![]() Tri State 100, SNRA Late Model Race #5, Peoria Speedway, Peoria, Ill. 1/4 mile high banked clay oval, June 14, 2015. As Nascar battled the raindrops at Michigan, a very nice tacky surface was packed in at Peoria Sunday afternoon as the clay surface absorbed all the rain of Saturday. Cells of rain and Thunderstorms still threatened the area, but it didn't stop a capacity crowd to pack back in to Peoria Speedways stands after a bit of tailgaiting. In their own backyard, Lefty and the boys knew the setups and enjoyed a successful day indeed, beginning with Terry Beckham Jr. taking the pole in the Bechtolsheim Farms 62 Chevy II. Wisdonm Mueller and the AMB crew found some speed for the big Hemi as he put the fromer Norm Nelson Belvedere on the outside of the front row. Papa Kevin had his boys well set up for qualifying as Trevor and Dylan took the 3rd and 4th spots, Spud Loggins rounding out the top 5. The Dash was eliminated from the program in hopes of getting in the full feature, and this proved successful as we were soon to see. Terry Beckham Jr. was fast all day.Qualifying results Row 1 Terry Beckham Jr. #1 Wisdonm Mueller #3M Row 2 Trevor Kelly #4T Dylan Kelly #90 Row 3 Spud Loggins #96 Carl da Bugman Ross #27 Row 4 Bill Hytla #9H JLog Loggins #24 Row 5 Hondo Mullis #92 Dannyboy Lynch #61 Row 6 Canzady Loggins #51 Gordy Miller #26 Row 7 Serena Hytla #4H Dave CC Bayer #12 Row 8 Brian Conn #01 Porky Henley #43 Row 9 Presley Loggins #51 Kerry Ingram #3 Row 10 Kevin Wasson #7 Amy girl Conn # 9 Row 11 Kevin Loggins #60 Marky Desjardins Jr. #52 Row 12 Bulldog Carmen #4 Ricky Johnson #49 Row 13 Kevin Sassman #4K When the green flew, Peoria Racing legend Don Bohlander doing the honors as grand marshall, grip was still good accross the entire track and Beckham sailed into the lead ahead of Wisdonm and the Kelly boys. In spite of his stellar qualifying run, Wisdonm fought a push condition from the start, falling slowly back throughout the race, but there were a number of cars who made adjustments and moved rapidly forward from poor qualifying positions. Spud Loggins tried a number of different set ups for his team cars. He himself guessed right for qualifying but wrong for the race. The opposite was true for Presley Loggins who finished last in Shreveport. Mark w9 Desjardins seems to do the same in every race, qualifying poorly and roaring up through the field, and the same was true on this day with last place qualifier Kevin Sassman in the Nova, Rick Johnson in the debut of his new Torino and Kevin Wasson. But this was a relatively short race at 100 laps and Presley, who was starting a little bit farther up than this group, was the class of the field on this day, with the possible exception of Terry Beckham. By lap 50 she had passed Bill Hytla who was running second at the time and starting cutting into the roughly straightaway lead that Beckham had built. By lap 72 she caught him and did a slide job on by which took Beckham by surprise. He had been conserving his car by this time with such a lead and didn't realize the black nose of Presley's car as that of a car that was challenging his position. He stayed immediately on her bumper attempting to pass, and in one such attempt on lap 79 he went a bit high and Kevin Sassman in an incredible last to 1st performance got below both Terry and Presley and into the lead. ![]() Kevin Sassman He held onto the top spot until lap 86 but he had really burned up the right rear in his charge to the front and was becoming terribly loose. Beckham dove underneath and into the lead again, followed by Presley, but the little girl had driven a very steady race and remained glued to his rear bumper. On the white flag lap the pair came upon the car of former champion Dannyboy who's Cleveland power plant was down to 7 cylinders from about lap 80 on. He tried to give room low, but Terry went high and Presley went low into turn 1. While there was no contact Presley moved smoothly back up in front of the two and took the checkers by about a car length over Terry Beckham Jr. Third went to Sassman while the other Kevin 7-Eleven Wasson was close behind him in 4th after a wonderful run. Ricky Johnson had a very fine maiden run in the Cheerwine Torino to round out the top 5. The second 5 was headed by Mark Desjardins in his GTO, Charging Charlie Dave Bayer finished 7th after a hard battle through much of the race with the Carl Ross's Chevelle, Carl taking 8th. Closing out the top 10 was Porky Henley in a another good run for the Kit Car, and Canzady Loggins who joined her winning Twin sister in the top ten after a last lap side by side duel with the fast improving Amy Girl Conn. Next week its another hometown race for Lefty's group as the SNRA visits the high banks of historic I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo. Feature Results ![]() Winner, Presley Loggins 1. Congratulations to Presley on your BIG win. .....I took a gamble on an engine and came up shooting craps ....being a bi-week I figured that I had plenty of time to set the car up including plugging in a fresh 377 Windsor... being a 1/4 mi. clay track I figured that a small block Windsor would fit the bill. The car handled great, but it was obvious in qualifying that there just was not enough engine wise...even with running in 3rd gear as I basically finished in the same place where I started. That engine originally came out of a Late Model Sportsman car that is a few hundred pounds lighter than this Hobby Stock and the extra weight hurt us. The track prep guys did an awesome job...despite all the rain, I thought that the track stayed in great shape. Since it looked like Amy would have the advantage car wise, over me , both teams focused between qualifying and the feature on her ride getting it dialed in for the tacky clay track...this was her first smooth, tacky track to race on and I don't think she quite knew what to expect as far as the car hooking up. Looking forward to returning to I-70 (note* I-70 now sits idle...has not been a race there in years) ...its just 90 minutes East of here and I had pretty good luck there back in the 80's when it was dirt. It's a big, high banked 1/2 mi...a big engine track....In fact if Left Turn George and Amy and myself left our respective homes at the exact same time we would beat George by a couple of hours easily...probably the only way that we could beat him on or off the track.....to the victor goes the spoil of victory...the choice pit stalls at I-70 |

