My Grant King collection. Built all except one which I "saved" from being tossed when my brother decided he did not want the one he had built.

The one I did not build, but added decals and painted on numbers is the all yellow #1x, kind of hiding in the back....
Three have other engines than the kit supplied Chevy
One has a scratch built hood from the cowl section of the hood forward..
enjoy...

Forgot to mention there are a couple of Ford powered cars in that group, one of which is pure fantasy (Cosworth Ford F-1 engine)!

Hi Ed,

Is this kit available now? I really enjoyed the non-wing sprint cars, but I only have one kit.

The Grant King sprint is currently available from Dirtrack Racecars
www.dirttrackracecars.com
or Model Roundup
www.modelroundup.com
Quickest way to find it there is through the Model King/Private Production tab
Listed a sprint/supermodified, with primarily an orange painted sprint showing with two others in the background. Kit is basically a 2n1 kit, can be built as the sprint or a wedge shaped supermod.

Dirtrack Racecars has an E-Bay store, but do not know the name/address for it, if you send an e-mail to the contact address, they should respond with the name of the "store".

Couple of pics:

The #18 is out of the box build with a couple of minor trims

The #5 is also out of the box build but with front portion of belly pan and side panels removed, nose was glued to hood and drastically trimmed.

The #2x was modifed after completion to the form seen here. The fuel tank cover cone was modified by trimming a bit off, adding file card to enclose the opening, converting it to fuel tank. Majority of the hood was scratch built using Plastruct plastic sheet, only the cowl part of the kit hood remained. Cowl stone shield constructed from file card. front nerf bar scratchbuilt from Plastruct plastic covered wire. Again side panels and belly pan were trimmed back.

The #1 has a Ford engine salvaged from and old (read 1971) AMT Ford Phaeton, as were the main part of the headers. FI intake and velocity stacks came from the junk box (though more than likely from the original MPC 1971 Mustang). Exhaust collector tubes are from junk box, exhaust tips are from paint brush protective tube. The taller hood stone shield made from file card. again nose was glued to hood, cut way down, from edge filled with plastic and putty to create the more pointed part. Hood was cut at the cowl in order to be able to remove it.

Have five of the current issue of the Grant King sprint, though not enough for the plans I have for these kits. Neat thing about the kit is there is 4 different decal sheets. These depict four upper midwest drivers who lost their lives in racing incidents. Two from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, one from Jackson, MN and one from Iowa.
The current kit has the older style hood, where the injector shield is a separate piece, unlike the ones in a couple of the shots above

Love 'em Ed!!!

Especially the 2x black car. Great hood!
And they're all non-wing cars, which is a good thing.

If you don't crash once in a while, how do you know you're going as fast as you can?

Richard...
Yeah....nothing like watching non-wing sprints run, especially on dirt!! Pavement just ain't the same. Have watched a few WoO shows, and don't care for winged shows....though watching most of the WoO stars of the day in the early 1980's qualify at the Santa Maria Speedway, Santa Maria, CA, where Kinser and Swindell in particular never lifted going into the corners!

Of course my views might be different if I had been "raised" on winged sprints, but since I spent many a night at Ascot in the 1970's and early 1980's, I am partial to non winged sprint shows, anytime!

Only winged cars I enjoyed were the old NASCAR Supermodifieds at the old San Jose Speedway in 1972. And a couple of newer styled supers at Irwindale Speedway in 1999/2000.
