Resident Evil 5 Systems: playstation 3 or xbox 360 I hope that this is a fair review, I've played both the PS3 and 360 versions and the 360 version is the one I own. GamePlay: There's a lot to say here so let's try to start...The controls themselves are much like a 3rd person shooter, except that to aim, you have to hold a trigger/button and manually aim, during that you can't move. Some people may have a problem with this, but the game usually handles it fairly, you can switch guns with the d-pad so you don't have to pull up the menu (which doesn't pause the game this time) and select a gun, so switching on the fly if one gun is out of bullets isn't a problem usually. There's a way to 180 quickly, and etc. so they tried to make it work well. But this is resident evil, so if you're a fan you're probably used to somewhat stiff control, it's hard to describe, but it didn't seem that big of a problem, and usually the deaths don't come from the controls. This game is basically, you go through a level, get stuff, solve a puzzle or two, fight "zombies" maybe a boss or maybe a quick reaction cut-scene (push a button that appears on the screen or your dead. It also does that in game, a zombie may use a powerful attack but you may be able to dodge it or punch a stunned zombie by pushing the button.) until the end of the game. Afterwards, you can use the money you got or sell some stuff you got, to upgrade your weapons. This game is really meant for two players, so if you have a friend over for the weekend or someone who owns the game as a friend online this game's fun increases tenfold. Without friends its like playing Left 4 Dead alone with AI, it may be fun for awhile but it'll lose its fun quickly. 18/20 storyline: The story is, you play as Chris Redfield (if you're not a Resident Evil fan or never played any of the original PS1 games this name means nothing to you), who goes to Africa to find a terrorist selling some of the Umbrella corporation's bio-weapons. You meet up with your new partner Sheva, get your weapons and things...take an interesting turn to say without spoiling anything. Also (you may have to unlock this) there's a files section that'll help you catch up on the story so far if you're completely lost. So it tries to extend to non-resident evil fans/players with this. But the story itself... Is ok, it's nothing extra special, but a good action movie plot. 9/10 characters: If you've played Resident Evil then you'll be happy to see the familiar face of Chris Redfield (probably), plus a couple of...other familiar faces to say without spoiling anything. The new and old characters are good, good voice acting but a couple of the villains, I don't know if it's bad/over the top acting or just my playing the game so much I find things funny. 2 of the villains' voices and speeches are hilarious, maybe its corny, but their antics amused me. One villain had a kind of annoying voice but maybe that's what made him funny to me (if Brooklyn accents annoy you). But I really can't find much fault with them. 10/10 graphics: They're good for 360/PS3 standards, they do what they need to and nothing seems wrong with them. 5/5 replay: This game is basically, walk around, shoot zombies (if you can call them that anymore), solve a slight puzzle or two, defeat a boss a certain way perhaps. Rinse, repeat until end of campaign. Now that may sound boring, but it's actually quite fun, especially if you have different weapons to do it. Some have weaknesses, and others can transform into different...things if you think you've killed them. The fun part is after you've beaten the game, you keep all your upgraded weapons. Also you earn points at the end of a mission that can be used for special features, like alternate costumes, unlimited ammo for guns, figurines of characters, etc. The guns can only have unlimited ammo if you upgraded them fully first and some costumes are only attainable after beating the game. Throughout the game is BSAA emblems, if you shoot them they help unlock certain things as well. Some you may have to get an upgraded weapon or playthrough a level again to get them. So there's plenty to do. There's also a mercenaries mode where you (and a friend if you wish) pick a character (even some villains) and last as long as you can against zombies until the clock runs out. But your main objective is to get a high score by killing the zombies quickly and in order to keep a combo. There's ammo and health around so you don't have to worry too much about conserving. After you've played all this though the game kind of loses its touch but it's got plenty of things to keep you returning. 4/5 Also there's a downloadable content called "Lost in Nightmares", it isn't very long, but it basically gives you a slimmed down version of the mansion from Resident Evil 1, the details are brilliant and if you're a fan of the series this add-on is worth the $5 it costs. There's also an easter egg to play the level with the camera angles of the original resident evil, now that's clever. total: 46/50 from DangerousNate If you have a friend over for the weekend or someone who owns the game who plays online and are looking for a game to play together, this game is definitely a must-reccomend. If you aren't a fan of resident evil, don't have any friends to play it with, and are looking for the next scariest game, then I'd say you should probably pass it by. |

