![]() Historic Missouri 200, SNRA Late Model Race #6, I-70 Speedway, Odessa, Mo. 1/2 mile High Speed Banked Oval, June 20, 2015 Brian Conn Brings Home the Bacon Against Some Stiff Local Talent The day before Fathers Day 2015 brought out a capacity crowd of dads and their families for the long awaited first race in the resurrection of Historic I-70 Speedway in Odessa. Mark Kelley had the boys even more dialed in in qualifying than before with Dylan on the pole and Trevor just outside in the first two positions. Third, in a great qualifying position was Marky Desjardins, 5th cousin of the noted defenseman of the same name on the recently crowned Stanley Cup winning champion Chicago Blackhawks. The top 5 was rounded out by steady Dr. Kerry Ingram in his little Nova and the amazing Serena Hytla in her Charger. In the top 10 were local boys Kevin Sassman and Terry Beckham, Jr. with Brian Conn recording the 19th quick spot. In that his lap was marked by a near spin, the promise of coming speed was there. Point Leader Chargin Charlie Bayer spun and started shotgun on the field. Fast Timer Dylan KellyStarting Grid Row 1 Dylan Kelly 60 Trevor Kelly 4T Row 2 Mark Desjardin Jr. 52 Kerry Ingram 3 Row 3 Serena Hytla 4H Canzady Loggins 51 Row 4 Kevin Loggins 60 K Kevin Sassman 4K Row 5 Dannyboy Lynch 61 Terry Beckham Jr. 1 Row 6 Jennifer JLog Loggins 24 Ricky Johnson 49 Row 7 Chris Bulldog Carmen 4 Dave Porky Henley 43 Row 8 Hondo Mullis 2 Carl da Bugman Ross 27 Row 9 Amy Conn 9 Wisdonm Mueller 3M Row 10 Brian Conn 01 Kevin Wasson 7 Row 11 Bill Hytla 0 Gordon Miller 26 Row 12 Spud Loggins 96 Presley Loggins 29 Row 13 Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer 12 Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid flagged off the feature and the Kelly boys roared off in an excellent job or holding serve in a relatively uneventful first 60 laps. Not that the fans weren't entertained with the show the Kellys put on, trading places and swapping a little paint during many of those laps, with Marky lurking behind in his GTO ready to pounce had either made a mistake. Meanwhile JLog Loggins and husband Spud were moving forward rapidly. Spud actually moved ahead of JLog as they came forward on the long green flag stretch to start the race. On lap 62 Spud ran hot into turn one and passed Mark on the inside but slid high into the left rear quarter of Dylan Kelly who was in second behind his brother at this point and both of them as well as JLog slid into each other and into the wall at the exit of turn 2. No one was hurt but all three were knocked out of the race. Many drivers pitted for 2 outside tires on this caution, but Carl Ross who was getting excellent tire wear in his 6 cylinder Chevelle stayed out and inherited the lead when the green returned on lap 71, ahead of Serena Hytla who also stayed out in her 74 Charger. These two actually pulled away from the field a bit with the Bugman maintaining a slim lead over Serena until the 125th lap. Dannyboy who had executed a great pit stop was able to work forward by this point and pushed his Falcon ahead of the pair at this point. Young Kevin Loggins had also run a very steady race from his 7th place start and kept careful watch on the leaders in 4th for most of the reset of the race, in his Hemi GTX. On the lap 62 caution only 2 cars took on 4 tires, Charlie and the fast Brian Conn and while it proved to be a good move for both, Charlie moving up from 21st to 12th where he eventually finished, Brian Conn really accomplished the most as he accomplished a slight wedge adjustment. He was really honking and by the 145th lap he broke past Carl and Serena into 2nd and the race was on. Trevor Kelley also moved back forward as did Terry Beckham Jr. and Mark Desjardins Jr. Marky ran a good race.Close battles occurred throughout the pack as the seasoned fans were well aware of but ultimately all attention was on Dannyboy in the lead with fellow Ford driver Conn shaving a fraction of a second off his 3 second lead every lap and by lap 185 Brian was on Danny's bumper. Local driver Terry Beckham also moved up and was in third by this time but could make only a small dent into the lead of the flying Fords. On lap 190 Brian moved to the outside of Dannyboy and hey raced dead even, side by side for the next 5 laps. At this point, Brian eased back and dove hard to the inside of Danny who had given him room on lap 196. There was some incidental contact but Brian gunned the Mustang off the bottom turn after turn with Danny keeping abreast as they entered the turns. The white flag lap was the same and Brian was able to inch his bumper about 6 inches ahead of Danny's at the line. Beckham tried to follow Brian at the on his lap 196 move but slid a bit high coming out of the turn into the marbles and the steady Carl and Serena were able to get back underneath to just barely hold him off in 3rd and 4th. Terry was 5th a few car lengths ahead of Kevin Loggins who held off Trevor Kelly who just couldn't quite make his way back up to the point after the pit stops. Mark Desjardins held onto 8th in another fine run with Kevin Wasson 9th. Rounding out the top 10 was Wisdonm , coming from 18th in a fine drive to make it three Hemis in the top 10. After a bye week, the crown Jewel of the SNRA schedule, the Schlitz 250 will be run at the famous Mile and Wisconsin State Fair Park in Milwaukee, the oldest continuing motor racing facility in the whole wide world! I have a feeling a lot of thrashing and posturing is going to happen over the next two weeks. ![]() Brian Conn - SNRA feature winner in only his 6th try! Finish of the I 70 Historic Missouri 200 1. Great race Brian, glad to see you bring that mighty FORD into first place flg2. Now I got to figure what happened to my FORD, qualified 12th and finished 17th; that is the wrong direction.

