Slayer of the lame Glitter Elves
|
Being the retro kind of guy, I bought this for the PS3 and recently completed it. Storyline It's been 12 years since Duke saved the Earth from the Aliens and scored a field goal with the cycloid emperoer's eye. Now they are back and kidnapping the Earth's woimen again! It is up to Duke again to save the Earth and kick same alien Arse in the process. I quite liked the plot. It dragged you into it as it went a long. That said it was fairly predictable and the ending was anti-climatic. However, Duke himself is scornful over the ending, "What kind of Shit ending is that? I'm not dead - and I'll be back for more baby!" I think they got Duke's character perfect again, and I was stiches of over his dialog fairly often. 8/10 Gameplay This had some serious flaws. They have locked onto the idea that Duke's health is his 'ego' and damage reduces it and he will die if it depletes completely. However, it recharges if you aren't hit for a period of time (like Destroy all humans Crypto Shields) - I don't think it works in this kind of game. In the early levels, it merely encourages you to be reckless, as you can just recover the damage later. In later levels, the sheer difficultly means that you will need the recharging of it to survive. That said, I think they should of stuck with only like a 25% recharge and you gain it back by killing stuff, and perhaps making the enemies less deadly to compensate. Secondly, you can only carry 2 weapons at a time. A serious issue, as some weapons are more effective against certain enemies, so you are left guessing which ones you need. Also, there are special ammo crates that fully restore your ammo an unlimited amount of times. I would of preferred less ammo but the ability to carry all weapons. Another issue is the er... extreme pornographic nature of this game. I expected some, but early in the game there is a whole 2 levels or so of seeing young girls being all but tectacle raped (only a slight exaggeration) followed by a Strip Club level (no enemies at all. Just got to find some items) which I felt was a tad excessive. That said, after that point the pornography is ignorable and will only be visible if you seek it out (which in game, you should as it boosts your max ego if you find it) The enemies are relatively deadly and are quite hard to shoot and locate at times. However, unlike traditional Duke Nukem Games, there are long segements of levels without enemies - just wondering around. This does build suspense and atmosphere. The enemies all tend to cluster around certain points, which makes those points tricky. The game has a 'checkpoint' system, which reloads the level should you die from that point. They are placed often enough to be fair to you. The bosses are not as tricky as they could be (It is easy to run and hide to regain ego), although one is very hard despite this! It is a nice touch that you get to humilate a dying enemy ![]() I found some of the puzzles tricky, as I wasn't sure where I was going or what I had to do. However, I am pleased to say I solved them all without looking them up online. My least favourite level though was the Hive levels. It was confusing, and very hard to work out what you were meant to be doing. Plus, you had girls being tentacle raped everywhere. The driving levels was also flawed. You had to cross a desert terrain in a monster truck, avoiding/killing enemies as you went and clearing jumps. Should you go off a cliff, you merely respawned back on the road - you don't die. The main issue with this is that it encourages you to be reckless. Also, the truck isn't damaged - you just lose ego - as the enemies are infrequent the loss of ego is never an issue really. Finally, there are a series of those levels where the truck ran out of gas, which was tiresome as you had to find more - at least 3 times I think. Still, it is kinda fun running over pigcops in the truck :D. It is fun dismembering enemies with shotgun, and there are plenty of Duke jokes to keep you laughing 12/20 Characters Duke Nukem is still as funny and abusive to his enemies as ever. There are some Troops running around, mostly getting killed (In fact, pretty much everyone you meet dies soon afterwards :D) The enemies are not stupid, and outwitted me on many occasions, as I struggled to locate them. However, like I said, the bosses could and should be tougher to beat. 9/10 Graphics Most will be disappointed with this part of the game. I found them adequate, but you might feel less... forgiving of them. During the hive level, I wasn't able to see what I was doing because of how poorly lit it was a times. However, once you get used to them, you'll be ok. They add atmosphere to the game as it progresses. 3/5 Replay value You can replay all the levels in the chapter select menu, and also play it on a harder difficulty. I heard that 'hard and super hard' difficulties, (Come get some and Damn I'm good (Unlockable after you complete the game)) are insanely difficult. The game has not tempted me to replay it and I probably won't. However, collectable whores might be tempted to. 2/5 Final Score 34/50 Normalsville - C+ Verdict If you played the original series of Duke Nukem on the PC, this has plenty of nods to that series. If you've played any Duke Nukem game before, this is well worth at least a rent. If you like tentacle rapes, this is worth buying probably. If you'll looking for a 1st-person Shooter, I'd prolly avoid this one, as there are better ones out there. Still, Duke fans should at least get some enjoyment out of it. I look forward to the next installment and hope it improves remarkably. |

played one of the first ones a looooong time ago. I never even considered getting this one because I figure it would be a waste. On the other hand, i got mass effect 2 a while ago for around 18 dollars and i've got to say, it's pretty goddamn amazing. I beat it today and am replaying the campaign on a harder difficulty. It is the ONLY game in existence that made me squeamish. |

Unless you're a real Duke fan, I wouldn't buy it. I'd rent or borrow it. I'm willing to give them another shot - they spent 14 years trying to release this game. Now they can start from scratch! |

14 years to realease a C+ game? i wouldn't give them any more money. probably even entomb them for several years to think about fucking time management. |

The Problem was, the company kept being bought out and the release date pushed back because it became obsolete. EG: 'Let's use the Quake engine' *Delay* 'Let's redo the game with the Quake 2 engine' *Delay* 'Let's redo the game with the Quake 3 engine!' Etc, etc. |

I think that's why the reviewers were so harsh on the game. ~14 years to release a game this is the result?! Actually, this may sound silly, but if this game had been a release for the 360 when it first came out, or somewhere around that time, I think would've been remembered as awesome. I kinda thought it to be silly to keep trying new engines, after reading about it but maybe it was bad management in that regard and wanting to remain current? For what the game is, I enjoyed it. I'd almost, (almost) dare say it's campaign was better than the last couple of Halo game's campaigns. I also enjoyed the object interactivity with the game. It's not perfect, but it's amusing to be able to interact with a soda machine, the clocks have the correct time in real life, and the answering machines are amusing. I wouldn't pay $60 for this game, maybe $20 though. I may have more to say on it later, but I have to go to work...again. |

reminds me of my reaction to the third golden sun game. they took 7 years to make it, i think it was, and the final product was good, but not as good as teh game before it in the series |

You've got this game? Like I hinted, it wasn't as good as it should of been - but, I'd be willing to play the sequel. Hell, it deserves another shot. I get the feeling it was rushed out before they 'had' to update it again. It seems they rewrote the entire script between updates as well. |

I think that is fair. A lot of the online reviews bashed it over things Duke has always done. It should get one more sequel and then be put to bed I reckon. |

No, I played it at a friend's house. I doubt my parents would let it into the house if they knew about even half the stuff in it. |

I think it was on Let's Rock/Normal. Started in the middle/near the end, it was where you just got the last gas can for your truck. Played a few other levels too, but mostly from there on. I don't think I'll be able to beat the game on any difficulty above Let's Rock though, maybe Come get some, but I doubt it. It was pretty challenging on Normal. |
