oh chrono trigger. i dont think i ever actually did get around to beating the boss in the end. and i think i made the mistake of killing magus too :( one thing about it i liked was the combination attack things, where you could do stronger attacks if your party members had complimentary abilities.

I liked that, but there were few parties I could ever find that could use a three character attack. I'm thinking Magus, Luca and the Princess were one of the few, but I honestly can't remember anymore.

Crono, Frog, and Robo had one.

I think that was the most powerful tri-attack. (Magnus, Lucca, and Marle/Princess)

for lack of a better comparison, it's a silent hill knock off. But it takes turns towards the end that are completely unforseen. The story is awesome (it's the only thing that kept me playing for the entire 17 hours it took me to beat it on hard), but the whole thing is marred heavily by some awful mechanics. I suggest watching a let's play of it unless you like to ump when zombies bent over backwards grab you, then you might want to consider a rent. I could do a full fledged review if you're interested.

i skimmed it. ive never been very interested in sonic games. iv eplayed a couple, they arent bad, but, by and large, they never seem to evolve much beyond the old formula of run in a straight line, jumping occasionally.

I had heard that game didn't get good reviews, but I haven't played many Sonic games since Adventure (1).

But I'd at least be willing to check it out.

Well, my review was fair on it. Most Sonic Reviews go, "It's a Sonic game - it tries something different but it is crap."

Yeah, I thought that the reviews were probably slanted but I just haven't gotten the money or time to get them.

Deadly Premonition A survival horror game. (I'm thinking about calling it a survival funny game though)

Story: The central narrative of this game revolves around an FBI agent who travels to a quaint little country town to help solve the strange murder of a local girl in order to add to his expansive mental archive of criminal profiling samples. It is quickly revealed that something of supernatural origins is affecting the town as the main character York Morgan is plagued by strange horrors whenever it rains.

Good points
-The story develops at a very slow pace and characters change gradually and organically.
-The action and the narrative are segmented between sections of frantic zombie killing in a sinister world filled with purple fog and character interaction in the normal visage of the town, so the tone gets broken up before it stagnates.
-There are many unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.
-quirky scenes make the main story line something very unique among games today. From the very mundane to the over the top. (for a sample of what I'm talking about, youtube the "dining room scene from Deadly Premonition"

Bad Points
-The supernatural is never quite explained. I understand that a big part of these "Silent hill-esque" games are drawing your own conclusions, but sometimes this game leaves nothing to draw on. For example: a near universal theory about the overtly sexual nature of the monsters in the second silent hill stem from James' sexual frustrations with his ill wife. By the end of this game, I still couldn't figure out where the most basic enemies came from (from a psychological perspective). The most jarring expression of this is the main character, who seems to have some sort of knowledge about the monsters, saying things like "they're here" and never quite expanding upon that. (Then again, maybe I missed some important side quest information...)
-To expand upon this, the main characters ability to perceive things is never explained either. From the title (and the way some information is presented in game), you'd gather that the is some sort of psychic. However, he simply states he is profiling the criminal, which never quite made sense to me. I even filled in the blanks that were missing from the main story with "he's psychic" and "these things are psychic impressions of blablabla". It made things more cohesive in some senses, but I shouldn't be the one to have to fill in the game's narrative explanations.

Verdict 17/20
-The story itself was good (damn good in some places in fact) but there were just some details lacking.

Characters: This is where the game really shines. There are a lot of interesting characters that receive a healthy dose of development throughout the story.

Good Points
-You become vested in the characters because they're all so distinct from one another.
-(this is not a spolier, it is revealed about 5 minutes into the game, but don't read this line if you don't want to) The main character has an imaginary friend named Zach that he corroborates with during investigations. I personally thought this was awesome.
-As stated before, characters develop heavily. Some go from 2D cutouts with about 3 characteristics to full fledged individuals that have motive and purpose.

Bad Points
-The only thing I could dig out here related to the overblown "stereotypeness" of certain characters. The war veteran (just like every other game/movie war veteran) is a grizzled and paranoid bastard. The rocker always says dude and constantly snaps his fingers to some unintelligible tune in his head (hilariously often in fact).
-Perhaps it was because I played the game with another person in the room and we both have a tendency to laugh at the most minute details, but some things the characters did were hilarious to no end, but this is mostly due to design flaws.

Verdict 18/20
-The game almost plays like a movie (you'll be lost if you miss a cut scene) and is very character driven, so it gives a player interesting characters to interact with.

