![]() The Events of the Ken Stabler 150, The Iron Bowl, Birmingham, Ala. 3/8 mile medium banked clay oval. May 15, 2015. Rookie Brian Conn Pushes High Powered Mustang Grande to Pole. Brian Conn lived up to the promise he showed last week as he pushed his 70 Mustang Grande to the pole in this, the SNRA's first dirt race of the season. The recently refurbished palace of racing in Birmingham boasted a great tacky clay surface on this warm humid Alabama evening, favoring the high powered machines. Just behind was Dr. Kerry Ingram, a rookie surprising even himself with good performances this year in his 65 Nova. Dr. KerryAmy Conn, a rally veteran proved she could handle the wheel on the tricky surface with her unusual Capri for third fast, with Dannyboy making the top 5 two weeks in a row in his new Falcon. The top 5 was rounded out by Wisdonm Mueller in the big Norm Nelson Hemi Belvedere, hearkening back to the 64 USAC season. Here's the starting lineup for tonights race: Row 1 Pole-Brian Conn #01 Dr. Kerry Ingram #3 Row 2 Amy Conn #9 Dannyboy Lynch #61 Row 3 Wisdonm Mueller #3m Terry Beckham Jr. #1 Row 4 Kevin Loggins #60 Bill Hytla #9 Row 5 JLog Loggins #24 Spud Loggins #96 Row 6 Kevin Wasson #7 Dave CC Bayer #12 Row 7 C. Bulldog Carmen #4 Mark W9 Desjardins Jr. #52 Row 8 Carl da Bugman Ross #27 Kevin Sassman #4 Row 9 Presley Loggins #29 Gordon Miller #26 Row 10 Jim Hondo Mullis #92 Trevor Kelley #4t Row 11 Dylan Kelley #90 Dave Porky Henley #43 Row 12 Canzady Loggins #51 Serena Hytla #4h The field is greatly enlarged since last week and more entries are on the way for next week as well, word has it. Rookies occupy the first 3 postitions and it looks like an interesting night is in store, dodging the raindrops permitting! The trophy dash was the usual close affair with Wisdom keeping the big Plymouth ahead from flag to flag but Dr. Kerry slid his way up from 4th to get a nose up to Don's outside door at the finish, with Amy C., Dannyboy and Brain Conn ready should either of them slipped. Dash Winner Wisdonm ![]() So good luck and God willing, a little later, the feature!!!! |

Welcome back ladies and gentleman for the feature event tonight, the Ken Stabler, one of Alabama's favorite sons. The "Snake" through the green and Brian Conn shot off the poll to lead the first 22 laps. Continually hounding him were Dr. Kerry Ingram in his Nova, soon to be replaced by Wisdonm Muller in the big Plymouth and on lap 23 he whizzed through to the lead. Don led through lap 90 but there was no shortage of action close behind, as hot shoe from last week Kevin Sassman moved up in his Nova to fight with the week 1 feature winner Dannyboy, and later Gordy Mueller. Brian Conn hung with the leaders as well. Carl da Bugman Ross also moved his 6 banger Chevelle into a contending position, when on lap 75 Pressley Loggins engine, overheating let go in a big way leaving a thick smoke screen. Presley had a few break in problems with her new Lap1 racing Camaro. The leaders, not far back came roaring up and with the lack of vision, Gordy, Danny, Carl and Kevin all got together into a mini version of the Big One. No one was injured, but Kevin was out and Dannyboy, Carl, and Gordy where able to continue after some repairs several laps down. Narrowly missing the melee was the leader Wisdonm and the 13th place starter who had been moving steadily up in his kit car, Bulldog Carmen. The hard charging , Hondo Mullis brought his dirt track Nova toward the front and he emerged unscathed as did new Gohard Racing driver Terry Beckham Jr., who hung around the top 5 all day. It was he who took over the lead from Don who dropped back just slightly, and he held the lead until lap 120 when Wisdonm and the smooth running former Champ Bill Hytla went by, having hung close from his 8th place starting position. But it was clear to all except the most casual observer that Bulldog Carmen had a good running Kit car all day, and at this point he turned it lose. He got past Hytla on the 135th lap and Wisdonm on lap 139 for the lead. Hytla got around Don and dogged Carmen's rear bumper for a few laps, but in the end Bulldog pulled away by a couple of car lengths for his first career win to the delight of car owner Mike Pulley. Winner Chris Bulldog Carmen Bill Hytla held off Wisdonm for second and Don was followed by Hondo and Beckham, rounding out the top 5. The second half of the top 10 was marked by an amazing 22nd to 6th run by Bulldogs teammate Dave Porky Henley, Dylan Kelly in his Chevelle, Good finish for Dylanand Brian Conn who continued to a good finish. Canzady Loggins made up a bit for her sister's bad luck, finishing 9th, and in an unspectacular though steady finish, Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer made in 3 Kit Cars in the top 10. Of special note, Serena Hytla, big Bill's wife, and Kevin Loggins, in a pair of mopars, finished their very first races in the lead lap, 19th and 13th respectively. Congrats to Bulldog and the Pulley group, its back to Florida next week for 5 Flags Speedway's Sunshine State 200! Finishing order of the Ken the Snake Stabler 150: 1. Way to go, Chris !! Nice job in the MOPAR !! Lefty, your new guy did a nice job also !! I struggled in practice and qualifying. Car was great, but I couldn't get comfortable in the seat. Thinking it was the colonoscopy I had this week.. The crew padded the seat a little more and I was good to go ![]() Looking forward to going down to 5 Flags Speedway next. Good seafood down there........

