I've recently read a few wikipedia articles for video games, and included among the information was ratings from various sources. i figure "hey, we like video games, we play video games, that makes us competent to rate video games" hence this thread i propose that we rate video games. not every single one, but any game you think deserves to be rated (both positively or negatively). for instance, i highly doubt any of us feel the need to rate the Madden games, but Zelda or Final Fantasy or something migth be worht a go. that said, i plan to start us off with a couple final fantasy games, but first my system (feel free to use your own if youd like) Im judging 5 categories: Gameplay: i consider this to be by far the most important aspect, it covers a variety of things including controls, enemies and bosses, difficulty, and things like extras and sidequests. it is worth 20 points storyline: fairly self explanatory, it covers the central story and things like dialog. it is worth 10 points characters: related to story line, this covers all the characters, mostly in terms of how annoying they are, how good/bad of an enemy your enemy is, these kind of things. also worth 10 points graphics: this will rate teh raphics and, to the extent that i care, sound. this will usually be judged relatuvely, so an snes game migth rate higher than a ps2 game because the ps2 game has awful graphics compared to other ps2 games, while the snes has good graphics compared to snes games. this category can severely enhance or detract from the experience, but it is not nearly as crucial as the others. worth 5 points replay value: this rates how good or bad a game seems on sunsequent playthroughs. things like unskippable tutorials will hurt this severly. worth 5 points total value:sum of other areas. out of a possible 50 Final Fantasy IX system: playstation this is the first FF game i ever played, and one of the first games i had for the playstation, so i might be biased in its favor. GamePlay: gameplay is good. controls are easy, enemies are, generally, to scale with where you are expected to be, and all in all there are very few detractors. there are plenty of sidequests to complete, and 4 extra bosses to fight. one issue is the absurd number of random encounters, these do get tedious after some time. additionally, the trance system is entirely too unpredictable, and unlike similar systems in other games in the series, you cannot save a fully charged bar from one figth to the next, once its full its use or lose. on a whole i give gameplay 18/20 storyline: the storyline for this game is interesting. you start off trying to do one thing, only to have your goal escalate from save the girl, to save the country, to stop the war, to finally, save all of existence. the worst issue with the storyline is at teh end, when you figth a final boss who appears out of nowhere with no references ever made to his existence until this point. i gove storyline 9/10 characters: this game has a host of great characters, all of whom seem to develop as the story progresses. most of your main characters must come up against some crisis at some point, steiner has a crisis of loyalty, vivi has to face his own mortality, and dagger lies helpless while her mother almost kills her, then uses the power stolen from her to lay waste to 2 cities. the main detractor from the whole thing is the main enemy, who is rather underwhelming, and extremely flamboyant. overall characters gets 9/10 graphics: not much to say here, great graphics for a ps1 game, the slightly cartoony look complements the game's style excellently. 5/5 replay: the issue with a game with a strong storyline is that replaying it, you already know all the surprises, and it gets boring. this game is still fun to play again, and it would be hard to improve in this category, but thats just teh way of things. replay gets a 3/5 total: 45/50 or a 90% rating from dunkum |

any game is applicable. though id ask that you not review games in genres you dont like. i will not be reviewing the likes of halo because i hate first person shooters, for instance. now on to my next one: FFXII system: PS2 Gameplay: The gameplay is great, although the license board takes a little getting used to. the gambit system makes fights much less of a pain, allowing you to set up what your party will do, then leave them to do it until you see the need to step in. this means that much of the fighting will turn into watching, but compared to the tedium some fights in rpgs can become, this is nice. additionally, on some of the more absurd bosses, directly controling every action for hours (in no way an exaggeration) would get old fast. this way you only act when you need to, and let the gambits, which you set up in the first place, act for you the rest of the time. i do have a small gripe about the summon system, the summons could stand to be buffed up some, they are rarelty worth the excessive cost to bring them ou, but this is fairly minor in the long runt. that said, there are plenty of non-storyline things to do, and even some retardedly hard bosses (50 million fuckign hp on one of them) for the truly courageous/bonkers. 20/20 storyline: the story line is pretty damn goo with only one minor plothole, specifically why do the rest of your characters keep the 2 youngest around?? that aside, this is a divergence from your standard FF plot where you try to save the world to one where you are just trying to free your country (city state?), which is nice, although, of course yu decide at some poitn to defy the gods, btu thats a different issue entirely. overall storyline is solid. 10/10 characters: in your party there is approximately 1 good character, and another who is pretty alright. all the rest are kinda annoying. this is made up for largely by 2 factors: cid and reddas. cid is a major enemy throughout the game, he wishes to wrest the determination of history from the gods and put it into mankind's hands. this a naoble goal, btu hes also batshit crazy (also batshit awesome) cid is easily the best character in the game, and its almost a pity that youre against him (though hed make a terrible good guy). reddas on the other hand is on your side. he joins the party as an extra for a while near the end of the game, and makes your enemies give up with the awesome power of his sideburns. in fact, this game's supporting cast is much stronger than its main cast, and the only reason it doesnt get a terrible character score 7/10 graphics: there is not much to say about the graphics. they are great, just plain great, and the voice work is also excellent. full marks 5/5 replay: because of the vast ability to explore while playing, this game has some added replay value, but its still an rpg with a linear storyline, the second time through will never be as interesting as teh first. 3/5 total: 45/50 same grade i gave 9, and that isnt a coincidence, these are both very strong contenders |

perhaps, but i tend to think not. graphics are really nto all that important, ff7 for instance, which i plan to revew, has terrible character graphics and FF9's graphic are some what cartoony, btu both are better games, to me, than FF 8 which has better graphics than both |

Replay value may be a bit more of a factor though. But if it's a RPG replay value isn't as important to me, as long as I can beat the game once it's fine, but if it's a short game, it'd better keep me coming back to it, especially if I paid a lot of money for it. |

replay value may be underscored here, btu not for rpg's i think. if i were to review the original mario, i may have to redo the scale to account for the fact that its replay value helps it enormously |

Replay isn't an issue for RPG's, as they take a good 30-50 hours to finish on average anyway. But for other things it is; for example I've played Empire Total war for more than 200 hours. I've played COD for days. As for graphics; while great graphics aren't always the essential component, they deserve a ten along with everything else aside from gameplay, which is the most important factor. A score on graphics reflects many things; I'd give minecraft an eight probably, as while not ultra-realistic, they have their own charm. There's a difference between sucky graphics, and a game with intentionally different looking graphics. |

you may have a point, and like ive said, it probably should vary by genre. i do agree with the point about intentionally different graphics, like ive mentioned FF9's graphics, while not especially realistic, fit the game much better than realistic ones would. that said, i still think graphics dont rate a 10. quite frankly, in most cases the variation in graphics between games on the same hardware are mostly insignificant. exceptions occur, to my knowledge, mostly in the 64 bit era, n 64, ps1, dreamcast, where you get things like ff7 to compare with 8 and 9. in older games all graphics are more or less equally shitty, and in newer games all graphics are equally amazing (the worst and best on ps3 are probably both stunning for instance) |
