.cc. Guys, I kinda really like these jalopy cars, but I've got a few questions. .?. I have many different pictures and know of some reference material, but unfortunately not much is in color. So any help would be great. Did they use metallic paint back then? Did they use 3 colors on any cars(such as bottom dk. blue, the top lt. blue and white trim or body molding? Did they shadow the numbers? I know I might be asking a lot, but please be very descriptive, as I am really trying to build accurately. Thank you very much, my friends. .z.

r2d2 Obviously paint was one of last concerns on jalopies. Back then, it was really whatever your wallet allowed. Paints in the early years were either laquer or enamels in basic solid colors (metallics didn't come out 'till the late '50's). Enamel was the cheapist way to go, so it prevailed. Like today, when layin' down enamels, you get what you get once it's layed down. Many of the earlier cars were just brush painted in bright contrasting colors. Again the wallet prevailed. Many cars were even painted with a Deluxe Kirby Vacuum Cleaner !!! The lettering and numbers followed basically in the same manor (whatever talent was available), whatever you could afford. .cc.

TOM "hit it" pretty well "right on the nose", DARYL.............. The VERY FEW that I can ever remember that were "nicely painted" & lettered (where they "looked professionally done") were almost always sponsored by a "paint and body shop", or possibly a "sign painter's business"......... but those were RARE...........

I do remember SEVERAL that were "two toned" and lettered, and looked "pretty decent" from the stands.............

You might try brush painting them with Water base acrylics. Then lightly sand it.

Let me add my 2cents. My Dad's first car was just the color it came from the factory--green. The second was blue/white. So quite a few guys were 2 tone, but nothing very fancy. My brother Al's first coupe was black with a yellow stripe over the roof/trunk... He always taped the ## on the doors, then painted in side the tape. It's funny, as a kid, I thought those old jalopies were BEAUTIFUL!! Then I see a pic of it today, and say WHAT!!?? .?. But that was all I'd seen, and those guys were my heros... 1bbb So those cars were IT. The neat thing about those cars were they were all differnt--not like today. Hope this helps, Neal
