The king showed up for the Daytona 500 with a black vinyl roof(actually just black textured paint.) The roof was just a clever ploy to draw attention away from other not so legal modifications of the body. Front fenders were turned down, front bumper narrowed. And a full belly pan cut the air from underneath. Body was aciddipped to think the metal and save weight. Unfortunately this backfired as the front of the roof tore loose during the race and cost Petty the win. Amt kit converted to race car. I made all of the changes to the body of this model (except I'd didn't dip it in acid lol) Powerslide decals.

:P Are you implying the "King" may have bent the rules a bit (not to mention bending the sheetmetal out of whack)? :o I just can't believe the "King" would do such a thing. BTW, that is one beautiful build of an iconic racecar. I remember that race and all the hoopla about the legality of a vinyl roof.
I build models because GOD allows me to and because I can't afford the real thing!!

Nice job Lee, don't see that one built very often. Nice pick on a piece of history. The King cheat? I don't figure the Big Richard had to cheat to win but I think he DID like the odds. It has been my experience in any type of racing that if you build "By the Book" you end up racing the guys in the back for last place. If the rules don't mention it, then by all means DO IT! They will change the rules if you smoke em! shhe
Ordinarily I am insane, but I do have lucid moments where I am merely stupid.
I never TRY to hit another car. But when I do I make sure its a Prius.

Great job, Lee.
All it needs is a couple strips of 200 mph tape across the top of the windshield...
