![]() Schlitz Independence Day 250, SNRA Late Model Race # 7, Wisconsin State Fair Park Speedway (Milwuakee Mile), West Allis, Wis. 1 mile, shallow banked true Oval, July 4, 2015 Charlie Finally Takes Hometrack Race After Qualifying Disaster, Maintains Point Lead, Local Knowledge Pays Off Qualifying-- Despite the heat and humidity the SNRA cars were all in the 36 second range for the most part with Spud Loggins breaking into the 5's with a 35.96, near record speeds for Stock Cars on the oldest continually operating motor racing facility in the world. Hondo Mullins turned in a fine second in qualifying as it was expected his old GTO would be fast at the long oval. Young Kevin Logins put his Hemi in the top 5 evoking further memories while JLog made it 3 in the top 4 with her Camaro for Lap1 (Loggins) racing and Chicagoland's Gordy Miller showed his local experience with the 5th fastest lap. Dave Chargin Charlie B. who had raced many times at the historic track erupted his Arrington Small Block Mopar going into turn 3 on his qualifying lap and while he had another fully equipped bullet to throw in the engine bay, he was relegated to starting shotgun on the field. Hondo was second quick and came home 11th, a good day.The Grid Row 1 96 Spud Loggins 77 Camaro 2 Hondo Mullis 64 GTO Row 2 60K Kevin Loggins 67 GTX 24 J Log Loggins 69 Z28 Row 3 26 Gordon Miller 67 Chevelle SS 7 Kevin Wasson 65 Fairlane Row 4 4K Kevin Sassman67 Nova SS 51 Canzady Loggins 77 Camaro Row 5 52 Marky Desjardins 70 GTO 0 Bill Hytla 76 Malibu Laguna Row 6 49 Ricky Johnson 69 Torino 4T Trevor Kelley 76 Malibu Laguna Row 7 01 Brian Conn 70 Mustang Grande 29 Presly Loggins 77 Camaro Row 8 4H Serena Hytla 74 Charger 3M Wisdonm Mueller 64 Belvedere Row 9 60 Dylan Kelley 70 Chevelle SS 43 Dave Porkey Henley 76 Dart Sport Row 10 27 Carl Ross 70 Chevelle 3 Kerry Ingram 65 Nova Row 11 1 Terry Beckham Jr. 62 Chevy II 9 Amy Girl Conn 76 Capri Row 12 4 Chris Bulldog Carmen 76 Dart Sport 61 Dannboy Lynch 69 Falcon Row 13 Dave Charlie Bayer 73 Dart Swinger The Race Spud jumped off the pole in this, the crown jewel of the SNRA season to lead the first 21 laps at which time he began to fade slightly. From the change of humidity into the evening he had some carburetor jetting problems he just couldn't solve on the evening and slowly drifted back. Jim Hondo Mullis then pushed his GTO to the front and held the lead until lap 78 when the second place Gordon Miller lost a piston and blew his big block Chevy spectacularly at the end of the front straight. Presely Loggins got caught up in the oil and collected the outside wall in turns one and two. Charlie had gained only one spot on the struggling Dannyboy who was still just having troubles with his Cleveland it seemed, ultimately succumbing later in the race to a defective cracked distributor rotor. Under caution, Charlie conferred with Crew Chief Titus LaFontaine who in the pre-race engine swap thrash had neglected to check tire pressures and had sent out his driver on left sides inflated to 28 psi. Charlie felt the problem, roared back out of the pit and came back to have Titus install left sides inflated to, well let's say a significantly lower psi, as required by the long flat turns. By making the two quick stops he did not lose a lap. Previous to this caution Dr. Kerry Ingram of Milwaukee as well as Terry Beckham and Bulldog Carmen in his kit car moved rapidly forward to 5th and 6th from their 20th and 21st place starting positions. They continued forward on lap 85 when the green came back out but Charlie now had the measure of the set up for the flat track. The race continued under green and final pit stops began on lap 165 through lap 175. Charlie ,who had moved up to 5th by this time, now took the lead ahead of Bulldog, Beckham, Ingram and Bill Hytla who had been having a nice race, hanging in the top 10 all day, likewise for Marky Desjardins Jr. Bulldog ran a fine raceOn lap 210 it was becoming clear Charlie was stretching the point on fuel and then the 3rd caution he had been betting on came out when JLog became the 3rd engine casualty following Gordy Miller and Dannyboy. The caution came out as Charlie was entering the 3rd turn and he came straight into the pits. While a few cars took on outside tires Charlie took on all 4 per Titus's strategy while the car was being fueled, just enough to make it to the end. On lap 213, Kerry Ingram got a good restart over Bulldog's kit car and held a narrow lead. Charlie who was restarting 12th had the perfect set up now and everyone soon knew it; 4 new tires and a light load of fuel. By lap 220 he was up to 7th, by lap 230 4th and by lap 239 he was on the tail of the dueling Ingram and Bulldog. On the 242nd lap he went high to low, under both, Bulldog gave way on the outside, he had room under Kerry and the little Kit Car carried Charlie to his first late model win in nearly 2 years. Kerry held Bulldog off by inches for 2nd, with charging Terry Beckman Jr. hurtling accross the line in 4th ahead of former Champ Bill Hytla. The impressive Mark Desjardins Jr. came home 6th ahead of Serena Hytla's Hemi Charger, Dylan Kelly's Chevelle, Amy Conn in 9th up from 22nd, and the third kit car, that of Porkey Henley, rounded out the top 10. The sun shined on Charlie's and Titus's tails on this day. Charlie praised his good luck and the efforts of his rookie crew chief, knowing luck in the SNRA can be short lived, just saying its a lot better to count your blessings instead of your problems. He declared how fun it is to run against all his fellow drivers, admitting to feeling at times he's losing a little to the young guns lately. But he and Kerry's hometown knowledge paid off on this day with the City of West Allis' fireworks going off just after the checkers. "We were lucky," Charlie said, but said he felt Brutus was right there with him, helping Titus to urge him on and helping to turn the wrenches. Next it is on to another historic Midwest track, the home of the nationals, the ultra quick Rockford Speedway. Feature Results 1. Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer 12 73 Dart Swinger 2. everybody. It's been our best year ever, but the loss of the motor hurt. We haven't any big money sponsorship this year, its going to be hard to keep it up. Fingers crossed.Dave B. |

Crossed fingers my eye! The way you draw cards and dice you should quit racing and go to Vegas. If you do, call me, I'm going with you!!

Ordinarily I am insane, but I do have lucid moments where I am merely stupid. I never TRY to hit another car. But when I do I make sure its a Prius. | |

Ha Ha Lefty George. r:r Not been typical of my life, I'll tell ya that. Til now just like Grandpa and ol Archie Campbell used to say, "if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all..." I know it can't last, but between Lafontaine and me, we made all the right decisions on Saturday! ![]() We've raced hundreds of times at Rock Ridge, er, I mean Rockford, but I can almost see the other shoe dropping there, we were on our roof once there, years ago! Nice run, Chargin' Charlie. Back to the front rrr I thought we were looking good in qualifying, but that asphalt, concrete, asphalt, concrete got to me after about 150 laps. I didn't know whether to gas it up or brake....... r:r I'll definitely have to fly in some Southern cookin' before we get done with the "Northern Tour." |
