I'm building this 1/8 scale model of the car Ron Shuman drove back in 79 & 80. It was the house car for Gary Stanton. This one is going to the Motorsports Hall Of Fame in Phoenix. Cool, huh?Posted Image

That's cool. I saw a lot of Ronnie Shuman, back in the day, but only saw Billy a few times. You had to be a "Stand On The Gas Guy" to drive a house car for Gary Stanton. What an inovator he is to sprint car racing. Not the best in business, though. When he sold out to Challenger he had to agree not to build cars for 20 years. Times up now and he builds Mopar motors and some unique race cars.

After Ascot got their electronic scoreboard, and when Ron Shuman would qualify, he would look across the track to check his qualifying time while running at full speed, as he crossed the start/finish line. He was the only driver I ever saw do that.

Can't wait to see this build finished..!!!
I am in total awe at your talent for building these cars!!
SUPER job!!

Me, I do good if I can build models out of the box!!! LOL
With a few modifications here and there...... key word..."few" lol

I loved Ascot and was so sad when it closed in 1990. The CRA still has some of the best non wing guys around. Ron Shuman became president of that organization later on. Some of my favories were Oskie, Venard, Bubby Jones, Dean Thompson, Noffsinger, McSpadden, Wirth and of course Shuman. Non wing racing is good today but I think it was at it's best back then.

Have to add one name to your list, of which were my favorites as well. The California Cowboy, Ron Rea, who as also my sister-in-law's favorite driver. Don't remember another driver that would try and get the high groove as Ascot working during the main event like Rea did. It would usually cost him several positions until he got working or he ended up in the wall.
Other favorite drivers included Walt Kennedy, Tony Simon, and when he came over from Phoenix, Darrell Dockery. IMO I think Dockery was one of the most fearless drivers I ever saw race.
I agree, sure hated to see Ascot close, even though I was not attending very many races at that time. Maybe a half dozen CRA races or so after mid 1984, and most of the Turkey Night Grand Prix for the USAC midgets.....during the Ascot years from 1972 forward.
