so ive finally gotten around to beating golden sun again. the final boss was much much easier than i remember it being in the past, although of course i remember it being damn near impossible the first time i tried fighting it so much much easier is still a bit of a challenge. so i shall commence with a review

Gameplay: Golden sun is pretty much a JRPG through and through, so if this si a style you enjoy, as i do, then youll enjoy it. the main distinguishing feature to golden sun is the djinni. these are creatures, based on the elements of earth (venus), fire (mars), water (mercury) and wind (jupiter). there are 28 djinni in golden sun, 7 of each element, and they are acquired in a couple of ways, many are found in the various dungeons of the game, and must be beaten in battle to be captured, some are acquired through puzzle solving, many of these dont require a figth for capture, at least one is given as a reward and a few are found on the world map where they must be fought in a random encounter (but only in specific locations). the classes in golden sun are based on the combination of djinni a character has, as well as the character's inherent element so there are a variety of possible party combinations with different strengths and weaknesses. additionally, a djinn can be used in battle for some effect. each of the 28 is different, although some only differ by element (at least 2 attack and stun for instance), djinni used this way are, in a sense, unequipped from the character, and can then be used for summon magic. different combinations of djinni allow you to call different summons. the main weakness in this system in golden sun 1 is that there are only 16 summons, corresponding to having 1, 2, 3, or 4 djinni available for a specific element (4 mercury djinni let you summon boreas for instance) and there are no summons for exoctic combinations. i go into detail about this system because, as i said, it sets this game apart, and is a large part of what makes it great. gameplay does lose a poitn for horrendously slow cutscenes though.
19/20

storyline: the storyline is simple, you live in a world with a magic system, known as alchemy (the japanese just dont have proper respect for the actual historical definition of that word do they?) and this power had been sealed up some time in the past to prevent its misuse, but, due to events at the beginning, a group has come into possession of the necessary items to unseal alchemy and release its power on the world. this is done by lighting the beacons of the 4 elemental lighthouses with the elemental stars. you are charged with making sure this does not happen, and chase after this group. but of course its a little bit more difficult than that. its fairly good as far as these things go at any rate, it gets major detractions because you have to listne to the shit your characters say. good god, its like a fuckin preacher teamed up with an idiot to write the dialog.
7/10

characters: you have 4 main characters in your party: isaac, a venus adept (earth magic user guy) who doesnt talk a whole lot. he is the leader of the group.
garet is a mars adept, hes the type to talk before he thinks (assumign he even bothers to think at all). he is isaacs friend since childhood. he and isaac both grew up together in a small village where a serious tragedy struck 3 years before the main storyline.
ivan is a jupiter adept. if this were set in more modern times, hed be the nerd of the group. he gives off the idea of sensitivity and wisdom...to a certian extent. he is an orphan who has been raised by a successful merchant.
mia is a mercury adept, shes the healer of the group. she and her brtother are the last remaining members of the mercury tribe, a clan of healers from the frigid north, at the base of the mercury lighthouse. she is compassionate and kind, unlikely to resort to violence.
then there are you enemies. the include the brutish mars adepts saturos and menardi who you must fight at least 4 times throughout the story, and their ally alex, mia's brother, a powerful mercury adept, who you never actually have to fight, but who is also clearly the mastermind behind the group.
all in all the characters are decent, though your characters are way preachier than id like.
8/10

graphics: not much to say here. graphics are pretty good, and in battle graphics are spectacular
5/5

replay value: like most rpg's the replay value on golden sun isnt great, but its short enough to be ok. an unskippable tutorial and annoyingly long cutscenes dont help.
2/5

total:41/50

so today you get a 2 for one. i recently completed both golden sun 2 and 3, so im going to review those.

Game: Golden Sun 2: the Lost Age
system: nintendo gameboy advance

gameplay: golden sun 2 takes everything that was good about golden sun 1's gameplay and adds to it. there are more djinnia to collect, more sidequests to do, and hidden summons to obtain. it still has obscenely long cutscenes to deal with, but overall it is better. cant give it a perfect 20, but im content to give it a 19.5
score: 19.5/20

storyline: the interesting thing abotu golden sun 2's storyline is that it takes off during the end scene of GS 1 with a separate group of characters, who appeared in the first game, but weren't playable. then, your goal does a heel face turn from the GS 1 goal of preventing something to actively attempting to make it happen. there is of course a good reason for this, 2 very good reasons in fact, and ill nto go into them. you also later run itno your party from GS1, and, if you entered the code from that game, you get them with all of their equipment and djinn and levels, as they were when you beat teh last game. all in all, id say teh stroyline is somewhat improved over GS 1.
score: 8.5/10

characters: im not going to go into detail abotu the characters, they are exactly the same as the characters from the previous game in terms of attitudes and such.
8/10

graphics: see GS 1.
score: 5/5

replay value: again see GS 1. essentially this game is expansive, which is great the first tim ethrough, btu gets tiresome the second time.
score: 2/5

total: 43/50
this one is easily the best of the series.

