![]() Hello Racers and Race Fans to the 7th Exciting Season of SNRA Late Model Racing. This year we are going to take a page out of Southern Fried Drag Division Director, Wisdonm and place the race results up as the come in the same thread. First, time trials! SNRA Late Model Division Race #1 Mother's Day 200, New Smyrna Speedway, New Smyrna, Florida, 1/2 mile high banked paved oval, Friday, May 8th, 2015 Despite the hot conditions the cars got a lot of rubber down in practice and speeds were high, almost comparable with that of the newer style cars the SNRA has run the last few years. Fast time of the night went to Kevin Sassman in the Uncle Verde teams 454 powered 66 Nova. ![]() Fast timer Kevin Sassman. It was expected big blocks would fare well on the big half and it turned out to be the fact. 2nd fast was SNRA rookie Jim Hondo Mullis in his super clean 64 GTO, who was followed by the first small block Dave Chargin Charlie Bayer's new kit car Dart. Hondo's PonchoA Late entry, the fabuolous and famous former Champ Dannyboy Lynch proved it doesn't matter what brand he sits in as he took his Cleveland 69 Ford up to the 4th spot while the top five was rounded out by a big block, the 427 65 7-11 Ford Fairlane of defending champ Kevin Wasson. Perhaps not surprisingly, the slowest timer was Carl da Bugman Ross, with the 6 cylinder Chevelle, but he did not practice among the slower cars, the position was due to a slight bobble. On the other hand, slow was only a relative term on this evening, all the cars were fast and within 1 second of each other. He said he expected the Chevelle to run cool, and if the conditions are right works out, he believed he could stay out the full 200 laps without a stop and maintain track position. Starting lineup for Mother's Day 200 Row One 4k Kevin Sassman 66 Nova 2 Hondo Mullis 64 GTO Row Two 12 Dave Charlie Bayer 73 Dart Swinger 61 Dannyboy Lynch 69 Ford Falcon GT Row Three 7 Kevin Wasson 65 Ford Fairlane 500 02 Brian Conn 70 Mustang Grande Row Four 3M Wisdonm Mueller 64 Plymouth Belvedere Hemi 1 Curt Brennecke 62 Chevy II Row Five 43 Dave Porky Henley 76 Dodge Dart Sport 4 Chris Bulldog Carmen 76 Dodge Dart Sport Row Six 4T Trevor Kelley 76 Chevy Malibu Laguna 3 Dr. Kerry Ingram 65 Nova Row Seven 52 Mark W9 Desjardins 70 GTO 90 Dylan Kelly 70 Chevelle SS Row Eight 26 Gordy Mueller 67 Chevelle SS 9 Amy Girl Conn 76 Mercury Capri Row Nine 27 Carl da Bugman Ross 70 Chevelle Deluxe The 5 lap trophy dash with the top 5 qualifiers inverted had the Fords of Kevin Wasson and Dannyboy side by side for every lap with Danny gaining some momentum and winning by about 2 feet in the end. Behind this pair Charlie hugged the inside and beat out Hondo by inches with Sassman having no way through and finishing as he started. The fabulous Dannyboy took the first official Checkers of the year.On to the feature! |

