I think they rushed the ending because the last mission already takes two to three hours, the last 30 to 45 minutes or so being dialogue and cinematic without a point to save the game. I don't dislike the ending as much as a lot of others seem to. I also don't understand that whole 'BioWare betrayed their fans' outcry. It's their story and they get to end it however they choose. I'm glad they didn't just throw together a "and they all lived happily ever after," wrapped in a nice little bow. I'll have to check to see if they did to this, but it would have been nice if after beating the game and they return you to the ship before the last missions you get some codex entries explaining further what happened.

Yeah, I beat it too. The ending doesn't piss me off like it seems to for everyone else. I would like more closure, but I'm okay with the general nature of the end.

Definitely needs more closure in my opinion. There are several holes i want filled in. Ot doesn't bother me to the point of nerd rage like the rest of the internet but it annoys me more than it annous you two.

SPOILERS (they are really tiny)

reading around, apparently the end was supposed to be an infoctrination sequence. But, they couldn't figure out how to implement it properly and were in a rush to get the game out. Wierd how the fan theory of indoctrination lined up close.

My main questions:
-if each ending is supposed to be equally valid, why is there a glimpse of shepard surviving at the end of the destroy option?
-why does my crew, which i take to earth for the final conflict, end up in the normandy when joker is trying to outrun the blast?
-what happens to all the species now trapped in the sol system due to the exploded mass relay? The turians and quarians can't eat any food in that environment and the rest of the fleets are just as fucked in terms if being trapped far from their homelands. Did we save the galaxy just so a genophage cured krogan can get antsy and kill everyone on earth anyway and take the planet?
-if the godkidreaper was in control of the citadel the whole time, why couldn't it open when sovereign attacked in the first damn place? Or just summom the reapers on it's own?
-this one is more of a personal complaint: it sucks that we either doomed all the humans on the crew or garrus and tali when the normandy crashed on that planet. Either the flora and fauna are dextro amino based or leve amino based. Sadness. I guess synthesis could help, but who knows.
-the stargazer post credits bit just confuses the hell oit of me. I assume it's there to say "everything turned out okay" but it's way to far in the future or lacks so much context that it doesn't help.

The Stargazer was voiced by Buzz Aldrin, so I can't complain about that at all.

Spoilers:

Yeah, no matter what option you choose there are a lot of people stranded on Earth and the Turians and Quarians will likely die soon unless they are able to use the stores of food they brought to find a way to grow/mass produce it on Earth. Quarians are doubly fucked due to the need of suit maintenance and the consequences of a suit tear. Also, depending on your actions, you brought Rachni to Earth too, which will be fun afterwards, I guess.

Also, if you chose the 'Destroy' option, there are pieces of reaper all over the Earth's surface. It's been shown that deactivated reapers still indoctrinate things around them. With no reapers left this will have less consequences, if any, but something might happen.

If you cured the genophage, then yeah, Earth is the new krogan planet and humans are the new pyjak. Wrex would probably keep the Krogan in line for the rest of his lifespan, but after that you'd probably get a Wreav in charge.

We aren't completely doomed though. There are some of the best minds of the humans, asari, turians, and salarians stranded on Earth. People there know how to make spaceships, how to terraform or settle Mars and the Moon, how to create FTL drives, etc. It'd be a long process, but we aren't starting from scratch.

These don't bother me though. Even the Deus ex Machina of the Crucible couldn't prevent there from being serious consequences to the war. In the end, no matter the end, you were successful in your goal - the end of the reaper extinction cycle.

I know some people are upset that this more or less definitively ended the series, but that doesn't bother me either. They've said all along that this is a trilogy.

I'd be fine with the most catastrophic end possible as long as i got some doors definitivey closed on some of my issues. It's a testament to the story that it made me feel good/bad as certain things happened, but the end replaced a lot of emotion with confusion.

Anyone else participate in Operation Goliath over the weekend? BioWare had a weekend multiplayer event where if the community killed 1,000,000 brutes then everyone who participated would get a prize. Also, if you were part of a squad that got a partial or full extraction against reapers on silver difficulty you'd get an additional prize.

I was able to get a partial extraction with strangers, so I think I'm set there. They haven't announced whether everyone reached 1,000,000 brutes yet. Unfortunately they didn't have a running counter going.

Cat and I were able to go team adept with randoms and kick ass with biotic explosions. we've gotten two extractions that I remember. Our luck didn't last beyond that I don't think. We killed many a brute on the failed subsequent runs however.