now on to the next one

Game: Golden Sun 3: Dark Dawn
System: Nintendo DS

Gameplay: Honestly, if youre reading this, then you probably read the other 2. this game improves slightly on the gameplay for the most part, btu difficulty and scope of the game are decreased from GS 2. all in all id say its a net loss back to GS 1 levels, but then you alos lose the ability to go back to previously visited areas. if you missed something then you miss it permanently
score: 17/20

Storyline: this is the main area where this game loses to its predecessors. Whereas the storylines of the previous 2 were solid, and in fact blended together interestingly, this story line is stilted and disjoint. there is no overarching goal that you work toward to pull the various parts together into a coherent goal. additionally the catastrophe that spurs things at teh beginning is ignored through the last 3/4 of the game without having been even remotely resolved.
score: 4/10

characters: the characters in this game are a slight improvement over previous games, but really its mostly more of the same.
8.5/10

graphics: im split on this issue. battle graphics are greatly improved, but the convrsion to 3d rendering for overworld graphics is mediocre at best.
core: 4/5

replay value: I havent tried, but I guarantee that it is the same as the others.
score: 2/5

total: 35.5/50
I may have been somewhat harsh on this game. taken on its own, it is a fun game, but the fact is, it is a sequel, so it must try to compare with its predecessors, and as such, it is found wanting.

Awesome, I almost want a DS now, but if I can get Castlevania for the PSP I'm getting that first.

my original opinion of the ds (and the wii to a certain extent) is that it was kinda gimmicky, and poorly handled. most of the games i was familiar with required use of the stylus, which was a nuisance most times. pokemon handled it well, however, by making the touchscreen work, but optional for regular stuff.

Yeah, getting the new pokemon games is certainly tempting me for a DS.

But I'm still peeved about backwards compatibility for the newer DSes though.

That was why I bought the advance, it could play my old and new game boy games.

yea, i hate losing backwards compatibilty. one reason i liek the wii is that, to a certain extent, it is backwards compatible with every nintendo console thus far (via virtual console ports) if they added gameboy games to the VC i migh just go out and buy a damn wii to play old ass games on.

Actually I like the Wii being backwards compatible with the Gamecube so I didn't miss out missing that system, however everything I think about getting a Wii, I realize that's around $200-$300 and the gamecube is like...$30.

Plus there's not many games for the Wii that has me really wanting one.

Although, putting Chronotrigger for the DS has really put it up a notch in my book.

So today, in honor of pokemon black and white coming out soonish, you get a pokemon review. but not of any of the games as a whole, just one important aspect of them all: the starters. Your starter is your first pokemon, and youll probably rely on it throughout the game. basically, they are important. now im not one to try to break the system, i dont care about teh stats of each pokemon, as far as my starters are concerned i care abotu 2 things: types and looks, and that mainly of the final evolution, so my judging will be mainly out of that.

Red/Blue: these games set the bar high, venusaur is fuckign awesome, and blastoise looks like he would fuck you up. quite frankly, when the least cool of your guys is a fucking dragon, you know youve done something right. 5/5

special note: yellow: fuck pikachu. fuck it to the bowels of fucking hell, it is fantastic in smash bros, but worthless in this game. 0/5

Gold/silver: i said red and blue set the bar high and i meant it, no other game in the series can beat those starters, but gold and silver do ok. none of your starters is great, btu they are all pretty good. 3.5/5

ruby/sapphire: severely underwhelming. the only positive thing i can say here is that swampert's type combo is good, everything else about these is a loser. 1.5/5

diamond/pearl: much improved over its predecessor, the grass and water pokemon here come out pretty good, id rank them in between the g/s and r/b starters. but the fire one is awful, its a flaming monkey. and its subtype, fightign is so worthless. 3.5/5

black/white: and were back down again. complaint 1: fire/fighting? again? 3 in a row? fuck you nintendo. 2 the grass type is just awful. the water one is good, at leats at teh G/S level, and that is the best to be said for them. 2.5/5

Red/blue: Agreed.

Yellow: Against Brock pikachu is useless I agree, but if you catch a mankey let it learn low kick and Brock is a breeze. I didn't really have much trouble having pikachu as a starter plus you get all 3 start pokemon, frankly, I really enjoyed this game as much as red and blue. Maybe a little less since its the same game and not too much new was added.

Gold/Silver: I really liked the Fire and Grass starters but I didn't really care for the water one this time.

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: No comment, haven't really played it.

Diamond/pearl/black/white: (See ruby/emerald/sapphire)
