Couple models of John Morton's rides from the early 1970's![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Both are literally box stock builds from Revell circa 1973-75. Both kits included tubing to create the oil and water lines, and yeah, I actually installed them! And yeah, they are showing their age.... Interest in John Morton came from his brief attempt at running with the CRA sprint cars at Ascot in 1973 or 1974. He never seemed to get the handle on driving a sprint and evidently stayed with the SCCA group. Ed |

Mike, actually Datsun has always been Nissan, but for some reason when Nissan started selling their cars in the U.S. they opted for the Datsun name. If I knew why, I have forgotten. Ed |

DAT and SUN are part of the last names of some of the owners of Nissan at that time....something like that. I know thats where that part came from, dont know all the history to that..why its called that in America and so forth. I know where one of the Morton 510's is right now though. I talk to the owner every day as a matter of fact. Pretty cool little car. Ron |

Hey Ron... Thought the name Datsun came from some German guy, when asked by a Nissan representative to come up with a suitable name and when the German asked how soon they needed the name, the Nissan rep said they needed to have the name within a week and the German replied "Dat soon?"  Ed |

Pretty cool old builds Ed. They are great kits, but the ride height especially on the 240Z is rather high. I used to see and Tech Inspect those cars most every week at Cal Club (SCCA) events. You must be from socal to have been inspired by his appearance at Ascot in CRA sprints. Another SCCA racer who won the SCCA regional title for A/Sedan in 73 went to CRA but with a lot more success. My lifelong friend John Ryals. Morton raced the Nissan GTP cars in the 80s and 90s with Geoff Brabham. And the reason given to me why Nissan did not use that name when they came into the US market, is that they felt Americans wouldn't understand the name. Nissan translates as "Number 2". In Japanese culture, God is the only #1 in whatever, and the best that anyone else could possibly hope to attain is #2. They knew that to Americans to be second best is not good. They finally figured out that Americans are used to names from other languages and just plain wouldn't bother to translate the term and so would have no problem with the name Nissan. Chevy made a mistake with the name of their economy car in the 60s and trying to export it to Mexico. In Latin, "Nova" means New, but in Spanish, "nueva" is new and "No Va" means It Doesn't Move. So the car they thought would take the place by storm didn't sell. |

Richard... I moved to Calif in 1972 and left in mid 2001, though my race attendance dropped drastically in 1984. Was not real happy with the 240Z kit as it seemed that Revell just added some race parts to their street version kit. Compared to the 510 where the "glass" was installed from the outside and the Z had the customary installation from the inside. Am sure there were other oddities that made the Z disappointed vs. the 510. Remember John Ryals....IIRC he ran an Edmunds sprint when he started with CRA. Also had one of the neater paint schemes at the time. Didn't he also run some of the USAC Western States pavement sprint series? Of any race I tried to make were the Turkey Night Grand Prix midget races, especially when Ascot was around. That night I made my annyal "pilgrimage" to the turn one stands. Was there for all of Ron Shuman's record breaking number of wins in that event. Even the one that was run in the fog. Don't remember what year it was, but from my spot in turn one I lost sight of the cars about the time they passed the scoreboard on the backstrecth and caught sight of them again just as they neared the start finish line. Was also interesting watching Ron Shuman qualify at Ascot. He would look over at the scoreboard to check his time while at full throttle. Ed |

Ed, I had previously missed this reply of yours, back to it now... No, John Ryals sprint car was NOT an Edmunds chassis, it was by a smaller, unheard-of builder but was almost completely replaced except for the cockpit over the years it was used. Sprint car frames are considered disposable these days, but until the late 80s, they were raced for decades with updates, alterations and repairs. He still has it. It last saw action for a TV commercial just before Ascot met the bulldozer. They wound up cutting the video, but used the audio. Here's a couple shots of it later in my driveway behind my truck: ![]() (slightly altered photo) ![]() He got put on his head and into a hospital by rookie drivers 2 races in a row at Ascot and switched to just running pavement sprints and supermodifieds. He is credited with being the only guy to win a West Coast Supermod race in an upright non-offset sprint car chassis using this same car he ran in CRA dirt action. Ryals still has his old car, but has 2 late-model pavement sprint chassis. He also ran some of the Ventura Thunder dirt sprint races a couple or 4 years ago with a late model chassis. ![]() I worked with Ryals on a couple of offset pavement cars for Shuman in the early 90s. That white with bright blue panels on one side and red panels on the other paint scheme he used on his sprinter in CRA in the 70s was developed on his 68 Camaro A/Sedan SCCA racer. The colors were nearly the same as those used on the BRE Datsuns he raced against (often on the track at the same time, but different classes). He wishes he had that Camaro now. OK...back to work on the Baja Bug in the driveway now! Richard |
