SNRA Race #3 Sunshine State 200 5 Flags Speedway, Pensacola, Fla. 1/2 mile high banked asphalt oval, Friday, May 22, 2015

Memorial Day Weekend 2015 kicked off in Florida this year with the state's second SNRA race in 2 weeks. Buoyed by the intense action from the first race of the season, the always exciting and close race fans have come to expect from the SNRA, the largest crowd in Florida short track history was on hand already by 5:30 to take in qualifying which was headed by another great performance by Terry Beckham Jr. in the series' oldest car, the #1 62 Chevy of GoHard Racing. The series youngest driver, Kevin Loggins put his 67 Plymouth GTX on the outside of the front row, while his mom, JLog Loggins, Hondo Mullis in the big GTO and hot running Wisdonm Mueller in another Hemi, rounded out the top 5.

The Trophy Dash was another wildly competitive one, another thing that separates the SNRA from other series where most drivers simply ride around trying not to wreck. While Wisdonm held on off the Pole for the win, JLog was able to push her Camaro under Hondo's fast GTO and got inside and her nose up to Wisdonm's door at the line. Terry Beckham Jr. came from the back with her and edged Hondo at the line. Kevin ducked inside and was right on Terry's bumper at the line. A blanket could have been thrown over the field at the checkers on the end of lap 5.

Trophy Dash Line-Up:

Row 1
Don Wisdonm Mueller #3M
Jim Hondo Mullis #2
Row 2
Jennifer JLog Loggins #24
Kevin Loggins #60K
Row 3
Terry Beckham Jr. #1

Trophy Dash Winner
1) 3M Don Wisdonm Mueller 64 Belvedere
2) 24 Jennifer JLog Loggins 69 Camaro
3) 1 Terry Beckham Jr. 62 Chevy II
4) 2 Jim Hondo Mullis 64 GTO
5) 60K Kevin Loggins 67 GTX

A great run for JLog in her super clean ride.

Former Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula was on hand as grand marshall and flagged off the feature under light clouds and warm winds off the gulf. Kevin Loggins found the outside groove to still be somewhat slick as Terry Beckham Jr. roared out into the lead. He headed the field for the first 52 laps which was when Dylan Kelley's oil pump failed and he slowed coming out of Turn 2 causing a brief caution. Most of the cars ducked into the pits for a splash of fuel. Chargin Charlie Dave Bayer and Terry took on a set of tires as well, putting them to the back of the field. As it turned out, the added insurance didn't pay off for either. They worked their way up steadily up from the back and were into the top 10 while JLog continue to lead, by lap 95. It was here that several things happened. The quick change in the Chevy unknowingly was suffering from a manufacturing defect that resulted in a cracked yoke and exploded, leaving chunks of debris and lubricant across most of turn 3 and into turn 4. Charlie hit the wall but continue. Carl who was a ways farther back with the 6 shooter wasn't as lucky and suffered enough front suspension damage that he was knocked out of competition. Charlie got some quick body damage modification from crew chief Titus Lafontaine and with another set of tires again came from the back but could manage no more that 11th at the end, just edging Brian Conn at the line due to Brian being tapped by wife Amy coming out of turn 4 on the last lap. But we are getting ahead of ourselves.
There was but one more caution caused by the blown engine of Kevin Sassman on lap 123 but no one pitted and JLog maintained the lead until the green came back out on lap 130. At this point Hondo put his 64 GTO into the lead off a great restart and it was clear he was the class of the field, maybe. Within the next 10 laps the 5th running Mark Desjardins Jr. worked to the front, and the two GTO's ran side by side for around 6 to 7 laps, Mark on the outside. He eventually fully got by, in a great performance having come all the way from 17th. As impressively, if not a bit moreso, Kerry Ingram, continuing to surprise himself, brought his Nova from 21st and on lap 165 he had the lead. But ol Hondo really just was continuing to play it cagey, saving his car and tires. Mark meanwhile had used his up getting around Hondo earlier and slipped to third soon after Kerry took the lead. Hondo stayed low just behind Kerry who had also given up a lot coming from the back of the field. On lap 190 Hondo was on his bumper and while not bumping Kerry in a couple of laps Kerry slipped high and underneath went Hondo's big Pontiac on lap 193. This was a lead he held to the end taking the checkers about 4 car lengths ahead of Mark who nipped Kerry at the line. Another come from behinder, Lee Spud Loggins had his new Camaro up to 4th not far behind. He had charged more slowly and carefully and may have been fastest in the end, needing about 20 more laps. Trevor Kelly got his Laguna dialed in at last with dad Mark's help and rounded out the top 5. Farther back, but impressively in only her second race, Serena Hytla came home 6th, followed by last weeks winner, Bulldog Carmen, Canzady Loggins who just got her still fast mother JLog in the last lap, and Wisdonm to finish out the top 10.
Next week the series stays close to the Gulf but moves over to the historic stomping grounds of the old IMCA series, the 1/2 mile Louisiana State Fairgrouds for the iconic Pelican 150.

Way to go Jim on your big win....I tried to join the Goat heard up at the front BUT, my get up and go must have got up and went.
Also congrats to Don on an exciting trophy dash win.

Conversation in the pits moments after the checkers where tossed:
( After Amy has breathlessly ran into my pit area)

AMY: Honey, are you alright I didn't mean to slam into you.
BRIAN: You see me standing here, don't you? mm1
AMY: .....ohh
BRIAN: No, no, you didn't slam me, you didn't bump me , you didn't nudge me....you *rubbed* me. And rubbin' ,girl, is racin'.

I was hoping to get one more race on that engine, next weeks race in Shreveport, La., before tearing it down and freshening it up....I was definitely down in the power dept....for the next race after that, June 13th in Peoria, Ill I'll be running a different engine, a big inch small block on the 1/4 mile clay track...so barring any unforeseen mishaps in the engine dept. we'll have this one back up and going soon. This ones coming out and one of the back up reserves is getting plugged in for next week.

Well, well........ a coupla old "Goats" show 'em how it's done
Thanks everyone for the "High 5s".
Good racing tonight, I love this old track. Lots of history and many great drivers have made a bunch of laps here.
Frankly, I'm kinda surprised the crew has hit the set-up so well just a couple races in.
Got a call from 'Ol Lucky in Oklahoma saying he was proud of us and was chipping in more tire money..... .z.

Well, on to Shreveport. Guess I better leave my Ole Miss cap at home, those LSU folks are crazy, ya know?

See y'all next Saturday night !!
Maybe we'll see a B-52 flyover from Barksdale AFB.