I'd like to chip in on this as well with some points i didn't see -the quick time event cut scenes can be ass with standard internet latency. Cat and I used to play this game a lot and would always have to sit though the same GODDAMNED cut scene because in multiplayer, there are some cut scenes that require both players to press the buttons at the exact same time. Also, some boss fights are riddled with the damn things. Hell, the whole game is build around QTE's to some extent. (I thoroughly hate QTE's) -The whole thing feels very arcadey. Nate may not have had too much problem with controls, but I certainly found them very restrictive. you even have to hold the button and stand stock still, planting your feet into the earth to use your melee weapon. It really clashes a lot when your character can dexterously dodge with the flick of one button but has to become a frikin turret to fire a few rounds or knife someone. It's like the character's brain can only control the legs or the hands at one time, but not both. the only way you can shoot like an intelligent person is to use the cover based combat mechanic. However, in certain missions that require you to move to avoid instadeath enemies, you're stuck with the stand-and-fire way of dealing with things. -on a personal note, the thing that killed the game for me was a showcasing of how the game design screwed with itself. There was one part where, in order to get to the next session, you had to walk through a narrow area with bombs on one side that had laser sensors shooting onto the other side. The bombs were literally NECK HIGH. Neck high as in, if there was a crouch button, I'd be able to walk beneath the bombs and not have to waste ammo destroying them. The hilarious part was that shorter enemies from the next area were walking beneath the laser line to attack me. It was at that point I called bullshit in the game and decided I would forever dislike it. -also, the impact of the story line means absolutely NOTHING to those who haven;t played RE1 (which I had not when I played). So names are getting tossed around and cameos are happening like you should give a fuck, but you don't. If I had to give it a revised score, it would be about 30/50 (but that's just me, and I'm an ass when it comes to games) at a 60$ price (I.E when it came out). I'd probably bump it up to 40 if onfronted with a 20$ copy. I generally like shooters, but this one was a little to on the arcadey side for me. nothing was fluid like you would expect from a shooter. sorry to muscle in on ya nate, but i felt that you gave it a score it didn't deserve

welp, no votes, not surprised, so you all get tactics advanced final fantasy Tactics Advanced system: game boy advance Gameplay: the gameplay is excellent, the characters they force you to have are worthwhile and you have about 22 more slots for others. additionally there are secret characters, some of whom start out with great abilities, some from the storyline, some with unique abilities, and some with a combination. the job system is well done, allowing you to pretty much multiclass your characters between up to 4 classes if you want, with some abilities working very well with other classes to allow you to make really great charaters(I have an assassin that has a minimum 70% chance to hit with an instant kill attack, 95% from the back). in addition the mix of ranged, melee, and magic classes is pretty good. gameplay is very good, i give it 20/20 storyline: ill be honest, the storyline blows, especially the very beginning. it gets better for a bit, and can be in some ways engaging, but i never once agreed with what the main character was trying to do, i just went along with it because i had to. your main goal aside, it is alright. 5/10 characters: as i mentioned, i never agreed with the main character, but most othr characters arent bad. even the moogle youre forced to hang around with is tolerable, which is saying a lot for a moogle. i gove the characters a 8/10 graphics: considering that the system the game is on is the gamboy advance, which is roughly equivalent to a handheld snes, the graphics are pretty good. not much else to say 5/5 replay value: due to the immense customizability of your party, this game has a slightly higher replay value than most final fantasy games. but the storyline still feels stale on subsequent plays. 4/5 total: 42/50 or a middling B |

