Finally found some time to do a bit of modelling, so grabbed this old project off the shelf and found the rest of the parts I needed for it. Now I need to get some primer and paint done, but I will have to wait for the rain to stop which I don't think is going to happen for a few days. In the meantime I will get the engine painted, built and detailed and all the other little bits. Originally I started to build my own 5W body, just about finished doing that when Revell kindly announced the new 5W coupe and this build should really have been done and dusted 12 months ago. My aim is to have it finished for our model club NZ car night in December. The real car the model is replicating was originally a New Zealand new 32 Ford imported from Ford Canada in right hand drive with a 4 cylinder engine. Sometime in the late fifties it was rodded with a flathead V8, and in 1961 was bought by a local car dealer who raced on our dirt ovals. He intended using it for hill climbing and circuit racing. By 1963 (the version I am modelling) it was fitted with a 283 Corvette with twin 2bbl carbs and was a pretty quick car. It raced in a class against a few specials and other Ford and Chev coupes of the 1937/39 era all fitted with ohv engines. These guys were not too popular with the sporty car crowd, but they certainly were popular with the spectators as these things were pretty fast, but not that great in braking and cornering which meant spectaculor racing. Here is the car I am modelling. ![]() And my start. ![]() More when I can throw some paint at it. |

Well it hasn't stopped being Wet, cold and windy here for over a week. No chance for doing any painting. Have done some work on the engine and running gear and now hope that our normal decent Spring weather arrives soon. In the meantime here are two photos of the real car racing. ![]()

Great project Gavin. I have a question - it looks to me like the windshield has been modified and sealed closed?

Yes it has, possibly was a safety rule thing, or a cheap way of replacing the original to prevent the thing popping out. There was a fair bit of twisting going on with that car, the chassis was not boxed. |

It is a car I used to watch race in my youth, plus the the driver had been a dirt track hero of mine in the fifties, and I actually got to own his old dirt track stockcar many years after he had finished with it. Plus I like building replicas of real race cars that I enjoyed watching over the years and recording their history. If you check out the NZ MPH Model Club Forum and look at the Midget reference thread you will see what I mean. LOL! http://modelpetrolhead.proboards.com/index...play&thread=272 |

Finally a day and a half of decent weather, got the priming done yesterday, started on the colour coats today. The paint I am using is rattle can of dubious quality, it spurted and spluttered a fair bit, just hope it looks ago when it is dry. Too frightened to look until tomorrow! The paint is actually pretty good, and I usually decant and airbrush, but my workshop is not finished yet, so it was outside with the rattle can. Update photos soon. |

Well, the paint was not too bad, but it needs another coat and I have found another can of the same colour. Checked it, and it seems to be spraying much smoother. Now to mask off the roof and add the blue to the main body and recoat the stuff I sprayed in the weekend. Fingers crossed for a warm fine day when I get home from work tomorrow.![]() Also glued the engine block together, so that is a major step. r:r |

The weather came right, so I spent about an hour carefully masking off the roof to paint the rest of the blue. A light dusting of primer and 12 hours to dry and then the first blue coat..................disaster, the paint on the sides crazed like mad after I had only got a light dusting on. I tried to save it after it had 24 hours to dry, sanded it back and it looked ok, another dust of primer, ok, another light coat of blue and crazing again. It is now sitting in the stripper and I will get out my airbrush and make some room to paint it with enamel once its stripped and cleaned up. Funny thing the other parts had the same primer and a light mist plus a heavier pass and no problem, apart from the trunk lid all those bits are from a 1996 original issue 3 window coupe kit, while the body is recent 5 window made in China. |

Sorry to hear the paint job did that to you. The newer kits use a softer plastic than the older kits. Hotter paint will do that just about every time to the newer kits. I do three coats of primer on these bodies over a weeks time. Sand between each coat of primer before the next. Color coats are done same way
