around the place with the Pentastar on it will be sold off as scrap metal for real parts money. Matter of fact, we have a load of scrap iron going out in the morning as soon as I can get that 70 Cuda loaded and a couple of them old 440's. Might as well get rid of that old Charger with that funny looking wing on the back too. It takes up too much space. The guy at the salvage yard said I would have to take the wing off because it won't go in the crusher with it on. Big E is kinda hard to deal with but he has deep pockets. Things will be back to normal next season and all I will have to do is listen to his Bark. We will still be pushing Moo Juice next year but I don't know what brand yet. Big E will tell us later. We won't have to put up with him for a while, he is going to Austria to visit some family and friends. |