Gameplay: All my experiences with the game were on the hard difficulty setting, which informs my opinions here. I thought hard would make it scarier, but it over exposed you to some enemies with an asinine amount of health to make up for the bad AI. Here I'll list out some features that need addressing. I judged heavily because the gameplay is what draws you into the atmosphere of a horror game.

Hunger Hygiene, shaving, and Sleep
-these bars offer a sort of passive realism to the world, but can be rendered wholly unnecessary depending upon how fast you do a mission. If you enter the nightmare section of the world and complete a part of the investigation, more often than not you get to rest at the hotel and awake with full energy and hunger bars. and even if you don't, just blow some of your ridiculous amount of cash on some ridiculously mis-priced food items (it's hilarious and actually made me laugh several times when i went to a venting machine and crammed in $24.50 for five goddamn lollipops). The "realism" feel is also broken when you see your character can survive for two and a half days on 7 lollipops (only just then starting to feel hungry).
-The hygiene and shaving are more aesthetic. Shaving is solely preferential. Hygiene, oddly enough, is maintained solely through dry cleaning. I even went into my hotel room shower to see if I could and Morgan says something along the lines of "Look Zach, we can shower here and clear our thoughts". But, there is no option to do so. Instead, you clean your clothes for a paltry sum and wear different suits. this brings me to another point...

Money is useless (in some senses)
-money is supposed to be a cap on someone's ability to acquire resources. in Deadly Premonition, there are so many monetary rewards given, that they might as well make everything free because after a few hours of gameplay, money becomes a nonissue in respect to ammo, only limiting when you can acquire certain high powered weapons.
-First, there are strange instances where you are paid in completely illogical ways. For example, you prefer one suit and decide to have it dry cleaned, wearing another suit for a while. You'll pay 4 dollars to clean this suit and as soon as you leave the suitcase menu a medal will appear saying you've earned 20-40 dollars for a "trendy suit" bonus. The fuck?
Other strange instances make you laugh your ass off, like getting paid 30 dollars to shave, to drive long distances, to pick up completely atmosphere breaking "honors medals" which are arcadey floating, rotating medals that give you 5 or 30 dollars. It's funny as hell.
-Also, if you're smart, you'll use your infinite ammo starter gun to take care of most kills (and by most kills, i mean all kills where there are only 1-2 zombies trying to kill you). making the ammo issue evaporate entirely in some cases.

The Inventory system
-At first this thing didn't make any sense, and then it managed to make less sense as the game went along. First you hold an arbitrary number of items, which is fine. I can understand expecting the player to manage resources and equipment, but they way this is expressed is completely artificial. First, each item you have has a maximum capacity. No matter what, you can never hold more than one "high quality beef" or twenty "lollipops", even in your tool box. For some unknown reason, you can never have more than 720 machine gun bullets on your person at any time, even in your tool box (that makes a total of 1440). The limit is rendered even more arbitrary by the gun shop (which is magically accessed through your tool box). So, every time you access the tool box, you can just buy more ammo anyway.
-The arbitrary item limit becomes INFURIATING when you are trying to collect a dropped item anywhere near an infinite monster spawn. If you try to pick up an item and are at the arbitrary max for that item (say 4 medium medkits), you are stuck in that spot, reading the damn text telling you that you don't have room in your inventory which is completely inexcusable because the world doesn't pause. Then, you have the option to magically teleport the item to your tool box. which is apparently an interdimensional portal that can be accessed through any other toolbox in the game (which are conveniently located in save rooms). Hell, even the tool box in the gun shop acts as your storage container.