Looking forward to I-70 too Brian! Watched some incredible racing there in the 70's, Reffner, Maier, Phillips, Trickle, Bivins and the list goes on. That big ol track was a 1/2 mile at the apron and more like 5/8 up in the grove. There were lap times turned on the asphalt in the 70's that I am not sure have been equaled today---or at least nobody will talk about em. I can remember Don Gregory clicking off some 16:50's around '73 and the only one to keep up with him was Bivins. We had some guys turn those times at our local track which was 1/2 mile at the top edge so 'Ol Don was hauling the mail. His Jegs Camaro was killer looking. Sure hope our driver don't do what Bivins did in turn one in '71. Sure would hate for him to finish the race in the parking lot! Good luck to you and Amy next week!!! |

Congrats on the win Presley, that was a hard fought battle! Third place is a great finish for our team after qualifying last, a fun day passing lots of good race cars. I'm looking forward to I-70 also, saw some great races there in the late 90's.

Congratulations to Presley on the win; but don't get too comfortable in that spot maddr. Glad to have finished in the money; at least that will erase some of the sign-painters tab. Not a bad finish for a somewhat maiden voyage. I did take her out for a test and tune last weekend, but that was on a banked 3/8 mile asphalt track. I didn't compete in the main feature, just in a couple of heats to see how it would handle in traffic. Look out gals and guys, this big old soda-pop sponsored FORD is going to be moving up in the weeks to come. |

Presley, Terry sends his congrats on your win. He told me you were a 1/2 second ahead of every move he tried and you did great. Said he would take second even though its just the first loser spot! Maybe you should look into a USRA Modified next year, talk to Terry, he can give you lots of good information. The Nova is on the scales with new springs, shocks and a few things I can't talk about. Its also getting the "Bud" Jones 406 Odessa engine. We might should get Terry a Pilot License, this thing is gonna fly. Looking forward to I-70, its our favorite place to Rock! And by the way, who ever snuck the bottle of LaBatts in the cooler, come get it! It rusts the caps on our Becks and makes the Brats taste funny. Whats that stuff made with anyway, Smoked Maple Foam? |

Lefty George, that LeBatt's incident has either Dannyboy or Marky Desjardins written all over it! r:r Maybe Danny got some of it mixed in his gas and that's how the piston got fried. Last time we had pit mischief was about 5 years ago, and it was another Canadian related one. 4 time CASCAR champ Don Thompson Jr. got mad he couldn't pick up an SNRA ride and threw a banana peel on the track causing a major wreck. He was sorry though, no charges were pressed and all was ok. r:r

Chargin' I bet you are right about ol Fabulous and the LaBatts. Guess we will have to hang some rubber Frog Legs off his bumper when he aint watching. We are all pretty pumped up about I-70. I have log books dating back to 1970 on set-ups, tires, temp, gears, weight percentages, carb jetting and weather conditions. If we don't hit this one right, maybe we should just go back to go karts. Our sponsor big E.R. will be there to watch so we have the pressure on. Thing is, I'M the one that will have to face him on Monday morning:![]() Try telling a face like that the reason you finished 22nd! I might be the one traveling east if things don't go well and I don't like Solyanka and Coulibiac.

OK Racers, The Gohard Team is gonna let you in on a little known secret. For you guys that wanna go fast at I-70 next week, this is a must have. This is already installed on the Nova and while you guys get your eyes full and look it over, I have something else to work on. So………here it is. The Type 3 Hybird 58 Max Interval Eludium K-72 High Volume Bakewell Fuel unit with Hollingsworth up-grade parts and adjustable Blivit Tube. If you jokers aint got one, you better find one before next weekend or run in the back.

Doc, If you have one I have no doubt you have been in contact with some of the old Reffner crew. Thats how we found out about em back in '74 when 'Ol Tom pulled a fast one on the whole field. Make sure it has the Hollingsworth up-grade or it won't fit anything but AMC stuff. Save the Fluten valve for Milwaukee, thats where it comes in handy. Bring your go kart if you have one, we gonna have some fun in the I-70 infield over by turn three when things are slow. Good luck and stay off the wall, it'll jar the fillings right outa yer teeth! I-70 aint fer sissys! |

Yes you should, that is nothing more than an ancient Sonar-Takeestascope Clyde-Byde Baditer. Heck, you are from Wis-Kahn-Sun, you should know full well about the Type 3 Hybird. Didn't those Reffner boys teach you anything? You, sir better get the gloo dry on yer kit cars for I-70. Even Pete Hamilton got his tail scorched there with one. Sorry Hondo, we got a little off line there. Is this what you are looking for? (weight + aero downforce) X (tire Cf) divided by weight=g or maybe: lateral load transfer=(g) (weight) (c.g. height) divided by (track width) |