Way to fly Brian!!!!!! You and that 'Stang reminded us of Trickle and how he pounded us in '73. We finished in the same spot we did then!!! All that was missing was a Jegs Camaro pushing us around. I think I just picked the wrong tires. Terry had plenty of go just couldn't get it on the ground. He said he had to drive like he was walking on eggs. We all had a blast but I am a little sore from the tumble I took playing with the go karts. Now the fun really starts, I have to go see Big E.R. in his office. I hope he don't hand me a ticket to Minsk, but with a 5th at I-70, I figure it will just be a little yelling. |

Hey Brian, What tires were you on and what compound? The Gohard crew would like to know. I picked the Hoosier S800 and I missed it. Grip was ok in the turns but nothing there under hard acceleration. Terry said he couldn't "Stand on it hard" but could ease into it. Other than that it went where he aimed it. Think we might go play at Wisconsin Dells, might as well come with us. |

WOW what a ride!! Thank you everyone!!!....I'm stoked....I-70 is not an easy track to figure out let alone win on. The last time that I was at I-70 would have been 1987 when it was dirt and it surprised me how much of the dirt theories worked on the asphalt as well. With I-70 if the momentum of the car takes you up into the high groove, you run high groove...which I did for the most part and it worked. I got kind of worried with the qualify race with all of those hot shoes placing ahead of me...anyone of them had the potential to win this race....I definitely had my work cut out for me. I got real lucky with the pit stop for 4 tires and a few turns on the weight jacks...I just run 2 weight jacks up front which makes thing easier and quicker for the pit crew. Running those laps towards the end with Dannyboy Lynch was fun...he's a good, clean driver so I didn't have to worry too much about getting drove dirty. I figured after the last race would be a real good time to go over every nut and bolt on the car. The pit crew, Billy "the stroke" Squirrel and Hugh Midity deserve all of the credit....they had the car set up the best its been all season. They found a bent spindle on the Right front which explains a lot of the problems I have been having lately. We got the big engine back in the car and Hugh Midity was able to put the super tune on it to get every thing out of it that he could.
Check the car over completely , like we did, after every race...I have no idea how that spindle got bent, but it did.....replacing it made a huge difference. .....Yea that impresses me as well....I-70 is a big engine track for sure and it likes to eat them as well....from what I could tell before getting around you, it seems that you had plenty of power coming off of the turns as you where pulling away from the cars behind you...I had to flat foot it a little more than I liked in the turns when I was 1-2 cars behind you. That 6 maybe the ticket to win at Saugus.....I know we will be running a smaller engine for that race.
I went with a Good Year/ McCreary combo.....since the car is heavy and it was so hot air temp. wise I went with a hard compound Good Year on the RR , a med.- hard compound McCreary on the LR and started the race with med. compound Good Years on the front and finished with Med. McCrearys...ran about 2 1/2" stagger front to rear. I'll have to take a rain check on the Dells this time....already sent my entry fee money in on a couple of dirt races that I'll be racing the modified in. |

Brian, that's the way to do it. Preparation and doing all you can to get things right is just the ticket. Maybe most of all, your head won this one, you were really thinking great job and thanks for sharing. Carl has had great ideas too with the 6 banger. He can run cooler, can skip pit stops often, and doesn't have to finesse things so much, therefore being just able to concentrate on driving smooth. I've never raced at I 70 before, but me and my young Crew Chief Mr. Lafontaine I think did well. We weren't at our best, no baseline, but things will be better next year. In spite of the point lead we haven't been spectacular and messing with tire pressure, wedge, switching the center on certain weekends, even camber and caster, in a systematic way has kept us from hitting the bullseye. We know Milwaukee though, and if we have the power, well I know we aren't gonna get beat in those flat turns. This was a good race for everyone though, I was impressed, as tricky as this track was, there wasn't much between first and last, we were as evenly matched a field as I've seen, so no one should worry too much! Lefty George, I grew up at the Dells Motor Speedway, now Dells Raceway Park. Dave Gasser, the man who designed and constructed the surface was a genius. I will join you this week and Wisdonm will if hes not judging a BBQ contest in Texas or something, he's licensed you know, real bonafied man! r:r For all of you, I'll share too, getting the car to handle on the outside is THE key, its where Trickle, Reffner, Sauter, Detjens, Shear, Marzofka and all the greats did it, the one that was best on the outside could win without having to touch anyone even. Dave B. |