I was going with the krogan soldier I unlocked. He's kind of a glass cannon against the reapers. You have a ton of health and armor but it doesn't stand up to prolonged barrages of marauder SMG fire, cannibal grenades, and ravager explosions. I can one-shot any of the non-elite mobs with a single melee attack, but tend to get taken down eventually, especially if I waste my time one-shotting the husks with a headbutt.

Against Cerberus and the geth the krogan soldier tends to be much better.

This is pretty well done and makes a good argument about what happened at the end of the game:

I don't know where VG Cats is getting that. Then again, I'm not a member of the subset of fans that feels slighted. This is a statement that the cofounder of BioWare put out (and seems very different from a "fuck you").

Quote:

To Mass Effect 3 players, from Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare...

As co-founder and GM of BioWare, I'm very proud of the ME3 team; I personally believe Mass Effect 3 is the best work we've yet created. So, it's incredibly painful to receive feedback from our core fans that the game's endings were not up to their expectations. Our first instinct is to defend our work and point to the high ratings offered by critics - but out of respect to our fans, we need to accept the criticism and feedback with humility.

I believe passionately that games are an art form, and that the power of our medium flows from our audience, who are deeply involved in how the story unfolds, and who have the uncontested right to provide constructive criticism. At the same time, I also believe in and support the artistic choices made by the development team. The team and I have been thinking hard about how to best address the comments on ME3's endings from players, while still maintaining the artistic integrity of the game.

Mass Effect 3 concludes a trilogy with so much player control and ownership of the story that it was hard for us to predict the range of emotions players would feel when they finished playing through it. The journey you undertake in Mass Effect provokes an intense range of highly personal emotions in the player; even so, the passionate reaction of some of our most loyal players to the current endings in Mass Effect 3 is something that has genuinely surprised us. This is an issue we care about deeply, and we will respond to it in a fair and timely way. We're already working hard to do that.

To that end, since the game launched, the team has been poring over everything they can find about reactions to the game - industry press, forums, Facebook, and Twitter, just to name a few. The Mass Effect team, like other teams across the BioWare Label within EA, consists of passionate people who work hard for the love of creating experiences that excite and delight our fans. I'm honored to work with them because they have the courage and strength to respond to constructive feedback.

Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You'll hear more on this in April. We're working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback we've received. This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games, so rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue.

The reaction to the release of Mass Effect 3 has been unprecedented. On one hand, some of our loyal fans are passionately expressing their displeasure about how their game concluded; we care about this feedback, and we're planning to directly address it. However, most folks appear to agree that the game as a whole is exceptional, with more than 75 critics giving it a perfect review score and a review average in the mid-90s. Net, I'm proud of the team, but we can and must always strive to do better.

Some of the criticism that has been delivered in the heat of passion by our most ardent fans, even if founded on valid principles, such as seeking more clarity to questions or looking for more closure, for example - has unfortunately become destructive rather than constructive. We listen and will respond to constructive criticism, but much as we will not tolerate individual attacks on our team members, we will not support or respond to destructive commentary.

If you are a Mass Effect fan and have input for the team - we respect your opinion and want to hear it. We're committed to address your constructive feedback as best we can. In return, I'd ask that you help us do that by supporting what I truly believe is the best game BioWare has yet crafted. I urge you to do your own research: play the game, finish it and tell us what you think. Tell your friends if you feel it's a good game as a whole. Trust that we are doing our damndest, as always, to address your feedback. As artists, we care about our fans deeply and we appreciate your support.

Thank you for your feedback - we are listening.

Ray

Oh? Why? I find it the best explanation.

(Contains spoilers, frankly if you haven't beaten mass effect 3 go do that before coming here)

It may be the best explanation, but it would kind of tick me off that shepard would've just become a reaper and that makes all three choices useless. Thus, it's like you lose, and there's nothing you can do. Maybe I'm following this wrong or maybe I'm confused.

Actually, if people want to get mad about their choices having no impact for the ending, heck, most of Mass Effect 3 was just basically: "Oh you did that, well this happened anyway. Oh you wanted Anderson on the council in 2? Well, Udina is on the council now in 3, sorry. You blew up the collector base in 2? Well, Cerberus got what it needed from it anyway.

I think the only choice made from 2 that affected 3 the most was the choice with the Geth (destroy or rewrite the dissenters).

Again though, I enjoyed the game(s) thoroughly, the ending didn't bother me too much, maybe if I beat it again with 100% galactic readiness it'll make a difference.