The SNRA has put on great shows at New Smyrna before and the fans have come to expect it. That is exactly what they got. After the national anthems of the United States and Canada, the green was displayed by Grand Marshal Dwayne Wade of the Miami heat and there was no let up for the whole 200 laps except for a few minor accidents that put out the yellow on two occaisions. Kevin Sassman paced the field for the first 35 laps when Hondo took over in the big Goat for the next 15. On lap 52 Sassman got his nose under Hondo who was becoming a bit loose and while there was no contact the Pontiac made a wild loop as Sassman moved underneath. Others at the front were able to snake around, but the then 5th place runner Curt Brennecke found nowhere to go near the wall in the second turn as Hondo came to a rest with two flats near it and Curt was struck by the Kelly brothers sleek new Chevies. Bad Luck for the Brennecke Leftturns car.All had damage that was repairable and continued but went down laps as the damage was being repaired. When the green came back out on lap 65 a car that had making the biggest move, Porky Henley's Dart moved up and passed both Charlie and the leading Sassman and was pulling away until an overheating problem began to put him back on lap 80. He kept stopping for water but finally the water pump gave up and the radiator let go on lap 110, and he pulled off just after Kevin Wasson had left the race with a failed oil pump in the tunnel port Fairlane. Porky was the hottest until he overheated completely. After the caution upon which all cars stopped for a splash of fuel except one, that's right, da Bugman was the one, the Bugman held the lead until lap 131 when Charlie passed by on the outside in turns 3 and 4 to take the lead with Sassman in tow, and not too far behind, Dannyboy. Charlie used up a little too much of the McCreary's on this night.Brian Conn moved up shortly later after biding his time around 6th or 7th for most of the race but had a tire going down slowly giving him a radical push condition. Amy Conn, the former road and rallye racer faced a steep learning curve, but steadily improved. Just lapped at around lap 70 she actually battled back to stay close and when Porky had his problem, she unlapped herself and remained in the lead lap all day. On lap 165 Charlie having become a bit loose finally had to drop back to cool the tires a bit for a last push, surrendering the lead back to Sassman with Dannyboy moving to second and da Bugman behind them. On lap 171 Dannyboy, who had obviously set up the car for a long hot run with a slight push initially showed he had guessed right and battled side by side with Sassman eventually getting underneath to lead on lap 175. He would hold that position to the Checkers but not with ease. Gordy Miller and Kerry Ingram in his first race pushed their mounts to the top 5 and started to mix it up. Charlie picked it back up at lap 190 and got under Kevin S. on lap 191 and to the bumper of Danny, but the new car was just a bit used up and he and Kevin ran side by side dropping slightly back from Danny, Charlie just holding off Kevin by inches for the runner up spot. Not far back Gordy and Dr. Kerry rounded out the top 5. Gordy, 15th to 4th, not bad!Carl had guessed right and was still in 6th at the race's end, the hard charger of the race. Marky Desjardins made a fine steady run, improving his postion a good many spots as well to finish just behind Carl in 7th, Wisdonm had a steady run in the old Hemi to 8th, Bulldog Carmen was 9th and Amy Conn proved she was getting the hang of it to finish 10th just ahead of Hondo who had done a fine job of regaining the lead lap and Brian Conn who had about 4 lbs. of air left in his left rear tire but hug onto the lead lap gamely. Everyone could find something positive in the first race, all proving fast at some point, though Curt B. was heard to utter behind his breath, dubistien dumbkopf, was es loss?! Better nights come for everyone though in what has again shown itself to be an absolutely evenly matched racing series. It had been a long dry spell for former champ Danny and Charlie couldn't have been more happy with his new teenage crew chief. Next week its on to the Dirt for the best and most diverse circuit in the country, the newly refurbished Iron Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama. Finishing order of the Mother's Day 200: 1. Dannyboy Lynch #61 Falcon 2. Dave Charlie Bayer #12 Dart Swinger 3. Keven Sassman #4K 66 Nova 4. Gordy Miller #26 67 Chevelle 5. Dr. Kerry Ingram #3 Nova 6. Carl da Bugman Ross #27 Chevelle 7. If yer gonna quote Curt, you should listen a little closer. "dubistien dumbkopf"? Nope, what he said was: Mensch, bist ja dumb wie Schifferscheisse! Sie sind keine Steve Evans entweder! He had no comment on the accident, he was referring to the program. Some knuckle head spelled his name with a "K" and left out the "C" in Brennecke. He don't worry much about the cars, he says when you win you win, when you lose, there is another race next week. He gets a little touchy when the press butchers his name though. Hondo, how is the car? We got spare parts if you need em. |

