![]() Rose City 150, Portland Speedway, Portland, Oregon, 1/2 Mile Medium Banked Dirt Oval, August 1, 2015 Gordy's Roller Coaster Portland Speedway was another surprise for the old commissioner in reverse of the Iowa date. This time expecting a pavement race it was a surprise to find that the venerable oval had been turned into a first rate, and very racy dirt track. Perfectly groomed, it was no surprise that the Iowan, Kevin Sassman and the Uncle Verde took another pole. The top five, Kevin, Dave Porky Henley, Canzady Loggins' #51 AJ Foyt looking Camaro, Trevor Kelly and Carl's super six turned out to be the top five. ![]() Kevin had another fast time and top 5! The dash consisted of these cars in inverted fashion, and qualifying and practice had already built up a nice outer cushion. Sassman hugged that perfectly and nipped the pole sitter, Carl at the line. Porky Henly held his Kit Car in 3rd and was followed to the line by Trevor and Canzady. A blanket could have been thrown over the field. The feature was flagged off by the Oregon Duck, and Kevin Sassman bolted out to an immediate lead which grew at times to nearly a full straight. Things were calm for the first 50 laps as Kevin was putting on a clinic, unusual for the SNRA. A number of cars were moving up from mid pack quite rapidly, including an earlier feature winner, but last place winner last week, Gordy Miller. He had Spud Loggins, Bulldog Carmen and Dylan Kelly in the 70 Chevelle in tow. They became instant contenders when most of the rest of the top 5 on lap 55, Porky, Canzady, Hondo Mullis in his Nova and Trevor Kelly all slid together in a heap against the turn 3 Armco. All were able to get back into the race without losing a lap at that point through some multiple stops but were not in contention for the lead. Serena Hytla, the winner of last week spun her right torsion bar which simply wouldn't adjust, Kerry Ingram broke a spring pocket, defending Champ Kevin Sassman lost a cylinder and Presley Loggins had not one but two flats on green. All cars finished though. After the green came back out on lap 64, Kevin roared out to a lead again, but now became challenged by the oncoming group that had guessed good race set ups. By the 86th lap Gordy was in second and Spud was on his bumper only 4 car lengths in back of Kevin who was fast but losing outside tires. By the hundredth lap they had come to Kevin's bumper with Bulldog Carmen, Dylan Kelly and Wisdonm joining the lead pack. Gordy was wiling to take his time and while first Bulldog and then Dylan Kelly came up to challenge on the inside they could not clear Kevin. ![]() It looked for a long time like Sassman could hold on but he was just that fraction off on set up. On lap 140 he got a little high and Gordy who had really conserved his mount and rubber was inside and not to be denied. He took two laps and he came up to the cushion ahead of Kevin on the 142nd lap. He pulled out to a car length and then two lead over Kevin when Spud was able to also fit in low and just get by. Spud may have finally found the formula, but 5 laps was simply not enough. He could get no closer than 2 car lengths to Gordy, who after the bad luck of last week was not to be denied his second feature win of the year. Kevin Sassman hang on for a great third, Bulldog Carmen was happy to be back in the top 5 in 4th while Dylan Kelly just held off a hard charging Wisdonm in the big Mopar, by inches for 6th. Next week its flat turns and big lights as the SNRA cars make their annual appearance at Saugus Speedway for the TCM 200. Hondo old buddy, I really think we SHOULD have stayed home and gone to Monett and then on to I-44. At this point, where Gohard is in the points, missing a few races won't hurt a bit. Got Milk? yep, we do but it aint helped a durn bit. At this point, I don't even want to think about the next meeting with big E. Might as well start packing my cold weather gear right now. |

Yea, Lefty...... That sounds like it would've been a better plan. I'm sure there's a track near Oregon, Missouri Guess our cars need that "gumbo" for our set ups..... Congrats to Gordy on the win and for Kevin having a consistent blue Nova. Good job to "Double L" as well.

Hondo, there is US 36 Raceway in St. Joseph, not far from Oregon Mo. but I have never been there. There might be one closer but I am not aware of it. I got a phone call from Big E.R. It started out something like this: Me--Mr. B. what a pleasure it is to hear from you sir! Mr. B.----How is it that you get so much more pleasure out of hearing from me than I do out of hearing from you? Shut up and listen! After some interesting conversation, or should I say listening, he told me he had a hauler waiting for us when we returned. I was excited at first but then found it to be one of his "retired" truck and trailer from the fleet. It is a 1972 Kenworth K123 cabover and 40 ft trailer. Yes, he donated it to Gohard Racing but it is up to us to convert it into a hauler for use. He told me what he expected when finished and it will be a project for sure. I thanked him and told him I would bring all my skill and intelligence to bear on the project. All he said was "Well, who knows? you may be able to do the project anyway." Gee, what a guy! |

Well, Lefty..... I guess I can come there or you come here and you can take both our cars to the races. I'll split the fuel with you. Ol' Luckey said he ain't getting much exposure lately so no tire money this week....... My sprint car buddy, Derek Hagar now has his own shock and suspension parts business. Called DHR Suspension. Think he will be helpful with my set-ups for the rest of the schedule. BTW, he ran the 360 & 305 sprint races at West Memphis last night. Started and finished 1st in his 360 car. Started 23 and finished 2nd in his buddy's 305 car. Kid can hustle a winged sprint car. |

I hear ya Hondo on the exposure. I understand how ol Lucky feels. Here we have made 11 races and all over the country and nobody has ever heard of Bechtolsheim Farms, let alone can spell it. I did some math and found that if the team had won as many races as the times the drivers name was spelled wrong, we could quit now and still win the series. LOL! I figure if we can finish this gig with the car in one piece, we have done something. The Nova has been torn down and put back together so many times the bolts are worn out. As long as Big E writes the checks, we will keep going. Guess we should throw some parts at the Chevelle and see if Terry can Bulldoze his way to the front, nothing else is working. We have plenty of skins right now so if you need some for Saugus let us know. |

Congratulations to Gordy on win #2 It was good thing the track was in such great condition and stayed smooth thru out the race...this was the second week in a row that what we thought that the track was going to be turned out to be the total opposite. This week we thought it was going to be asphalt and it was a dirt track...I don't know if this is being done to test everyone's ability to make changes on the fly or what...from now on I am going to do some research on the next track that we race to make sure that it is what it is being stated as...last I checked Saugus was still asphalt. Since the track stayed smooth, Amy had no issues getting the Merc. to handle just about anywhere she wanted it to. She thought that she could have used a few more horses under the hood though. My wanna be dirt asphalt set up was o.k ... Amy was pulling away from me in the turns but I was able to catch her by the end of the chutes....I think Dave Bayer was trying to help me out a few times to get around Amy as I felt his presence a couple of times....might have to try that again with him with a better set up car on my part.
Actually the closet track to Oregon, Mo. is across the Missouri River in Atchison Ks. a smaller dirt track....US 36 (another dirt track) is just west of Cameron or East of St. Joe about 45 minutes....none of the tracks in these parts I would consider "gumbo"...this time of year they might still be some what tacky in the heats but dry slick by feature time. There used to be a small bull ring dirt track in Savannah, Mo. ...just down the road from Oregon...I think it is a parking lot for an apartment complex now |

Well Brian, you've been a good competitor and addition to the series and I'd be happy to try to push you by somebody sometime, but I try not to get involved in other families affairs! Was just trying to get around both of you, but we didn't have anything for ya this weekend, lucky to be where we were! ![]() We actually have an old Boyce Trackburner Chassied Challenger bodied big block dirt car that may be ready within the next 2 to 3 weeks so maybe then..... |