Congratulations to Chris on the win ...it was not an easy one as you had to race against the track as well...The rain that fell in the Birmingham area the days prior to the race made for a tacky, horsepower track in time trials which helped me a lot, but by feature time the track had started to change....about half way thru the feature the track was getting rough, especially in 3 and 4....I couldn't run up high in the loose stuff and the middle part of the turns was the roughest part....running that low groove really killed my horsepower and the guys with the smaller engines where able to get by me coming out of 4. Those Chrysler Kit cars are going to be tough to beat this year on dirt. They seem to have the perfect balance of set up and horse power and were a lot smoother on the track. Amy fought the car pretty much the last half of the race set up wise as it was set up for the track staying some what tacky and smooth which it didn't. Amy was able to pick up a dirt race in the minors this past week. She got 4th in her heat and 3rd in the feature with near perfect track conditions...unfortunately this track was a polar opposite for her.....where as this one is a big 3/8ths clay track that got rough in the end, she raced on a 1/4 mile dirt earlier in the week that stayed racy thru out the evening. Looking forward to next weeks race in Pensacola....after seeing how we did with both cars in the first race at New Smyrna it will give me a better idea as far as a set ups go for this track. |

Yep, you are right Chargin' and Soupergloo, Cream does rise to the top-----then it gets skimmed off and whipped. Yuk it up while you got the chance. |

Ordinarily I am insane, but I do have lucid moments where I am merely stupid. I never TRY to hit another car. But when I do I make sure its a Prius. | |

SO we are only 2 races in to the season and the overall points champion has been declared...more than likely in a Chrysler Kit Car......I have my reservations...case in point: Both Bill Hytla and Dylan Kelly in Chevelles figured out that a softer spring set up worked better in the long run verses what they qualified on...especially in Dylan's case. If the Chrysler drivers, especially those in the kit cars, are going to simply rely on the car being right on the money week to to week , track to track then the advantage will be on the side of those who can really read a track and set up accordingly... whether it be a Ford or Chevy. I am not saying that the MOPAR drivers can't read a track, just that they shouldn't get too comfortable with what the car can do for them on its own. At some point in time this season MOPARS weaknesses will be exposed...they simply can not dominate the top 3 or 5 spots every week...especially with the basically wide open engine rules in place and the wide variety of power plants out there...everything from a Chevy in line big 6 to a couple of big blocks. I am quite sure that I should have went with a smaller H.P engine going into last nights race and settled for starting farther back in the field and then worked my way forward.... |