-Yeah, I usually played the QTEs with my cousin in the same room and we shared the same tv, so that didn't really seem a problem, also you can skip up to the QTEs so that you don't have to see the same thing before each QTE. -Fair enough, I kind of like the arcadey feel, but usually if you couldn't shoot at the enemy you run until you could find a good place to shoot, or beg your co-op friend to help you. Sometimes it just came down to learning how to avoid certain enemies or their death-traps by trying over and over. -Those bombs are fairly easy to deal with, just shoot them from afar, if those are the ones I'm thinking of and yes, they are annoying, but easily dealt with. But then again, starting out with little ammo, you are hesitant to use it to get rid of them. -Like I said, you can read up on the story in the files section, but A ) who does that? and B ) it probably still wouldn't have the same impact if you haven't played any RE games before (especially the first). So fair enough on the story. And I wasn't basing the score on the $60 game, I got it for $25. I'd agree it probably wouldn't be worth $60 (few games are these days), but for the $30 or $40 (with the add-ons), it's worth it. |

i personally thought the ending was pitiful (and the main quest felt like nothing but another side quest). Every npc felt like a cardboard cut out of the last one (not to mention the generally wonky emotion/reaction system in fable). the crucible was boring after two and a half times. multiplayer was a pain due to the invisible umbilical cord and shared camera between the players. I hated how your character started to look like an ogre if you bought too many strength upgrades. the replay value was also hampered by the patience testing portions of the game where you're forced to follow some slow ass npc or listen to an unskippable conversation. *cannot believe you played it 7 times, but to each his own i suppose*

I'll cave in and review a game none of you were going to buy anyway! Sonic Unleashed on the PS3 I'll change the established order of categories and start off reviewing Storyline Basically, Dr. Eggman/Robotnik is trying to conquer the world again. Sonic has pursued him to his airfleet, and during their fight uses the 7 chaos emeralds to become Super Sonic. The Doctor then tricks Sonic and uses a machine which drains the power from him and the emeralds, and fires a beam into the planet which causes it to shatter into 7 pieces. This releashes a monster of some sort, but it dissolves almost instantly. Sonic has now turned into a Werehog (for as yet, unexplained reason) and the Doctor jettisons him and the now useless Choas emeralds out. In his Werehog form, Sonic survives the fall, but has landed a strange small creature he names Chip. Chip appears to be suffering from amnesia and Sonic Resolves to help him rediscover his memory. Sonic also discovers that he only becomes the Werehog at night, and in the day returns to normal. Sonic must find a way to restore himself, the planet and the chaos emeralds and stop Dr. Eggman's/Robotnik's lastest plan. I won't reveal anymore as that would be a spoil it. However, I will say I enjoyed the storyline. It has its occasionial flaw, but nevermind. There are a few funny moments in it and I did always want to find out 'what happens next?' even though it was fairly predictable in places. Talking about predictable, when will Sega come up with a plot ending that DOESN'T involve the Doctor's latest monster rebelling against him? Score = 7/10 Characters No serious complaints here. The main Characters in this one (Sonic, Tails, Doctor Eggman/Robotnik and Amy) are played the same as they always are - although Amy and Tails (especially) are marginalised far too much by Chip. Chip and Professor Pickle are OK, as plot devices go (although Chip does begin to annoy you by the end of the game). The only real issue are the general townspeople... WHO DON'T SEEM TO CARE THAT SONIC IS A WEREHOG!!!!!!! I mean, seriously?! Tails and Amy make more of a deal about it than they do. "Who are you? Sonic? You don't look like him, but my Grandson is lost, please save him!" Honestly! Most of the Day enemies are basic, but you mostly ignore them or charge straight through them. The variety of night enemies keeps it interesting, but they are still easy the beat. The bosses usually require some patience and practice to beat, but aren't too difficult. Score = 8/10 Gameplay This is almost literally, a game of two halfs. The day levels are