Combat
-It takes forever on hard. I found myself running past encounters simply because I didn't want to stand there and peck away at the damn zombie with my infinite pistol. Near the end-game, it took around a clip and a half to take out lone zombies (that's around 20 bullets, 90% of them headshots). The AI is so random that in some instances I found myself mercilessly destroying some poor bastard who was bent over backwards, looking around all confused as I pounded round after round into his skull. In other cases, the zombies remembered that they could teleport and I would be swarmed before I could wrest Morgan's unwieldy gun around to someone directly in front of me (imagine Resident Evil 4 controls dropped in an ice skating ring). Trying to get a precise shot on one of those can be hell unless they do that thing where they teleport in a straight line.
-melee weapons are wholly useless as anything other than an implement to break down a barricade (which they are made even more redundant once the shotgun/machine gun are made available). The only advantage they have over guns is that you can move while using them, but their durability is so pitiful that you'll only be able to swing through 3 zombies at the absolute best before your melee weapon is discarded, which is a lengthy animation that cannot be skipped while the zombies surround your dumb ass.
-The bottom quarter of the health bar may as well not even exist. If you don't have any healing items (which can only be found in the nightmare world, mostly on the corpses of some random enemies), you hobble around at about a tenth of your normal speed and when you aim your gun, the reticle swings wildly around where you're trying to aim. I never had to deal with this in the main game except for a boss fight. In that case, my only option was to die and try again. I have no reason to believe otherwise in the main game.
-also, the game is riddled with quick time events. from your standard "wiggle the stick to escape the grab" to "press these four button to dodge the boss attack". They're kind of silly. I would rather have an actual dodge maneuver instead of having my character dive into the wall and be immune to the attack the clearly hit him anyway due to pressing B at the right time. There is a unique boss monster encounter where your have to use the quick time mechanic to escape, such as wiggling the left stick to run and pressing A to climb up, etc, etc, etc. However, it seems pretty ignorant when the boss is clearly waiting for your slow ass to get to a certain point so he can trigger his next event. All in all, quick time events suck in my opinion and this game hasn't changed my mind.
-some fights are blatant resource sinks. an enemy introduced about halfway through takes 11-13 shotgun shells to shoot and doesn't do anything different throughout the damn fight except the same routine. When you best the first one, you have the skills to take the rest without losing health and it gets old, very old. Especially, when the fight is unskippable through your normal "run and avoid" means.
-one aist side-thought: hearing the same copy pasted zombie distortedly shout "Kiiiill meeeee!" and shortly after it's demise say "I don't want to diiiiiiiieeeee" gets old after the 300th-and-some-odd time. (the game keeps track of your kills.)

Driving
-Driving is padding, plain and simple. the town is a huge, to-scale monstrosity withe about 10 places of interest to you and you have to drive to each and every one of them. Most missions have a Dead Rising style timer so all the exploration you might want to do is hampered by this (except is certain extended missions). But, i never found myself all that interested by the town because navigation sucks so god damn hard. There is no minimap for the town and the maximum you can zoom out in the map screen is the equivalent of holding an actual map about 4 inches from your face, so you might as well not even bother trying to find your way anywhere except the big red arrow to your next mission. The only incentive to do so is to meet some interesting characters (and for me i tried to upgrade my gun at the gun shop, but all that bastard wanted to do was talk about trading cards. Oh yea, you can find trading cards in game, i only found four because i didn't care).

Verdict 8/20
-Bad controls for survival horror games went out of style. It's ignorant to think that it somehow makes the game scarier to frustrate players with shit controls (if that was the intention) especially when combat is a large part of the game. As a side note, i subtracted 2 points for a fishing minigame i was forced to play to further the story. a fishing. mini. game. Based on random luck and quick time events. It took 25 minutes with my friend laughing at me every time i failed.

Quality
-while the story and characters are will thought out (despite some bumps in the road) the game itself looks like ass. At some points, it actually serves to enhance the comedic vibe i got form the game. But, for the most parts, the character motions are so animatronic in cut scenes (where 104% of the story is told) that you can almost see the gears and strings on their mannequin bodies (hell, every woman in the game must have genetic code to grab their left arm with the right at some point in conversation with another human being). and every time I see one of their rubbery smiles, i hear a high pitched *ding*. The world itself is a nightmare of plain and sickening textures wrapped in invisible walls and indestructible obstacles, kind of like an early racing game. To me a game is more that the texture put into it, but I swear, this could have been a last generation title.
-the nightmare world looks nice though... if you compare it to silent hill 2 it looks to be in about the same ball park. (i don't know why they used such old textures)

Verdict 10/20
-Like i said before, a game doesn't need to ride on the most awesome graphics at the expense of story, but this game really did lapse in this department. The quality points come from the crafting of the characters and an interesting story line.

Replay Value
-once everything's been spoiled for you, I can't imagine the main story being worth sitting through many of the lengthy cut scenes again. However, there's plenty of character to seek out and talk to for side quest related material, a fishing minigame and a racing minigame (if you're into that stuff), and a bone collecting side quest that i never finished. But other than the few tangential NPC's, the town is largely hollow. After you forget about about it for a while, it might be worth it for you to go back and re experience the weirdness.

Verdict 10/20

Price Modifier + 2
-at 15 dollars, it wasn't to bad of a sting. And I traded in 2 games i'd never play again an and paid 5 dollars for it, which probably made the sting seem even less.

Total Score: 65/100
-The story is the only thing to come to this game for, unless you're a die hard survival horror aficionado or like to experience what scariness there is first hand, you could probably get by watching a let's play of this game on youtube (there's only one according to my half assed search).