Brian, 2 1/2 inches of stagger!!!!!??????? At I-70?? And on the front too??? Whatever makes your barge float my man. We might try that------on a 1/8 dirt track. I did use the same compound tire, just a different brand. Might have been my 5:68 gear choice. Terry said the rpm was around 7200 if he was easy and it was getting close to 8 if he stomped it. He re set the tach before he came in so I gotta go with what he is telling me. Guess I better have ol Jones look this engine over good before we run it again. I don't blame you, If I hit the right combo I aint gonna tell the truth either!! And Dave, BBQ and Wisdonm? r:r r:r r:r r:r |

YIKES!!!! NO ...little bit less then 2 1/2" difference between RR and LF tire height...something that seemed to work o.k from the dirt days there.....keep in mind they simply dumped dirt on top of the existing asphalt surface back in '81...that amount af stagger requires less effort to steer since the car practically turns itself thru the turns...and with no power steering I need all the help I can get. Jones has a dyno and I think a flow bench......I honestly think that they know their Chevy's better than they do the Ford's....they build a wicked 377 SBC |

If I understand you right Brian, you ran a short tire on the LF and a tall tire on the RR. Correct? Seems that just adds a lot of wedge in the car. Hey, if it feels good, do it. You should really thnk about power steering in that thing, and get the ratio down to around 8:1, you would love it. Its back on the scales for us and getting ready for the "Mile". You can bet your Sweet Bippy I won't pick a 5:68 gear there! Think I will try a 4:55 final and work from there. That also depends on the tire I pick. Good luck there and your dirt programs. We're going to the Dell's and see if we can put a tire mark on something Lee Iacocca built in the 70's. I kinda like that Larry Shinoda stuff better. Ovals and Bow Ties, they are the same color. |

I just left a meeting with our sponsor, Big E.R. I'm still here and won't be going East. E.R. asked me; "Well Einstein, you finished Fifth, would you like to explain that to me? And where is this secret weapon Chevelle I have been hearing about? You would think with the generous allowance you get from Bechtolsheim Farms, it would be on the track by now and winning!" Well, you gotta know E.R. He is one of those guys that took two cows and turned it into a huge dairy industry. He KNOWS cows, moo juice and butter an all but he don't know squat about cars. He thinks I can take three junk cars and a couple turd motors from a pickup and one of his old milk trucks and win Daytona. I was there with his secretary and his accountant. The last thing he said was "Sie Sitzen, Sie Bleben, und Sie Raus! That last part was for me. What a guy!

....I-70 is the only track on the schedule that I am familiar with BUT..... my familiarity is with it when it was dirt....I knew that high groove was bad fast and if you could get a car to stick, you where going somewhere....The NDRA late models (wedge era-mid 80's) ran more tire stagger than I did last week end, so I figured that if I backed it down some I would be in the ball park. Hugh Midity played around with tire pressures .....with the hot temps. last week end (around 100 degrees) we did not want to take any chances on trying to guess at things......I got the tire stagger where I liked it and the crew did the rest. Since I run leafs in the rear, all of the chassis wedge adjustments during race weekend are done off of the front weight jacks...which makes things simpler.....case in point, the pit stop for 4 tires and a quick wedge adjustment which made all of the difference on the world....I didn't have the front end screwed down much to start the race. I could make some adjustments off of the rear if I absolutely had to , but it is a major pain in the back side and it takes a while. For me, tire stagger = chassis wedge is the easiest way verses less stagger and having to jack a bunch of weight around. Amy's crew tried a different set up with less stagger on a coil spring rear car w/ jacks in all four corners...the higher she went in the middle groove in the turns the more it pushed so she ran low - mid groove ...did great great coming out of turns 2 and 4 but she had to back off of the foot feed way before she should of going into 1 and 3 Tell Big E.R that a top 5 at I-70 is no easy task and not to worry about things that he does'nt quite understand. |

LOL! Nobody TELLS Big E. R. anything. You suggest and do that very carefully. As long as I can get E.R. to write checks, all I will tell him is "Yes Sir" and take the beating. He's really a pretty good guy---when you don't have to talk to him. He's a little jumpy right now, he just unloaded a bundle of $$$ and took on some diaries with the Formost Brand. Guess next year one of the cars will be orange and white. Do your part and drink your Moo Juice and help us out a little! |

LOL!! You are correct Chargin', 'Ol Cigar Chompin' Lee didn't arrive until later, '79 I think. If you go that route, you should choose a Aries, Reliant or K-Car. Now us racers LOVE to needle the competition and their brand but in all honesty, I found the "Kit Cars" very interesting. I have often wondered what the racing world would have been like if the Oval and Bow Tie brands had come up with the same concept with the Camaro-Chevelle and Mustang-Torino. There is no telling what the Mopar guys would have if there had been no oil crisis and Lynn Townsend had stayed on. Racing is kinda like playing cards. Enjoy your success because at some point, you, sir will draw a crappy hand. I wouldn't bet the farm in one pot, you may end up living in the Projects! r:r r:r |

LOL And believe me, I've been at this game for over 40 years now, I know its easier to go from first to worst than it is to gain a position or two. I could make some adjustments off of the rear if I absolutely had to , but it is a major pain in the back side and it takes a while.