fricking awesome! Thank you Sega for making Sonic run super duper fast :D. In the day levels, Sonic has a 'ring energy' bar, which you can use to perform a charging dash - which you can use to charge straight through enemies and go really, really fast - even across water! Also, rings are attracted to you whilst you charge, so you don't need to stop to pick them up! Nice! There's a few other moves you have to use like the homing attack (which doesn't randomly kill you any more), and a few other new ones that allow you get past certain obstacles - but they don't really detract from the speed. During the levels, there are usually a few QFTs to overcome (Either on ramp launches or jump pads) which if you fail either lead to you having to take a harder route, hurting you or leads to your death. These aren't overplayed, so it is fine. The Day bosses follow the now established 'Chase' battle. But it is much harder than the ones on Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog. A worthy challenge. One new addition is gladly welcomed - YOU DON'T LOSE ALL YOUR RINGS WHEN HURT! Certain things cause you to lose more rings than others, but if you have loads spare, you won't lose all of 'em. A nice touch Now, sadly I come to the night stages. As these go, they are ok. They rely much more on a problem solving and platforming than the day staging, and a 'beat 'em' style of fighting the enemies. There is a relatively complex 'combo' list you can use and unlock by levelling up certain areas, but I mostly just kept hitting the same button - it worked. However, this made the combat feel very... samey. The platforming relies on you jumping and then using your new 'Stretching arms' to reach up and grab various edges or poles - however you could only grab certain ledges and poles. This led to some very frustrating and cheap deaths. The main problem for the night stages are that they always come after a fast paced day stage. After running around very fast, you have to plod along fighting tough enemies and solving puzzles. This doesn't reflect well on the night levels. Also, they take at least 3 times as long as the Day levels - also not good. I do like the ring charged life bar for the werehog - a good concept in my opinion. The Night bosses are ok - although slightly easier due to the fact it is more arena combat sort of fight. I do feel the night bosses rely too much on QFTs for 'finishing' them off, which made it all feel a tad... artificial. There are many option side missions townspeople can set, you can also 'cleanse' people of Dark Gaia at night after a certain point in the game. The worst bit for me was the fucking 'Day and night' medals which were strune across each level and stage. You needed to collect a certain amount of these medals before you could attempt the next stage - annoying enough. The worst bit is however the fact MOST OF THEM ARE IN THE NIGHT LEVELS... WHICH TAKE AGES! I have no issues with collectables to unlock cool stuff, but when it so... enforced, I hate it. I just wanted to run fast ![]() The final boss fight is ok, on balance. It is a mixture of evasion, QFTs and having to get through a smallish area avoiding obstacles quickly. Then it is on the main Super Sonic battle. It starts off free flying and cool! Before it desends into far too many QFTs - including the most ridiculous one ever - HIT L1 60 TIMES IN 40 SECS! <_< Again, it made the final boss feel too artifical for my liking. I also don't like how you can't just watch the old cutscenes you've already seen once you complete the game. You have to collect them... MOSTLY FROM THE NIGHT STAGES! ARHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. In summary, the gameplay has some awesome bits, some good bits, some passable bits and some awful bits - hmmm. Score = 14/20 Graphics The day stages and places look very good - almost as though they were done by pixar or something. However, as they are mostly blurred to death at superspeeds, you really won't be looking at them - a shame as some real effort has gone into them. The Night stages are as well drawn, and suitably dark for er... night. Helpfully, most of the enemies glow so they can be seen easily The Day music is perfect - it always suits the level and part of the world you're in. Excellent. The Night Music... hmm. It is nothing to write home about, but mostly you won't actually hear the night music as it always drowned out by the Fight music which occurs whenever enemies are nearby. Now, considering enemies appear pretty much everywhere, you're mostly listening to this - so why does it sound like it comes from some sort of detective mystery film? Why? Score = 4/5 Replay Value Hmm... The side missions, and the fact you can level select removes any need to replay the game. Also, I'm not sure many would WANT to redo all the night levels, so this is probably for the best really. The only reason would be to watch a cutscene you haven't been able to collect. Score = 2/5 Final Score - 35/50 (C-) Rating - Fun City This game has many flaws, but if you are willing to dig deep into it, there is a good game underneath. If you're a Sonic fan - I'd buy it, especially if you can find it cheap/second hand. If you aren't a Sonic fan, this one is probably a miss for you. You'll enjoy the day levels, but I doubt you'll have the motivation to get through the Night levels. |