Well George,Lefturns 75, I see I am facing some stern taskmasters this year, its tough being commissioner, promotor, reporter and driver/ team manager! Yeah, lets blame Steve Evans for part of this!In my defense though, you listed his name in the entry form as Brenneke, I see from the roof of the car you got that wrong. Ah ah ah.! Anyway, it was a lot of fun tonight and I corrected all mentions to Curt Brennecke and Mullins to Mullis for Hondo. He's ok too, only had to change the flats, car was fine when I talked to him after the race. Your pal, Dave CC B. Commissioner and Fellow racer. |

When you head to B-Ham, just meet me at my shop and we'll tow down together. Who's bringin' the food ??Thanks for the correction, Dave !! |

Hey Hondo, you're on! We will get there a little early to change some things on the Car. We will have some BBQ Chicken done up just right by Sarah and E.R. is gonna send us some thick Rib-Eye Steaks we can burn while in the pits. Hey Commish', you think you have it tough, I'M THE ONE that has to put up with Curt 7 days a week. You only have to deal with him for one night. |

I would keep a close eye on your crew chief if I was you, Charlie. Curt has yet to twist a bolt on either car but is quick to find fault with em. I had a talk with him in the hauler last night and told him I understand that this was the first race an all but he best get his act tied up in a neat package pretty quick. I reminded him that ol E.R. is spending a lot of bucks funding this gig and if he didn't get busy, he might find himself standing on a Stalingrad street corner thumbing through a Russian-English Dictionary. I asked him what he would rather have fall on him, Responsibility or snow flakes? I think he got the idea. |

Ya, Lefty, I had a talk with Titus too, I mean I can look at the books from the past years and get things as close as I can on set up, you absorb stuff, but he ain't getting his Purina and beggin strips for free for nothing! He looked sad for a minute, then shoook hands with me, three times, rolled over, barked once and went to sleep in the hauler, so I had to change the tires, pack the tools and load the car up by myself. It's really a useless crew to tell you the truth, a dog, a baby and two cats, r:r but I admit they did "a kinda pretty good" job last night. Dave B. |

.....Congratulations to Danny Boy on the well deserved win.... I picked up a small piece of metal, more than likely from the lap 52 mishap, in the Left rear. I figured that I just did not have the car dialed in until Amy went by and was frantically pointing toward the rear of my car....so I decided to just keep putting laps on the board until the tire let go or I got Black flagged. 4 pounds of air is awful low ...fortunately I had changed over to a medium/hard compound Good Year tire before the start of the race which is probably why I was able to finish the race. This was an unfortunate event as I knew we had a top 5 or top 3 car going into the feature...Hugh Midity had really worked hard after time trials on getting the carb jetted just right as well as figuring tires and pressure since we had never been to this track before and did not know much going into the weekend. Not running a quick change rear end really hurt me in the time trials. We ended up putting in the only other rear end that I had between time trials and the race. It really wound the engine up, so I had to take it easy on the foot feed. I am quite sure the power plant that Jones put together for me would hold up, but I want to put a couple more races on it to be absolutely positive. My initial plan was to hang out just outside of 5th place and let the top five either take each other out or use up their equipment....needless to say it was not meant to be this time.Looking forward to next weekend as both cars, especially the Mustang , are well suited for the dirt tracks of the South. |

...Yes, Amy did make a an improvement from where she started to where she finished, which both teams are proud of, but I have made the decision to send her back to the minors for practice on dirt tracks between SNRA races as the schedule permits. Right now, she is struggling with changing track conditions as you would find with a dirt race and I need her to be able to make adjustments to her driving style going from a heavy, tacky to greasy, dry slick track. I have another dirt Sportsman/Grand National car that I am going to have her run on the off days in the minors to improve her dirt racing game with the SNRA. As long as the track next week stays somewhat smooth , Amy should be alright with the coil spring set up in her car....if the track gets rutty , then she will have her hands full. |

Heck, I can't understand half of what Curt says most of the time anyway. Might as well be Klingon. Gohard Racing has an important announcement about Curt coming soon which may impact our season. We will check the rules and discuss it with the race officials. More details soon. Lefty, Crew Chief Gohard Racing. |