Chrono Trigger system: SNES, PS or DS. All are pretty much the same. Gameplay: The gameplay is great if you like the traditional SNES JRPGs. The system is easy and in the tradition that everyone expects. The various characters each have an individual magic style thus making you think out your party rather than simply saying “I like these ones!” While not overly difficult, it does requite some backtracking to do side-quests if you’re going to level up enough to beat the boss… which is a suitably epic battle. 20/20 Storyline: The story line has become such a classic that several JRPGs have imitated aspects of it. You play as Chrono, the silent protagonist, who runs into a princess at a town fair. Together you accidentally go back in time. shenanigans ensue. While the story is somewhat bland in terms of basic plot (with the only real difference from most JRPGs being the time travel aspect) it makes up for it in terms of characters. 8/10 Characters: God damn. This game has the single best cast of any RPG I’ve ever played. While a few characters are somewhat annoying (SHUT THE FUCK UP PRINCESS!) it makes up entirely in the characters of Glenn (AKA Frog) and Magus. Glenn is a character you meet fairly early on, a knight who has been turned into a frog. Glenn was apparently something of a coward in his younger days, he lived in the shadow of his brother who was a complete badass, and because of an event that I won’t ruin here, he was turned into a frog by Magus. Glenn is without a doubt on my top 10 video game characters list. The guy has an amazingly well written backstory, his quest lines are fun, and if you keep him in your party you get the awesome (and slightly ending altering) choice on if you will have Magus join your party later on or have a one on one duel. While I always advise everyone to take Magus (seriously, don’t kill him), the duel is one of the most suitably epic feeling moments I’ve ever played in a video game. It feels like your finally redeeming Glenn for all the crap he’s been through and making a difference. Seriously, listen to his damn theme song and tell me it doesn’t sound like he’s about to kick some ass. Then there was Magus. When his when his theme song started, you knew you were fucked. The game increased this certainty with having his sprite tighten his gloves on his hand, which should not look as menacing as it does, but it gave you the certain impression that he was about to rip out your fucking spine. Magus starts off your fairly traditional villain (OH NOES! AN EVIL SORCERER WHO IS WAGING WAR FOR NO REASON! HE WILL KILLZOR US ALL!) but you quickly find out that you are mistaken. Magus has his reasons, and simply feels that the ends justifies the means. It’s hard to argue with him too much when you find out what he’s fighting and what it will do, but that’s what makes Magus so damn cool. He’s a villainous protagonist who will join you, but there’s none of those pesky “Doing it to redeem himself” side-quests. He’s just simply joining you because it’s the only way to reach his end. 10/10 Graphics: Not much to say about the graphics. It was badass when the SNES first came out, and the PS and DS version have some pretty cool anime cut scenes added in. 5/5 Replay: A whole hell of a lot here. First off, it was one of the first games to impliment an New Game + system, where your could restart the game with the same character level and items. It has something like 15 endings which change based around what time point in the game you fight the final boss (you can technically fight him before you even have a party of two) and some miscellaneous decisions change minor aspects of the ending. (There are endings where Glenn is no longer a frog for example.) 5/5 total: 48/50 This game is simply put, a must play for any JRPG. I figure most have already played it, but if not I highly suggest picking up any edition of it. |

oh chrono trigger. i dont think i ever actually did get around to beating the boss in the end. and i think i made the mistake of killing magus too one thing about it i liked was the combination attack things, where you could do stronger attacks if your party members had complimentary abilities.
